Seascape Village Fitness replaces spa

APTOS - Jim and Kathy Tucker see a future in fitness. That's why they invested more than $150,000 to make over the former Sanctuary Day Spa into a space where they could offer personal training.

Seascape Village Fitness is a short walk from Seascape Physical Therapy, where the Tuckers have helped more than 1,000 clients since opening in 2003.

The new space, which opened in May, is 3,400 square feet, and stocked with a variety of fitness equipment. Memberships start at $99 to $149 a month.

Besides weights, there are kettle bells, ropes as seen on "The Biggest Loser," and suspension training using straps and bands to build core strength.

"It's an expansion of what I do as a physical therapist," said Jim, 48, of Aptos, a board-certified orthopedic specialist.

"People were begging us to do this," said his wife Kathy, a nurse and massage therapist, recalling how physical therapy patients "wanted to work out in our office."

Members undergo a fitness assessment and work with a coach.

"We know how hard it is to come up with your own program," Kathy Tucker said.

Merrylee Vernazza, 74, is one of the regulars.

She came to the Tuckers for physical therapy after neck and back surgery.
