If Your Boss Asks You to Work Out More, Don’t and Say You Did – VICE

Worker wellness programs are bad, full stop. Theyre discriminatory, ineffective, and super creepy. (The number Ive steps Ive taken per day are between me and God, i.e., my Fitbit.) Theyre also a bit of a misnomer. It would be more accurate to call them workplace wellness programs, as such programs efforts to improve individual workers physical health and well-being are ultimately in the service of increasing profit. People arent people, per this dystopian view of labor, but rather vectors for productivity that should be eliminated if need be.

You can see this logic at play in a new study on the economic benefits of exercise, as reported by Reuters on Wednesday. According to the study, led by health insurance group Vitality and think tank RAND Europe, employers could boost the world economy by as much as $100 billion a year if they got their workers to exercise more (think: walking 15 minutes daily or jogging every day). Exercising more would extend a persons life expectancy, the study authors say, which will keep that person alive longer, thereby keeping them working and contributing to the global economy for longer. Adding a bit of exercise to a staffers daily routine would also increase their productivity in the workplace as theyd be less likely to get sick and would conceivably take fewer days off from work.

Now, dont get me wrong: Exercising as a form of preventative health care is very real, as exercising regularly has been proven to decrease the likelihood of several chronic diseases. Its certainly not insidious to recommend that. What is unsavory about all this is the line of thinking that masks the desire to increase profit with concern for worker wellnessa logic that might be good for capitalism, but is very bad for people. It measures a workers health in terms of their productivity, equating greater productivity with good health and vice versa. By this logic, a person in poor health will be a detriment to workplace productivity, and becomes just one more expense for employers to cut, wrote labor organizer Lena Solow in a piece about worker wellness programs for The New Republic in September.

Our mental health and physical well-being cannot be measured in terms of workplace performance, and our worth in the global capitalist system cannot be valued in terms of our contribution to the economy. No matter how low your step count for the day might be, its the system thats unwell, not you. If your boss says you have to walk more, just lie and say you did.

Three Months of Full Body Workouts Helped This Guy Get Shredded at 40 – menshealth.com

When Mat Smith and his wife started a family, he decided to cancel his gym membership in favor of what he calls The MatCave. The 40-year-old senior design engineer from Cheltenham, United Kingdom, turned the garage into his own carefully arranged workout space. But then, as often happens, life intervened. Three years later, looking to have a second son, Smith and his wife realized theyd need to move to a new house; the MatCave came along, but Smith devoted most of his time to renovating the new place.

Over four months working in the hot summer weather, he lost 8 pounds, mostly muscle mass. His barely ate while he worked, and spent his days stressed out. (He has obsessive-compulsive disorder, which made rearranging the new place especially challenging.) By the time he finished, he was completely worn down, mentally and physically.

Around that time he happened to see an Instagram post promoting LiveUP, a twelve-week online coaching program for men. He recognized the names involved; hed followed Ultimate Performance founder Nick Mitchells program once before to get in shape for his wedding. He hadnt been able to afford the personal training program, but when he saw there was an online option, he immediately signed up.

It was a new experience for him. Used to working out alone and designing his own programs, he this time gave himself over to his trainer. He cut his workouts from four or five times a week to three, moving from split-body training to full-body workouts. He ramped up his cardio with two interval sessions a week. Along the way he submitted weekly progress photos and found a supportive community of fellow members online.

Smiths trainer had him focus on a balanced diet rich in whole foods. He stopped counting calories and honed in on quantifying serving sizes. He dropped dairy and caffeine. Since starting the nutrition plan I have noticed significant improvement in my overall health and wellbeing, he says. Even still, he admits at the beginning he cheated on the diet because of special social occasions.

He quickly saw changes, and when he finished the program 12 weeks later, hed lost nearly 14 pounds, while his body fat percentage had dropped from more than 15 percent into the eight or nine percent range.

My biggest motivation for maintaining a healthy lifestyle is our 4-year-old son, Smith says. He wants to set a positive example, and remain an active part of his sons life. Hes also discovered a new confidence and belief in himself. Hes eager for the next challenge: maintaining his healthy lifestyle with the impending birth of a second son.

Hes even using his Instagram account to inspire those who, like him, came to fitness later in life, who may find the traditional gym setting intimidating, and who may find exercise useful for their mental healthin the hope that exercise can help others manage their health, the way it has helped me.

Packed house at Senior Living Health and Financial Expo – Brooklyn Reporter

BAY RIDGE The Brooklyn Eagle, Home Reporter and Brooklyn Spectator hosted a well-attended senior living health and financial expo on Friday, Nov. 1 in the grand ballroom of the Dyker Beach Golf Club, 1030 86th Street.

There was food, fun and freebies for those attending, along with informative exhibit tables by hospitals, realtors, law firms, local businesses, and therapists and senior care specialists.

In all, there were over 25 exhibitors at the expo offering information packets, product demonstrations and all kinds of free promotional items. There were raffles, refreshments and prizes galore.

The keynote speakers were NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Islands Dr. Mark Kindschuh, chairperson of emergency medicine, and Renata Landskind and Terence Ricaforte of Landskind & Ricaforte Law Group. Also speaking at the expo were Chip Walker, supervising pharmacist and G.M. at Columbia Care and Steven Williams, community outreach trainer at Accessible Dispatch.

Kindschuh, a board-certified physician who lives in Bay Ridge, spoke first. He has served as chairperson of the Department of Emergency Medicine at NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island since 2016. Kindschuh played a vital role in the transformation of the hospitals emergency department and oversees its services to the South Brooklyn community.

Lets start with the facts, said Kindschuh. You cant really argue with the facts. If you are 65 years or older, you have about a 50 percent chance in a year of ending up in the emergency department. The Baby Boomers have gotten older and were still here. He attributed the majority of visits by senior to such things as falls, taking the wrong medication, poor eyesight and safety issues in the home.

Landskind and Ricaforte oversee a full-service law firm providing estate-planning services to the pre and post-retirement community. They said they were determined to keep their law practice small so that they are able to offer personalized services to their clients that larger law firms cant provide.

The biggest concern people have as they age is the cost of aging and the risks that go along with it, said Ricaforte. Not a lot of people know about it so these expos are tremendous in spreading the knowledge that people need to understand all their options for themselves and their families. Thats why its so important to get the word out. All these vendors here can help all of us as we age, added Ricaforte.

Walker discussed the benefits of medical marijuana. Columbia Care is a medical marijuana dispensary, he explained. It is a legitimate option for your healthcare. What we do for every patient who comes in is talk to you about your medications and past medical history so that we can understand whats going on with all the symptoms youre looking to treat.

He further explained, If you have aches and pains and are taking over-the-counter medications, this is another option to replace some of those medications or add to them to help ease your aches and pains.

Williams was the last to speak. He explained that his company provides wheelchair accessible taxis throughout the five boroughs of New York City. He said that he has worked in the healthcare industry for six years and his goal is to see New York City become a more accessible city.

Everyone is eligible for this program and you dont have to apply or enroll, explained Williams. These are taxis that are larger than a regular taxi and the great thing about the program is that you pay the same fare as a regular taxi cab. You get more for the money with someone trained to assist you and a larger vehicle for easier access. You dont have to be in a wheelchair to use the program, he added.

A number of vendors had participated in earlier expos. Its good to be back at the senior fair, said Louis Peters of United Healthcare AMP Insurance Brokerage, 7709 Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge. This is a wonderful program where we can see all the vendors. We represent many, many insurance companies and today were thrilled to have the chance to talk to some seniors because this is their insurance election period between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7.

Michael Devigne, program manager for the Fifth Avenue BID, said that his group was working on a number of programs to hopefully roll out more senior discounts and make seniors aware of whats available to them in the BID. Well be doing window decals on the businesses and doing a mailing to let them know about all the great stores there and where they can get senior discounts.

Thomas Ryan, director of marketing at the Menorah Center for Rehabilitation, said that the health expo was an important means of reaching out to the community on a grassroots level and getting the seniors involved.

It offers us an opportunity to let them know about all the options of health care, what we have and what we can do for them, said Ryan. The more education you provide, the more you know, the better services we can give.

Peter Killen, president of the Bay Ridge branch of AARP, said that the expo was invaluable in helping seniors. The companies and organizations that are here are here for the seniors as we are at AARP, said Killen. The Home Reporter, Brooklyn Spectator and Brooklyn Eagle are essential to get all the news out thats important to our citizens and definitely our seniors.

This was the first expo for Kerisha Wynter, supervisor at Humana at Home Senior Bridge Private Pay Services. We are a private paid home care company that provides all the services you need to take care of your loved ones at home, she told this paper.

Franco Ullo of Jag-One Physical Therapy was also making his first appearance at the senior expo. As we get older, there are ways to improve and maintain the quality of life by exercising mobility and were here to help that community thrive.

Stretched Out, a new business that offers therapeutic sports and wellness services at its location at 8121 Third Avenue in Bay Ridge, announced that it was offering free exercise and therapy sessions to veterans and service members for one day. On Veterans Day, were going to close down to our clients and were going to serve only the military, John Brancato told this paper.

Other exhibitors at the expo included Advanced Hearing Center, Ben Bay Realty/HSBC, FDNY, Caption Call, Investors Bank, Island Federal Credit Union, Island Shores, Northfield Bank, Norwegian Christian Home, NY Connects Dept. of Aging, OHEL, Prudential, Senior Bridge, Therapy-in-Motion and Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology.

Russell Craig Targove was the master of ceremonies at the expo and there were also blood pressure screenings and other activities throughout each event.

Guests were exceedingly pleased with the scope of the expo. Ive been to these before and I really find them very energizing and informative because all the groups that are here service our community in Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights, said attendee June Johnson.

Veteran Bill Humienny also said it was important to come to an event like this because of the information offered. You learn about all the different doctors, hospitals and lawyers, said Humienny. Ive come to a couple of these and this is one of the best Ive been to.

Exercise Programs for Peripheral Neuropathy | Healthfully

Peripheral neuropathy occurs when nerves become compressed, injured or severed. This results in symptoms including pain, numbness, tingling and lack of coordination, particularly in the feet and hands. While these symptoms can make exercise more difficult, exercise is highly beneficial to those who experience nerve damage. Understanding what exercises benefit you most can help to reduce peripheral neuropathy symptoms.

A number of conditions that affect the nerves can cause peripheral neuropathy. These include diabetes, which is one of the most common causes; infection; injury; autoimmune disease; poison exposure; and tumor growth. If nerve cells have not been completely killed off due to peripheral neuropathy, nerve cells can regenerate and symptoms can improve. Following an exercise program for peripheral neuropathy can help to reduce symptoms while nerve cells heal. As part of a comprehensive treatment plan, exercise programs for peripheral neuropathy should include a combination of resistance, cardiovascular and flexibility training.

Repeated stretching throughout the day as part of your exercise program can help to relieve tingling and numbness associated with peripheral neuropathy, according to the American Academy of Neurology. Examples of beneficial stretches include reaching the arms up over the head, reaching for your toes while standing, and performing torso rotations. Hold stretches for 30 seconds each. Perform these and other stretching exercises for five-minute intervals six times per day to experience symptom improvement.

Cardiovascular exercise is the calorie-burning portion of a peripheral neuropathy exercise program. Getting your heart pumping helps you to maintain a healthy weight and stimulates blood flow. Water aerobics is a low-impact exercise that does not require those with peripheral neuropathy to place pressure on their feet an area where many experience pain. Walking or riding an exercise bicycle are additional methods that can improve symptoms.

Resistance training for peripheral neuropathy involves lifting weights, using resistance bands or leveraging the bodys own resistance in order to build muscle. If you are prone to peripheral neuropathy in the feet or lower legs, calf raises and toe pointing and flexing are resistance-training exercises that build muscles in these areas. For the arms, wrist circles, bicep curls and shoulder presses can be beneficial. If you are utilizing weights, start slowly to prevent post-exercise pain and soreness. Resistance training is particularly helpful for older adults who are wheelchair-bound or unable to engage in cardiovascular exercise, according to Neurology Reviews.

Exercising to relieve peripheral neuropathy offers benefits for both mind and body. Exercise stimulates blood flow, which can help to reduce cramping in affected areas and strengthen nerve tissue. Resistance training increases muscle strength, which prevents muscle wasting and increases stability. Peripheral neuropathy exercises also can help to relieve stress that can lead to depression in those with this condition.

As a fitness professionalyour challenge will be to consider:

Modifying an exercise program for a high risk clientwill ensuretheirpelvic floor is protected fromfurther damage. This is no different to an injury to any other one of their muscle groups.

For example,if your client has an injuredankle,it is essential to give that ankle time to heal, before returning to exercise or sport. This would be done by modifying theirexercise programtorebuildthe strength, flexibility and stability of theirankle, until the healing process is complete.

The same is the case for the pelvic floor, whichshould be protected from further damage, whilst allowing the client a suitable timeframe to get back in control.

Occupational Therapy Home Exercise Programs | SportsRec

Occupational therapy home exercise programs can help individuals of all ages, ranging from children to seniors afflicted with medical conditions that include stroke and musculoskeletal abnormalities. Occupational therapy emphasizes the emotional, social and physiological effects of injury or illness. Done consistently, exercises can help individuals recuperate properly in preparation for returning to a functional lifestyle. Check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program.

Occupational therapy home exercise programs can increase your shoulder area range of motion, according to HEP2go.com. Use either a cane, broomstick or wand for this sitting or standing exercise. Bend your elbows to a 90-degree angle so your forearms are parallel to the floor. Place the item in your hands, holding it palms facing upward. Gently and slowly move the item to your right while feeling your shoulder joint rotate. Hold this position five seconds. Return to the center position. Relax 10 seconds. Slowly swing the item to your left. Hold this position five seconds. Return to the original position. Relax 10 seconds. During this maneuver, your unaffected arm does most of the work while your affected-side arm stays partially relaxed. Do this exercise five times to each side. Do not move your back during this exercise.

Walking needs to be included in an occupational therapy home exercise program to help individuals return to the functioning level available prior to injury, according to the American Heart Association. Walking aids in overall muscle strengthening and flexibility, and it can help to improve your capability of performing every day tasks such as lifting items and improving exercise tolerance. It can enhance blood lipid levels and cardiovascular fitness, improve oxygen intake and utilization while also increasing independence levels. If walking is too difficult, walking on a treadmill offers the advantage of using harnesses and rail supports. Walking for a minimum of 20 minutes on at least three days weekly is recommended.

Occupational therapy home exercise programs can increase your upper body flexibility through trunk rotations, according to HEP2go.com. Sit upright in a firm chair with your feet firmly planted on the floor. Lift your arms and cross them over your chest, palms lying flat on your upper chest. Rest your fingertips against your shoulder area. Slowly and gently rotate your upper body to the right as far as possible. Keep your head aligned with your shoulders, do not rotate your neck. Hold this stretch for 10 seconds. Feel the stretch along your abdominal, back and waist area. Slowly return to the original position. Relax 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise three times.

Occupational therapy home exercise programs can improve body balance while strengthening your leg muscles, according to HEP2go.com. Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart. Do a modified leg balancing exercise by lifting your right foot, placing your body weight onto your left foot. Keep your right knee slightly bent and maintain your balance. Gently and slowly move your right foot behind your body. Hold this position for as long as possible. Slowly return your leg to the original position. Relax 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise five times with both legs.
