Oil industry sees no threat from electric car

LONDON (Reuters) - The biggest oil companies in the world have calculated that few, if any, of today's drivers will see electric cars outnumber gasoline and diesel models in their lifetimes.

While politicians and green lobby groups insist the future of transport is electric, in the past two months BP and Exxon have released data which points to electric cars making up only 4-5 percent of all cars globally in 20-30 years.

Meanwhile some governments are targeting as much as a 60 percent market share for electric vehicles over a similar period.

The oil company forecasts may appear self-serving, but if they are widely accepted could provoke a policy shift that offers greater incentives for electric cars to end our addiction to oil.

And unlike more optimistic predictions from consultants like McKinsey, these forecast are backed by cash. They guide tens of billions of dollars in long-term investment in oil production and refining and it is oil that stands to lose if they get it wrong.

They don't, of course, take into account a major breakthrough in battery technology that could give electric cars a cost and performance edge over the internal combustion engine.

In its Energy Outlook for 2030, released earlier this month, BP predicted that electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, will make up only 4 percent of the global fleet of 1.6 billion commercial and passenger vehicles in 2030.

"Oil will remain the dominant transport fuel and we expect 87 percent of transport fuel in 2030 will still be petroleum based," BP Chief Executive Bob Dudley said as he unveiled the BP statistics on January 18.

The balance is seen coming from biofuels, natural gas and electricity.

Plug-in hybrids can be powered from the mains and only rely on their small gasoline engines when the battery dies.

Standard hybrids are principally driven by an internal combustion engine whose efficiency is boosted by the recycling of energy generated from braking.

Exxon Mobil, the biggest oil and gas company in the world, says the continued high cost of electric vehicles compared to petroleum cars, means take-up won't even increase much during the 2030s.

In its 2040 Energy Outlook, released in December, the Texas-based company said electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and vehicles that run on natural gas would make up only 5 percent of the fleet by 2040.

Peter Voser, Chief Executive of Royal Dutch Shell, the industry number two, sees a rosier future for electric vehicles. He predicts they will account for up to 40 percent of the worldwide car fleet, although only by 2050.

A $50 BILLION-A-YEAR OPINION

The statistics published by Exxon and BP, Europe's second-largest oil company by market value, are perhaps the most detailed long-term forecasts on electric vehicle take-up.

These Energy Outlooks guide how the oil groups allocate their annual investment budgets - among the biggest in the world, at over $50 billion combined for BP and Exxon.

The expected continued dominance of petroleum partly explains the scaling back in BP and Shell's solar, hydrogen and wind power ambitions in recent years, and Exxon's continued reluctance to get involved in renewable energy.

Insofar as the companies are active in green energy, it is mainly in the production and blending of biofuels. This is driven by U.S. and European governments' insistence that a percentage of motor fuels sold must come from plant-based sources.

If the oil companies are wrong about electric cars they will find their investments in big and expensive new oil production projects, which increasingly need crude prices around $80 per barrel to be profitable, not paying off.

The companies do see an easing in the addiction to oil, though.

Despite increased car ownership in China and India, Exxon predicts "global demand for fuel for personal vehicles will soon peak" due to an increase in average fuel efficiency.

BP expects the efficiency of combustion engines to double by 2030, with a third of vehicles on the road being hybrids.

This trend will be driven by more stringent fuel economy standards in the U.S., CO2 reduction legislation in Europe and an end to oil subsidies in developing countries.

Increased airline and commercial vehicle traffic will counterbalance some of the efficiency gains from cars but BP predicts that, helped by increased use of biofuels, demand for oil for transport overall will plateau in the mid-2020s.

GREENS FUME, POLITICIANS SEE QUICKER ADOPTION

Green groups reacted with suspicion to the oil industry forecasts.

"Exxon would say that, wouldn't they. A big take-up of electric cars is not something they would like to see," said Jos Dings, director of Brussels-based sustainable transport campaign group, Transport and Environment.

"The future for petrol and deisel doesn't look good," he countered.

Nonetheless, environmentalists like Dings fear political complacency about improving vehicle efficiency could prompt governments to ease targets to cut vehicle emissions, which could in turn delay the electrification of transport.

Big Oil's pessimistic outlook for electric cars is at odds with many governments' plans.

Electric vehicles barely register on the statistics of car sales at the moment. Nonetheless, China is targeting 5 million electric vehicles on its roads by 2020, according to media reports. This would represent around 3 percent of its predicted fleet.

The Australian government's main energy adviser, the Australian Energy Market Commission, has predicted electric vehicles will make up 20 per cent of new car sales in Australia by 2020 and 45 per cent by 2030.

The UK's Committee on Climate, which advises the government, has predicted electric vehicles will reach around 60 percent of new cars and vans by 2030. And New Zealand hopes to get to 60 percent by 2040.

The U.S. has more muted ambitions. President Barack Obama said he wants to put 1 million electric vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015, a figure that would represent less than half of one percent of the total fleet.

Many U.S. experts and officials predict a tipping point in the uptake in electric vehicles in the latter part of this decade, as technology improves, economies of scale kick in and consumer fears about being stranded when their batteries run flat, or "range anxiety", eases.

However, data compiled by the U.S. Energy Information Administration may explain the lack of an official U.S. target. Last week, the agency released an 'abridged version' of its Annual Energy Outlook 2012, due to be released in full in the Spring.

Tables used in formulating the outlook show electric vehicles and plug in hybrids are expected to account for only 1.3 percent of the U.S. fleet in 2030.

Furthermore, the agency predicts that neither consumers, nor carmakers, will get over 'range anxiety'. By 2035, the agency sees few, if any, electric vehicles on U.S. roads that can travel for 200 miles without recharging.

CARMAKER ENTHUSIASM COOLS

Many of the headlines out of autoshows in the past couple of years have been captured by the launch of electric cars such as Nissan's <7201.T> Leaf, the Tesla sports car, plug-ins like General Motors' Chevrolet Volt, and the latest incarnation of the Toyota <7203.T> Prius.

Other manufacturers including BMW , Rolls-Royce and Porsche have presented electric-powered prototypes.

On the basis of this, one could be forgiven for thinking the auto industry is betting big on electric power.

Yet few auto executives share the optimism of Renault and Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn who has repeatedly said he sees electric vehicles making up 10 percent of all sales in 2020.

A survey of 200 auto industry executives conducted by KPMG released earlier this month gave an average forecast for electric vehicles to account for 6-10 percent of global auto sales in 2025 - more bullish than Exxon and BP but hardly a revolution.

"Certainly a year ago or so, you could have gotten the impression from reading the press that everyone is driving electric cars in two years time," Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said at a roundtable at the sidelines of the Detroit auto show last month.

Zetsche said he did not see "an explosion of demand for this product".

Echoing comments from the oil companies, Gerd Kleinert, CEO of KSPG, the automotive parts business belonging to German group Rheinmetall , says take-up of electric cars will be curtailed until batteries can store energy using as little weight as gasoline does, and can be recharged as quickly as refilling a fuel tank.

"When that world exists, then we will all be driving electric cars starting tomorrow. But I personally don't see that happening, not even a hundred years from now."

Wales' Six Nations win over Ireland is marred by Bradley Davies tip tackle

Only Pearson will know why his recommendation was yellow and not red. The Wales coach, Warren Gatland, admitted immediately after the game that “Bradley was very lucky not to get sent off”. He made no attempt to defend his player thereafter.

Then, in the last minute, with Ireland desperately defending a one-point lead, Stephen Ferris bent down low and launched in to a tackle on Ian Evans and definitely lifted him momentarily off the ground, with the lock’s hips above his head although the momentum of the tackle after that was more sideways than downwards.

Nor did Ferris lose control of his opponent as he took him safely back to ground as the laws say he must. It was, however, a careless, high-risk tackle given the circumstances which left him wide open to the referee’s interpretation of the incident.

Ireland, in truth, can have few arguments about the resulting penalty which Leigh Halfpenny stroked home to win the game but the home crowd reacted angrily when Ferris received a yellow card, thus putting his tackle on a par with that of Davies in the context of the game.

The tip-tackle incidents aside, Gatland also insisted afterwards that Wales were a “bit lucky” to win but frankly he does his side a disservice.

Despite being weakened by injuries before the game and losing captain Sam Warburton to a dead leg at half-time, Wales tore into Ireland with that exhilarating brand of fearless athleticism we grew to love in the World Cup. In George North on the wing they now have a “go-to” player who will scare any defence in the world.

“I thought we were a bit lucky, we have been a bit unlucky in the past. we didn’t play as well as we can, only 80 per cent of what we are capable of doing,” said Gatland.

“But I thought we showed some great character and North was absolutely world-class on the wing. We had a big weight advantage behind the scrum and we have to make it work for us. We also showed a lot of character when we needed to.”

Wales were a runaway train in the first half and how they turned round 10-5 will remain one of rugby’s great mysteries.

In one remarkable passage of play Davies, Mike Phillips, North and Ryan Jones all went agonisingly close to scoring in short order – the latter only losing out on a video decision TMO – as Ireland defended for their lives. The gauntlet was being thrown down mentally and physically and the game would have been lost there and then for Ireland.

Having seemingly weathered the storm, Ireland will therefore be disappointed to have then conceded a try down the blindside.

In fairness, a brilliant offload by Rhys Priestland was deserving of reward and the impressive Jonathan Davies made no mistake, touching down in the corner for the first of his two tries.

Priestland, enjoying mixed fortunes, rattled the woodwork with his conversion attempt and again hit the post moments later with a relatively simple penalty attempt.

Ireland, taking encouragement, hit back with a well-worked converted try for Rory Best to add to Jonathan Sexton’s earlier penalty.

The second half saw Sexton and Halfpenny swap penalties before a staggering burst in midfield and back-of-the-hand offload from North created Jonathan Davies’s second try.

The game was in the balance when the Bradley Davies tip-tackle incident occurred and a fired-up Ireland went upfield soon after to score through Tommy Bowe which seemed to herald a home win.

But back came Wales again with North forcing his way over amid a pile of green jerseys. Halfpenny missed the conversion and still Ireland led by one point which you fancy they should have been able to defend but the drama was far from over. And the repercussions are probably just beginning.

Official: Mall walkers inspiration for health and fitness show

Participants of all ages, fitness and health levels, and exhibitors were at Arrowhead Mall on Saturday to be a part of the Be Active Health Show.

“The main inspirations behind this event are the walkers who walk around the mall every morning,” said Hope Margarit, mall marketing director.

“All kinds of people from teens, to mothers who walk with strollers to senior adults, come in at 7 a.m. and walk before work. We do a lot of healthy things at the mall, and this is just another aspect of it,” Margarit said.

The event consisted of 11 businesses from Muskogee and surrounding cities. Free fitness classes were provided by Champion Fitness, and speakers offered information about healthy living. The 11 businesses represented at the health show were Muskogee Regional Medical Center, Tahlequah City Hospital, Muskogee Swim and Fitness, Humana, Pregnancy Resource Center, Professional Home Hospice, Gaddy Drug, Cardiology Clinic of Muskogee, America Red Cross and Dillard’s hosted an American Heart Association Wear Red Fashion display.

“This is a regional mall, so we’re taking a regional approach and inviting businesses from around here,” Margarit said.

“We don’t have very many things like this around here, so it’s great that people can get out there and see what’s available to them without having to go to all the way to Tulsa,” said Susan Winters, a partaker who attended the health show.

Both Champion Fitness and the Muskogee Swim and Fitness Center were represented and were dedicated to helping area residents learn about setting and reaching fitness goals.

Champion Fitness offered free fitness classes and routine demonstrations for cardio kickboxing and step aerobics routines.

“We have fitness classes for any fitness level, and our classes are great for cardiology health, weight loss, toning, and they are great for relieving stress,” said Group Fitness Director Shannon George.

We’re here to show people how we can help them. We have a variety of different levels and instructors who are certified to help any person of any fitness level. We also have swimming lessons, water aerobics for people who may need exercise with less pressure on their joints, but still want a great cardio workout, said a representative of Muskogee Swim and Fitness.

Each business had something unique to offer, but they all had something in common. They were all there to give their support and information on all they have to offer to help serve the community.

“For us, it’s a chance to meet patients and potential patients. We get to educate the community about being healthy. We’re a regional provider, so we love to get out and meet the community that we serve. Civic involvement is a large part of what we do,” said Christina Deidesheimer, MRMC’s director of Marketing and Communications.

Becky Elliott, the infection prevention specialist at MRMC said many of the people they are seeing, they have seen at similar free events.

“They don’t have insurance and they wouldn’t have been able to get these screenings if wasn’t for this health show,” Elliott said.

Disgust strong motivator to lose weight

Reality slapped Marshall Porterfield hard when he watched a 2008 video of himself on vacation in Jamaica.

?I realized I was a lot more overweight than I thought,? Porterfield said. ?I was disappointed and embarrassed that I let myself get to that point.?

Porterfield had packed on pounds, without really realizing it, until he weighed 275. With the help of a nutrition consultant and regular exercise, he gradually lost fat and added muscle. At 5 feet, 10 inches tall, he got down to about 195 pounds, with a body-fat reading below 20 percent.

During that yearlong journey, Porterfield says the biggest lesson he learned was: ?The way you eat is more important than anything.?

Porterfield, 33, thinks he used to be like most people: He didn?t put much planning or thought into what he ate. He just ate on a whim ? whenever he felt hungry or had a craving.

?I would say that, compared to everyone around me, my peers, I ate ?normal,?? he said.

He?d drink beer several nights a week. On weekends, he?d eat chicken wings, hamburgers and pizza with his buddies.

?I didn't eat breakfast. I'd stop at a gas station, and just eat a candy bar ? or nothing,? he said.

He later learned those habits were making him fat, causing his metabolism ? the rate at which he burned calories ? to go sluggish.

Now he eats six to seven times a day and mostly plans ahead for what he?s going to eat and when.

As his new, leaner physique began to emerge, his closest friends and family confessed: ?I was getting kind of worried about you ? you were getting too overweight.?

None of them had breathed a word to him when he was at his heaviest, Porterfield said. ?I think it's kind of a taboo thing?people care about you, but just don't want to say anything,? he said.

The changes in Porterfield?s outward appearance have affected how he feels about himself and how he thinks others perceive him.

?I think you walk into a room with a little more confidence when you know you are in shape,? he said. And he thinks other people seem to have a better impression of him, too.

Porterfield said he wants to encourage others who have significant weight to lose: Don?t let the number of unwanted pounds intimidate or discourage you.

?If you just look at it like, 'I've got to lose 80 pounds,? you might feel like you can never do it,? he said. ?But for me, when I look back, I think 80 pounds ? that?s amazing ? but after I learned a new lifestyle, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be.?

Porterfield says works out about four days a week, mostly doing weight training.

He allows himself to deviate from his meal plans occasionally, mostly for holidays and other special events.

?For me, that's the way I'll be, I think, for the rest of my life,? he said.

The nutrition consultant who worked with Porterfield, David Pertuset, describes the approach he uses with clients: ?When I do an intial assessment, I don?t I don't ever tell people that it?s good or bad?I say, ?Here's our starting point; here's how long it's going to take us.??

If they balk, he says: ?I tell them it would be better for you to start right now and rectify the situation rather than get discouraged and start two to three months later and possibly have more weight to take off then.?

Pertuset, a 26-year-old from Mount Washington, said he often sees people in denial about their weight problem or making excuses as to why they cannot attack it ? until they reach the tipping point that Porterfield did.

?Disgust is one of the biggest motivators in life ? and I think he got to that point,? Pertuset said. ?I don't let people tell me that they can't do it?Ultimately you are the only person who really truly cares about your results?you are the only one who is in control of it.?
