Football’s Secret Sports Science: The Power of Sleep – Bleacher Report

Sleep could be the next frontier of sports science, with Europes top-flight teams turning to experts to recharge their multimillion-pound assets and gain a competitive advantage on the field. As reported by Mark Bailey of the Telegraph, teams such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid are recruiting "sleep coaches" to help their players snooze better.

Why? Because, as Bailey put it, "Despite the boom in sports science services designed to improve every component of an athletes life, from nutrition and hydration to psychological wellbeing and physical conditioning, sleep is a subject which has often been neglected."

Studies published in the World Journal of Biological Psychiatry agree, stating, "Sleep is crucial for psychological functioning and daily performance."

Which is why teams are investing heavily in things like sleep kits, personalised mattresses, daily wellbeing questionnaires on smartphones and tablets and, according to the Guardian, even "snoozeboxes" and "sleep pods," which players can use to rest between training sessions.

The Daily Mail even cited the work of sleep coach Nick Littlehales as being partly responsible for the extended career of Ryan Giggs, saying "natural ability, a rigid conditioning programme and regular yoga" all helped, but it was the Manchester United legend's willingness to learn about his nocturnal activity that may have played a key role.

So what are the benefits of a good nights sleep? Can having an expert invade your bedroom make that much of a difference? Finally, if all of the above does work, which players are embracing it, and what methods are they using to wield its power?

The Science of Sleep in Sport

Studies show sleep can impact everything from mental focus to energy and recovery. This is because, contrary to popular belief, players don't get fitter on the training ground. No, training merely provides the body with the necessary stimulus. Its the period players spend sleeping when the body recovers and adapts, becoming faster and stronger.

That's because your immune systemthe bodys defence mechanism that stops us becoming illrecuperates. Your rejuvenating hormones, like human growth hormone (HGH), begin to naturally peak. Could this be the secret to LeBron James' decorated career? Maybe, as ESPN.comreports he sleeps, "an average of 12 hours per day, compared to about seven hours for the average American."

Where does this nocturnal magic come from? According to research published in Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience, its closely related to our previously mentioned neurotransmitters.

Neurotransmitters are the chemicals that relay signals from a neuron to a target cell across a synapse within the body. Pretty much every function within the body is controlled (or impacted) by neurotransmitters, from emotional states to mental performance and our perception of fatigue and pain. Theyre the brains little messengers, and if theyre not working correctly due to lack of sleep, you cant expect to be effective come matchday.

Obviously, its hard to quantify just how much of an impact lack of sleep has on players, but theres strong evidence to suggest its amplified when battling jet lag resulting from long-haul flights. Jet lag is a term used to refer to the disruption of circadian rhythmsour 24-hour physiological body clock that determines when hormones peak and dipwhich can cause extreme fatigue.

Of particular importance during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, research published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport monitored the impact travelling 14,695 kilometers across 11 time zones had on players. It found through self-reporting questionnaires that, "Sleep disruption during and following long-haul air travel, together with exacerbated jet-lag symptoms may result in reduced player wellness. Consequently, player preparedness for subsequent training and competition may be impeded."

This is why the Daily Mail reported that England invested heavily in "support staff, hi-tech training facilities and luxury accommodation" during their 2014 World Cup campaign.

This was after their previous Brazilian World Cup in 1950 went down as "an object lesson in how not to win the World Cup" after the team arrived following a 31-hour flight, during which they made just four stops to refuel.

Its also why the Daily Mail reported club managers were frustrated with the amount of distance their players had to travel during a fortnight of international fixtures.Most notably,FilipeLuis, Oscar andWillianwho all played for Chelsea at the timeandLiverpool's PhilippeCoutinho travelled a total of14,600 miles to compete with Brazil in Singapore, and Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez made a 14,500-mile round-trip journey to play for Chile in his home country.

Although articleslike that published in The Sunthat compare Arsenal and Bayern Munichs travel habits might seem trivial, they could play a key role in the teams success. All because in a sport where the difference between winning and losing is so small, the difference could be a business class flight compared to a premium economy one.

Train Hard, Sleep Hard

So why is sleep so important after periods of intense training?

The answer is complexand sports science is still trying to understand the intricacies of itbut the short answer is because this is the time your body uses to repair, recover and regrow.

During a match, the body's oxygen usage skyrockets, and there is a dramatic increase in lactic acid accumulation in the muscles (that burning sensation you get as you tire). This, in turn, causes the body to pullalkaline reserves from bones and other mineral-dense sources.

Equally, tiny micro-tears are formed in the muscles when a person lifts weights, and the bodys molecular form of energy, adenosinetriphosphate, is exhausted.

Needless to say, the human body has a lot to cope with, and the more miles a player covers on the pitch, the more sleep they will need. According to The Sun, this means Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool should have slept like babies over the Christmas period after totalling 464.8 kilometers in their first four matches, an average of 116.2 kilometers a match.

It is an idea supported by scientists from the University of Torontowho monitored the sleep patterns of six runners following a 92-kilometer ultramarathon. Results showed sleep time for each runner increased significantly compared to normal sleep patterns on each of the four nights after the marathon, illustrating the bodys desperate need for quality sleep to recover.

Using an electroencephalogram (EEG), which utilizes electrodes to measure electrical activity in the brain, they specifically found long periods of "deep sleep" were induced on the first two nights. This led researchers to conclude this objective and quantitative increase in total sleep time, and particularly deep sleep, supports the theory that its incredibly important for optimal recovery in athletes.

Again, reasons for this are incredibly complex, but one is thatHGHpeaks during deep sleep. HGH is a peptide hormone that stimulates cell reproduction, cell regeneration, growth and recovery and is thus one of the most revitalizing hormones in the body. Growth hormone in sports – Wikipedia

Growth hormone in sports refers to the use of growth hormones (GH or HGH) for athletic enhancement, as opposed to growth hormone treatment for medical therapy. Human Growth Hormone is a prescription medication, meaning that its distribution and use without a prescription is illegal.[1] There is limited evidence that GH doping improves athletic performance, although the perception that it does is common in the sporting community.[2] Potential side effects of long term GH doping could mirror the symptoms found in sufferers of acromegaly, a disease in which the anterior pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone.[2]

Human growth hormone occurs naturally in the human body. Use of exogenous human growth hormone (HGH), via injection, was originally for medical purposes until athletes began abusing HGH with the goal of increasing their abilities. Before recombinant human growth hormone (rHGH) was developed in 1981, HGH was only available from cadavers. The arrival of rHGH combined with other peptide hormone advancements has increased the availability of HGH on both the legitimate and black markets.[3] The first description of the use of GM as a doping agent was Dan Duchaines Underground Steroid handbook which emerged from California in 1982; it is not known where and when GM was first used this way.[4] In 1989 the International Olympic Committee became the first to brand human growth hormone a banned substance.[3] Although abuse of human growth hormone for athletic purposes is illegal in the U.S., over the past decade it appears that abuse of HGH is present in all levels of sport.[5][6] This is fueled at least in part by the fact that HGH is more difficult to detect than most other performance-enhancing drugs, such as anabolic steroids. Athletes competing in power sports, bodybuilding, professional wrestling, mixed martial arts, swimming, baseball, strength sports, track and field, cycling, soccer, weight lifting, skiing and endurance sports have been said to abuse human growth hormone, including in combination with other performance-enhancing drugs such as androgenic anabolic steroids including testosterone, certain products which claim to enhance HGH, and erythropoietin (among others).[3][5][6][7]

There has never been an adequately large randomized controlled trial showing definitively that HGH provides benefits to athletes and that there are no significant adverse drug reactions; there have been many small studies and several of these studies were recently reviewed and analyzed in a meta-analysis.[5] While the authors indicated that the meta-analysis was limited by the fact that few of the included studies evaluated athletic performance and by the fact that dosing protocols in the studies may not reflect real-world doses and regimens, their conclusions were as follows:

"Claims that growth hormone enhances physical performance are not supported by the scientific literature. Although the limited available evidence suggests that growth hormone increases lean body mass, it may not improve strength; in addition, it may worsen exercise capacity and increase adverse events. More research is needed to conclusively determine the effects of growth hormone on athletic performance."[5]

With regard to adverse drug reactions, there is data from animal studies that "long-term administration of human growth hormone can increase the risk of diabetes, retention of fluids, joint and muscle pain, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, osteoporosis, irregular menstruation, impotence and elevated HDL cholesterol."[6]

A report from the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on steroid and growth hormone use found that the misguided use of HGH by professional athletes and entertainers was fuelling the industry peddling the drug to the general public for medically inappropriate uses.[8]

Studies have found that HGH reduces body fat[5][7] and increases lean body mass.[5] However, no increase in muscle strength was observed.[5][6] This may be explained by short-term fluid retention.[5]

Researchers are still debating whether the more noticeable muscles are larger in size as well. It should be clarified, though, that muscle mass is not the same as muscle strength. Some say that human growth hormone will build muscle mass through raised insulin-like growth factors levels leading to heightened protein synthesis without any side effects[9] while other researchers argue that there have been no such findings on young healthy adults.[7] The second argument is more supported by research discoveries that HGH affects muscle protein synthesis no differently than a placebo does.[3]

HGH may build up connective tissue within muscles, at least in the short term.[7] If these effects are real they may promote resistance to injury or faster repair [but] would make the muscle no more capable of force generation.[7] With the release of the Mitchell Report on December 13, 2007, 86 players were revealed to have used performance-enhancing drugs while playing in the Major Leagues. The report stated: "Players who use Human Growth Hormone apparently believe that it assists their ability to recover from injuries and fatigue".[10]

Acromegaly patients, who suffer from natural growth hormone levels of up to 100 times higher than normal, have lower stamina towards physical activity than people with regular levels.[7] When the patients are treated and their growth hormone levels decrease, their stamina improves.[7] This knowledge is part of the evidence behind the new belief that athletes who use supplemental HGH to raise their levels far above average could actually decrease their exercise tolerance, and thus hurt their athletic performance.[7] Further backing was provided in a study done by the Danish Institute of Sports Medicine. They found cyclists of good health and endurance were unable to complete accustomed cycling tasks after administration of exogenous hGH and concluded that HGH can inhibit recuperation from exercise.[7] Participants have also been found to have lower stamina after HGH treatment along with higher rates of fatigue.[5]

Exercise is a lifelong commitment, adding health benefits at every stage of life.

Fans Weren’t Saying ‘Bud,’ They Were Saying ‘Boo’ At Selig’s Hall Of Fame Induction – Press Box

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- If indeed there is no crying in baseball, a sentiment popularized by a classic line from the movie "A League of Their Own," then surely there is no booing in Cooperstown. But, as Bud Selig, could attest, there was a little of both during the 78th Hall of Fame induction ceremony July 30.

As the game's ninth commissioner, Selig presided over a period of unprecedented financial growth and ushered in a sorely needed era of labor peace that included an overdue drug testing program. But for the general public it wasn't enough to hide the two black marks of his tenure -- the strike that left the 1994 season without a World Series and the so-called Steroid Era that demolished home run records and eventually led to the testing agreement.

Selig was one of two executives inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame, along with Baltimore native John Schuerholz, and former players Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines and Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez. To say Selig got a lukewarm reception from a crowd of approximately 27,500, you would have to tune out the smattering of boos that accompanied his introduction -- perhaps the first time an HOF inductee got less than a positive reaction.

To his credit, while making sure to address the progress the game has made, Selig didn't ignore the lingering effect the 1994 season and the Steroid Era have on his legacy. He called the impact of the 1994 season the worst time of his life, a feeling shared by a significant contingent from Montreal, who were on hand to salute Raines' career with the Expos.

Many observers believe Montreal was the best team in baseball and headed to the World Series in 1994 -- and when the season was suspended without champions in either league, it signaled the beginning of the end of Major League Baseball in Montreal and led to the Expos eventually moving to Washington.

It was also significant Selig went out of his way to praise the late Michael Weiner, former executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, who was instrumental in agreeing to the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement that included blood testing for Human Growth Hormone.

Perhaps because many in baseball had turned a blind eye to the impending effect of steroids and HGH, that era undoubtedly was well under way when Selig became acting commissioner in 1992. Had Bart Giamatti lived to serve even a nominal term, Selig would have been little more than an active adviser, but instead, after a four-year indoctrination that included the devastating labor strife of 1994, he became the second-longest tenured commissioner in history.

Most of the owners who endured the fallout of the 1994 season believe the repercussions of that development led to what has become the longest stretch of labor peace since the first strike in 1972. But whether the pluses outweighed the minuses for baseball, it was evident July 30 that fans still consider the lost World Series of 1994 more important than anything good that may have resulted.

It's an era, much like the one that produced performance-enhancing drugs, that remains the biggest black mark for baseball since the gambling scandal in 1919. Within the industry, Selig gets extremely high marks for guiding baseball through a series of crises and controversies -- but there are hard-core fans who put 1994 and steroids together under his watch. And, oh yes, let's not forgot the 2002 All-Star game that ended in a tie -- in Selig's home town of Milwaukee, no less -- and resulted in a tumultuous 14-year debate over the merits of the game determining home-field advantage for the World Series.

Which is why there was some booing in Cooperstown.

Opko: Contrarian Play On Positive Update – Seeking Alpha

Opko Healthcare (NASDAQ:OPK) stock offers a good buying opportunity at its current beaten down price due to a number of reasons. The company recently provided an encouraging update about its hGH-CTP Phase 3 setback that happened in December last year. Opko also initiated a Phase 3 study for hGH-CTP in the pediatric segment. This positive news is expected to get the stock out of its rut. Further, the stock is also expected to benefit from positive revenue growth for the company's newly launched Rayaldee product.

The company recently reported positive topline data analysis of the Phase 3 study of its investigational long-acting human growth hormone product (hGH-CTP) in adults with growth hormone deficiency ('GHD). This is the same drug whose December 2016 results led to the steep decline in Opko share prices. The results at that time failed to show a statistically significant difference over placebo. However, later the anomaly was attributed to the existence of outliers. The company now carried out a sensitivity analysis to quantify the impact of outliers on the results. Consequently, the results excluding outliers showed statistically significant differences to placebo. The data is encouraging as the company recently started a global Phase 3 trial for the drug in pediatric GHD patients. The pediatric trials are important as Opko stands to share profits upon the commercial launch of the drug for the pediatric market.

However, the bigger impact of the announcement is that it goes to prove that stock markets overreacted to the results of December 2016. The stock slumped nearly 20 percent in a single day. However, the stock's beaten down price now provides a good opportunity to create a position in the company as it still retains its strong fundamentals as is evident from its latest data announcement.

Opko partners with Pfizer (PFE) for hGH-CTP. The company received $295 million in upfront payments from Pfizer while the regulatory milestone entailed an additional $275 million. Opko is also entitled to royalties from adult hGH-CTP sales. The recent finding reassures us that the company may go ahead with its hGH-CTP testing in adults. This is a step forward for Opko to capture the highly lucrative growth hormone market, which is expected to touch $4.7 billion by 2018.

Opko has taken another innovative approach to capturing the growth hormone market as it is also testing more efficient methods of delivering the drug. While pharma companies are keen on developing newer growth hormone therapies, there is also increased focus on developing more efficient methods of delivering them. Its latest Phase 3 trial in pediatric market involves a multi-dose pre-filled pen for delivering the drug. The company also plans to use this pen for patients who continue in the open label extension phase of the adult Phase 3 and the pediatric Phase 2 GHD studies. This approach is expected to help the company in multiple ways. First off, better methods of drug delivery will help Opko in gaining a higher market share as these new methods are expected to be easier to use. Additionally, this approach may also make the therapy more attractive vis-a-vis upcoming biosimilars, which may negatively impact the growth hormone market by offering lower priced alternatives.

While the company has a well diversified drug portfolio and robust pipeline, it is also performing well financially. The company reported its consolidated revenue for the quarter ended March 31, 2017 at $296.1 million, up from $291 million it had reported for the corresponding quarter of the previous year. It ended the quarter with $131.1 million in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities. Along with its steadily improving revenue stream, the cash balance offers a nice cushion for the company as it progresses with its trials and studies.

Another important catalyst coming up for Opko is the results related to its Rayaldee product. Rayaldee was commercially launched in the US by the end of last year. The company recently reported that Rayaldee is now accessible by 68 percent of all insured Americans. The company is counting on reaching 75 percent by the end of this year. Opko is expected to announce the revenue figures in its upcoming earnings announcement and the expected positive improvement in the outreach of the drug will likely provide yet another push to the lagging stock. The company plans to expand its sales force to promote the drug in the market.

Despite encouraging updates coming from the company, the stock's current performance is a cause of concern. At the same time, it is clear that the company has strong operational standing and thus good potential ahead. At the current price point, which is approximately 50 percent lower than its 52 weeks high of $12.15, the stock is cheaply priced, offering a good contrarian investment opportunity.
