ALBANY, NY & NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

As part of its mission to provide quality healthcare for its subscribers, CDPHP and Healthways (HWAY) today announced a three-year extension of their longstanding agreement to offer the award-winning SilverSneakers Fitness Program. The partnership between CDPHP and Healthways offering SilverSneakers began in 2004 and the program is available to more than 30,000 eligible CDPHP Medicare Advantage members in 24 New York counties.

SilverSneakers, the nations leading exercise program designed to keep Medicare-eligible adults active and healthy, will continue to be available to members of the following CDPHP plans through 2015:

CDPHP Group Medicare Rx

CDPHP Core Rx (PPO)

CDPHP Prime Rx (PPO)

Studies have shown that seniors enrolled in a regular fitness program have significantly fewer inpatient admissions, emergency rooms visits, and lower health care costs, said John D. Bennett, MD, president and CEO, CDPHP. Were proud to once again partner with SilverSneakers to provide this valuable benefit to our members, added Bennett.

Using proven methodologies based upon more than 16 years of science and outcomes, the SilverSneakers Fitness Program increases physical activity in Medicare-eligible adults, resulting in higher well-being and lower health care costs. SilverSneakers engages participants in more frequent strength training, aerobic, and flexibility exercise through access to a variety of venues and programming designed specifically for older adults that incorporates social experiences.

The enduring success of the program is evidenced through the latest CDPHP SilverSneakers annual member survey. According to the 2011 results, 66% of CDPHP SilverSneakers enrollees report their health as excellent or very good; more than double the national average of 30% for older adults. Additionally, 87% of CDPHP SilverSneakers enrollees either maintained or increased their level of aerobic activity compared to a year ago, and more than half of SilverSneakers enrollees report improvement in arthritis pain and lower back pain since participating in the program.
