TikTok is obsessed with this intense abdominal weight loss dance but experts say it’s not effective – Insider

There's an intense abdominal exercise suddenly appearing on people's TikTok For You pages. The idea is to jerk your chest and hips forwards and then backwards very quickly, while twisting, culminating in a sort of dance which aims to target the ab muscles and promises to reduce belly fat and form a slimmer waist.

The move has been posted in hundreds of videos by one user, known only as Janny14906, whose posts rack up hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, of views. Janny captions almost every one of their videos with the message: "As long as you enjoy the skinny come together."

Janny seems to be the trainer who popularized the move, having created the account in March. Dozens of comments on each of their videos suggest doing it for just five minutes every day has helped them lose weight . Janny has also responded to comments from viewers, saying "each movement requires five minutes of exercise," and people should "see results after a month."

While encouraging more movement is generally a good thing, Janny's rise to TikTok fame may highlight some problems with how the platform operates, given it allows fad weight loss tactics to become so popular. Experts weighed in on whether such a movement would have the desired results, and the impact weight loss TikToks may have on users' mental health.

Insider has reached out to Janny in TikTok comments, but there is no other contact information on their page and there are no social media accounts linked to it. Janny has not yet responded to the request.

TikTok did not respond to a request for comment. The TikTok terms of service reference content that constitutes "self-harm" or "is intended to harass, harm, hurt, scare, distress, embarrass or upset people," but no mention is made of content relating to weight loss or dieting.

Janny claims in their videos that the exercise will "reduce the abdomen," but it's a myth that you can target fat loss from a specific body part, personal trainer Sohee Lee told Insider. Much like endless clam-shells won't slim your thighs and arm pulses won't reduce your bingo wings, ab-specific exercises won't give you a flat stomach.

In order to lose fat from your middle, experts agree you need to be in a calorie deficit which will result in fat loss from all over your body.

"This person is promoting this exercise as what do if you want to get skinny, she also has other posts where she says multiple times, 'Exercise for an hour a day and eat whatever you want,' which of course is completely incorrect and this kind of advice is exactly what gets people into a lot of trouble where they go for a run then eat their faces off and end up gaining a bunch of weight," Lee said.

As Insider's Gabby Landsverk reported, a study recently found that diet is more important than exercise in maintaining a healthy body weight, and Lee agrees it's the biggest component in fat loss.

"No matter how much exercise you're doing, if your nutrition is not dialled in, if you're not eating in a calorie deficit, you're not going to shed the body fat," she said. "Exercise should come secondary to that."

For many people, the stomach is a stubborn area and often one of the last parts of the body to shed fat when losing weight, but diet is really the only way to do it, nutritionist Graeme Tomlinson previously told Insider.

If you want ab definition, training the abdominals is important the abs are muscles just like any other and can be grown. However, until you shed the layer of fat over them, your abs won't be visible.

While Lee encourages enjoyable, pain-free movement, she says this is far from the most effective means of shaping your body and what you should be focusing on primarily if this is your goal is strength-training followed by cardio.

"Even if your goal is fat loss, you should absolutely be strength-training," Lee said. "The purpose of strength-training while dieting is to maintain, or sometimes even gain, muscle mass, while you are shedding body fat, so you're not losing muscle along with the fat."

To strengthen your core using bodyweight exercises, Lee says a more effective use of your time would be to perform movements like hollow body holds, crunches, or side planks, because they engage a wider variety of muscles.

Genetics also play a big role in the appearance of our mid-sections, with some people being predisposed to having leaner, flatter stomachs than others. For women in particular, having some body fat, especially around the stomach, is healthy, as Dr. Frankie Jackson-Spence, an NHS doctor and personal trainer, previously told Insider.

irin Ateken, a psychologist at healthcare consultancy WeCure, told Insider that online fitness trends, not limited to TikTok, can be dangerous because they set unrealistic standards of physical health and beauty, often without providing a background or technique information, which can cause injury.

"We are constantly bombarded by adverts selling us unrealistic expectations, 'quick fixes', and easy way-outs," she said. "In a time where we are calling out fake news, it can be quite dumbfounding that certain content even passes advertising standards. But sadly, the more people that engage, the wider the reach."

She said we live in a world where we expect instant gratification and results, and fad content can prey on this. If the results shown are unattainable, this may exacerbate mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and body image issues, she said.

Licensed counselor Laura Choate, a professor at Louisiana State University with a specialty in body image and eating disorders, told Insider that weight-loss content is particularly harmful for the group who use TikTok the most frequently and intensely young girls. According to market and consumer data website Statista, 32.5% of TikTok users in the US are age 10-19 18% female and 14% male. Overall, 16- to 24-year-olds make up 41% of all TikTok users.

"While an adult might be able to reason that you can't become as thin and toned as the girls in this video from just moving your torso around for 5 minutes per day, young girls might buy into these claims and feel like they have personally failed if they don't achieve these results," she said.

Therapist Sally Baker, who has specialized in eating disorders, said 16- to 24-year-olds are at a higher risk of poor self-esteem when comparing themselves with the people they see on social media. Meanwhile, the platforms gather data on how long users watch each clip to create algorithms that supply similar content. TikTok's algorithm has been hailed as one of the most effective in doing this.

Baker said if young people are spending a lot of time watching weight loss content and constantly comparing themselves to other people's appearances in TikToks, their stream is likely to more videos with similar content.

"The result is that TikTok viewers are less and less likely to be exposed to content that is varied or that would showcase body-positive clips or more realistic body shapes and sizes," she said.

According to Pam Vogel, a researcher at media watchdog Media Matters, weight loss trends thrive on TikTok more than Instagram or YouTube because the algorithm is highly sensitive. The For You feed also isn't limited to the accounts you follow, so it can show you content from anyone and anywhere.

"Users aren't necessarily opting in to the content that they're being served," she said. "I'm all for wellness, I'm all for healthy living, I think it's a great movement. But I think sometimes it can be a slippery slope into something more dangerous."

Tik Tok, and all social media platforms, have a responsibility to the health of their users, Ateken said. Otherwise, she's concerned social media platforms aren't doing enough to safeguard people's wellbeing.

Baker said a problem with social media posts is viewers "don't know what they don't know" about unsubstantiated claims and the limitations of diet culture.

"What they do know though is that they often feel an increased sense of low mood after time online and greater dissatisfaction with themselves," she said. "What they are struggling to identify its not them that have failed, it's the content that has failed them."

Mouth Sores from Chemo: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments – Healthline

While youre receiving treatment for cancer, some of the drugs you take can cause painful sores to develop inside your mouth. You can also get them if youve had a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant as part of your cancer care.

Although they often heal on their own, these mouth sores can make it uncomfortable to eat and talk. Well discuss what you can do to relieve the pain and prevent them from getting worse.

Mouth sores can be a common side effect of cancer treatment. The condition, known as stomatitis or mucositis, is an inflammation of the tissues inside your mouth.

Whitish, ulcer-like sores can form on your cheeks, gums, lips, tongue, or on the roof or floor of your mouth. Even if you dont develop mouth ulcers, you may have patches that feel inflamed and painful, as if theyve been burned.

Anyone who is receiving chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant can develop mouth sores as a side effect of these treatments.

If you have dry mouth or gum disease, or if your teeth and gums are not well taken care of, you may be at a higher risk of getting mouth sores during your treatment. Women and people who smoke or drink alcohol are also at a higher risk, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation.

If youre receiving chemotherapy, the sores could begin forming anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks after your treatment. Depending on the specific cause, the sores could go away on their own in a few weeks, or they could last longer.

Its important to find ways to manage your pain and to watch for signs of an infection. Cancer-related mouth sores can lead to weight loss, dehydration, and other serious complications.

Cancer cells can grow very quickly. The aim of cancer treatment is to stop or slow down that growth. The cells in the mucous membranes lining your mouth are also fast-growing cells, so cancer treatments affect them, too.

Cancer treatments also keep the cells in your mouth from being able to repair themselves efficiently when theyre damaged.

Radiation therapy can also damage the glands in your mouth that make saliva. A dry mouth is more susceptible to infections that cause mouth sores.

If youve had a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant, sores may be a sign that youve developed a condition known as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).

When this happens, the cells in your body are attacking the transplanted cells as though they were an unhealthy invader. According to research published in Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry, short-term (acute) GVHD occurs in 50 to 70 percent of stem cell transplant cases and longer-term (chronic) GVHD is seen in 30 to 50 percent of cases.

The form of GVHD that causes mouth sores is usually mild, and doctors often treat it with corticosteroid medications.

Its important to talk with your doctor if you develop mouth sores after a stem cell transplant, as some kinds of GVHD can turn serious if left untreated.

There is a good chance that youll experience mouth sores at some point during your cancer treatment. Researchers estimate that 20 to 40 percent of those who have chemotherapy and 80 percent of those who have high-dose chemotherapy will develop mucositis afterward.

Still, there are steps you and your cancer care team can take to lower your risk, reduce the severity of the sores, and promote faster healing.

About a month before your cancer treatment begins, schedule an appointment with your dentist to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. If you have cavities, broken teeth, or gum disease, its important to come up with a dental treatment plan to take care of these conditions so they dont lead to infections later, when your immune system may be vulnerable.

If you wear braces or dentures, ask your dentist to check the fit and remove any part of the device you dont need during your treatment.

Its very important to maintain good oral hygiene practices throughout your treatment to lower your risk of infection. Brush and floss gently but regularly, avoiding any painful areas. You can also ask your dentist whether a mouth rinse with fluoride is advisable in your case.

For certain kinds of chemotherapy (bolus 5fluorouracil chemotherapy and some high-dose therapies), your healthcare team may give you ice chips to chew for 30 minutes before your treatment. This type of cold therapy can lower your risk of getting mouth sores later.

During treatment of some blood cancers, doctors may give you injections of palifermin, also known as human keratinocyte growth factor-1 (KGF-1), to prevent mouth sores.

If youre scheduled to receive high-dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy, your cancer care team may prepare your mouth using low-level laser therapy beforehand to keep you from getting mouth sores.

For people who have radiation therapy for head and neck cancers, doctors may prescribe this medicated mouthwash to minimize mouth sores.

The length of time your mouth sores may last depends on the specific cancer treatment youve had. Here are some estimates broken down by treatment:

To ease discomfort and keep your mouth from feeling dry, you may want to try rinsing with a mild saltwater or baking soda solution. Heres how to make each of them:

Your cancer care team may recommend that you use a lubricating liquid (artificial saliva) to moisten the inside of your mouth if dryness is a problem. These liquids are usually gel-like. They coat your mouth with a thin film to help ease discomfort and promote healing.

Some people have found it useful to rinse with a blend of medications called the magic mouthwash. Formulas for this mouthwash vary, but most of them include a combination of medications to treat different symptoms, including:

Magic or miracle mouthwash solutions usually have to be prescribed by a doctor and prepared by a pharmacist, although some people mix up an over-the-counter version at home.

There isnt enough research to say for sure whether magic mouthwash works. If you think youd like to try it, talk with your oncologist or a healthcare professional about whether its a good idea for you.

Here are a few more things you can try at home that may help ease pain from mouth sores:

Gain A Ton Of Weight Quickly Without Trying (Yes, It’s A Joke) – knue.com

I could probably count on one hand the number of humans I've ever met who are TRYING to gain weight. Yes, they exist. They are usually male, but not always. And it's more about gaining muscle or gaining weight healthfully.

Disclaimer: This is NOT for those people. This is friendly sarcasm for the rest of us.

So often we are focused on how to LOSE weight. We know the rules and/or recommendations. We may abide by them. We may not. I've found reverse psychology to be helpful when it comes to dealing with the subconsciously rebellious human (me, too) and so, perhaps turning the tables on our psyche may be helpful. Maybe not, but hey...what have we got to lose? (wink, wink again)

And now, how to gain a bunch of weight without even trying very hard:

Eat when you're not hungry. It all begins here. Override your body's signals and and fall right into the pleasure trap of salt, sugar, and fat.

Make those calories count. In other words, do your best to avoid any whole grains, lean meats, or vegetables. You can eat fruit but only if it's in juice form or covered in sugar. Bonus points for heavy creams poured on top. You got this.

Ditch the water and drink only sugar-filled bevs instead. Drinking sugary beverages, "fruit juices" (look for high-fructose corn syrup in the list of ingredients) and lots of alcohol is one of the quickest ways to pack on the pounds.

Remain as still and sedentary as humanly possible. In fact, let's pretend we're beached whales, stuck and unable to move around. The less physical activity, the better. Don't even go for take-out. Order in and do your best to barely walk to get that bag. Sit down ASAP and chow down.

Extra credit? Look for ways to add calories whenever possible. That greasy junk food needs a little extra cheese, doesn't it? I mean, extra gravy is good on everything isn't it? In fact, just add an extra spoonful of butter as a general rule. Bonus points for removing any veggie that accidentally fell into whatever it is we're eating.

OK, all joking aside. After the last year of quarantine eating and now struggling to get back on a better nutritional path, I'm reacquainting myself with healthy eating habits. And they are habits. Once we start practicing less-than-healthy ones, it's easy to fall into a rut. And since getting back on track can be a struggle at first, I find that humor and laughing at myself a bit can be both entertaining--and clarifying.

The Difficulties of Losing the "Quarantine 15" – Cal Times

Dieting for weight loss is something that can be very difficult to stick to. Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic started last year and we were all forced into lockdown, many of us found ourselves stocking up on and eating greater amounts of unhealthy comfort food. Unfortunately, stocking up on that comfort food has caused weight gain amongst many Americans.

Sometimes referred to as the quarantine 15 or covid curves, it refers to weight gain throughout the length of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although these terms have become the brunt of jokes on social media platforms, weight gain is no laughing matter.

I personally have struggled with weight almost my entire life. It was in sixth grade when I started to blow up like a balloon.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a 12-year-old boys weight can range anywhere from 67 to 130 pounds. When I was 12 years old, I was considered overweight at about 150 pounds. However, as the years progressed on, my weight continued to rise.

I was constantly bullied because of my weight. I heard almost every insult ranging from fat to pig and anything else that was very derogative. This only caused me to eat more.

At the beginning of my freshman year in high school, I know I weighed a little over 200 pounds. By the time I graduated high school, I nearly weighed almost 300 pounds. I knew that being only 17 years old at the time, I should not have weighed that much. I tried everything to shed off those pounds, but nothing seemed to work and I would confide my stress with food.

When I began my freshman year at Cal U, I weighed approximately 305 pounds. That year, I took action and started exercising at the gym and eating healthy. By the end of freshman year, I dropped more than 20 pounds and I never felt better. It felt so good to lose that amount of weight. Instead of gaining that freshman 15, I happily lost it instead.

Unfortunately, I quickly gained that weight back by the time sophomore year had started. I began to eat carelessly and stopped going to the gym. I would even eat food when I was bored, which I know is extremely bad to do.

At the start of the pandemic, in March 2020, I weighed in around 290 pounds. However, being stocked up on food and nowhere to go, I began to eat again. I dreaded every time stepping onto the scale and seeing a big number appear. Within a few months, I had easily gained well over 10 to 15 pounds.

Fast forward to present day, I vowed to take action and lose weight, no matter what I would have to put my body through. It saddens me to know I am overweight and I am in denial that I have let my body and eating habits get severely out of control. So, I began a diet to lose weight on Jan. 18.

My diet consists of this app I have downloaded onto my phone, counting caloriesas in watching and logging what I eat throughout the daya little bit of exercise, drinking plenty of water, and being sure to avoid any unhealthy foods.

The app on my phone is called Lose It! and it is definitely keeping me on track and helping me lose those pesky pounds quickly. This free and easy-to-use app is simple. You keep track of what you have eaten throughout the day, stick to a diet plan that works best for you, and should see results shortly afterwards.

I chose this app because my mom inspired my sister, Megan, and I to download it and give it a try. We were all in agreement we wanted to lose weight. Furthermore, my mom became involved with a class of other fellow people who wanted to lose weight and this was the app that was recommended.

Being on a diet is difficult because I always have cravings and always think of breaking it. I put myself on a very strict diet and began to count my calorie intake for the day. Seeing how many calories are in certain foods shocked me and I started eating healthy.

My biggest inspiration to lose weight is for my sisters wedding that will be occurring in just about three months at the end of May 2021. Not only do I want to look good for my sisters big day, but I also want to feel good as well.

Like I stated before, being on a diet is challenging. I sometimes feel like a crazy person at times because I want to snack on some chocolate or something else that is considered unhealthy.
