EUGENIE JONES | Attitude must match your aspirations

A recent national health survey indicates that more than six out of every 10 Americans are overweight or obese, a number that has done nothing but continually climb in recent years. There are subsequently a growing number of people wanting to lose weight. Desire, however is not enough.

It doesn't sweat or breathe hard during workouts, but your attitude — your frame of mind — can make or break your fitness ambitions.

We, most of us, have a pretty good idea of what we want to accomplish and what it's going to take to get there. We plan to exercise and make good food choices. But often to the detriment of their "I'm-really-going-to-do-it-this-time" aspirations, they lack this key component: attitude.

Since our attitude, thoughts and feelings guide and influence our behavior, it's important to focus in on those attitudes and convictions we need to possess and to chuck the ones which do us absolutely no good.

One worthy of chucking is the ultra-fast-weight-loss pipe dream. When we attempt to correct the results of months or years of poor fitness behaviors in a few weeks, we're simply setting ourselves up to fail. Any dietary plan that promises you'll lose more than 1½-2 pounds a week is unhealthy and unrealistic. Patience, in this case, is a virtue as well as a necessity.

Second chuck-worthy attitude: "I've found this great diet!" A recent Consumer Reports magazine survey found that an overwhelming majority of 32,000 successfully dieters lost weight and kept if off, not through food deprivation or elimination, but through exercise and permanent healthy dietary habits.

In contrast, an embraceable attitude is viewing exercise as a lifelong endeavor and realizing that they're called "workouts" because they are work! If you're new to exercise, you must be mentally prepared for — not frightened off by — your body's natural response to physical exertion.

Not to say you should try to kill yourself, but know that sweating and breathing hard will not feel "easy" and will very likely feel a bit uncomfortable. But, while getting fit is not easy or effortless, with moderate, gradually progressive workouts your body will adapt and grow stronger.

Another embraceable attitude is a willingness to learn and change your behaviors. When you're willing to try new things — new cooking styles, new types of food, new forms of activity — you can accomplish new things. You cannot hold onto to old behaviors and hope to achieve a different outcome.

All in all, we know that fitness involves much more than our attitude, but it's important to realize that many crucial fitness battles are won or lost from the neck up. Get your attitude in check and the obstacles that you will undoubtedly encounter will be more easily overcome and your fitness aspirations more likely fulfilled.

Now Go Be Great!

Tim Lincecum Loses 22 Pounds After Ditching McDonald's, Starting Swimming Workouts (Videos)

by Mike Cole on Mon, Feb 6, 2012 at 9:49PM

The formula to lose weight is pretty simple. All you have to do is cut down on your calories and what you eat and work out regularly. Of course, it's never that easy, but the blueprint is pretty basic.

Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum of all people felt that he needed to slim down before returning to the Giants for spring training. After shedding 25 pounds in the offseason, it appears that Lincecum has achieved that goal.

Yahoo's Big League Stew blog has the story of how Lincecum shed the weight, just a year or so after deciding that he wanted to add weight. The two-time Cy Young winner reasoned that if he could add weight to his wiry frame, it would help add durability.

In doing so, though, Lincecum kept adding on the pounds, to the point that he realized he needed to slim down some. One of the first steps was to improve his diet -- particularly cutting fast food.

"You take your first bite of a McDonald's burger and it's like 'Why did I buy this?'" said Lincecum, who went from 197 pounds down to 175. "You feel instantly sick. That's what ended up happening with all these places and why I started eliminating them. I take a bite and I'm like 'I can't even finish this.' So I just started going for stuff that made me feel better. I'm not crushing vegetables by any means, but I'm definitely eating better."

Lincecum also said that he's dedicated himself to a swimming regimen, in which he gets a good workout by swimming against a current in a specially designed pool.

Giants fans will surely appreciate that the dominant right-hander still has the "hunger" to succeed even after recently signing a two-year, $40 million contract extension.

How to Lose Fat from Thighs and Hips | 6 simple steps! – Video

09-12-2011 14:34 tinyurl.com --- LOSE THE FAT | Lose The Fat Tips | Lose The Fat Guide! How to Lose Fat from Thighs and Hips In order to lose weight from your hips and thighs, you will need to attack the problem on two fronts: exercise and diet. Dedication is necessary as it is best to work out about five days per week and to follow your diet plan every day. 1.The most basic of exercises - walking - targets, among other areas, the hips and thighs. For the skeptics, put your hands on your hips and take a few steps - with each stride, you will be able to feel the muscles contracting. While walking at an average pace, the average person burns roughly four calories per minute, just about all of which comes from the lower body and midsection. For a faster working exercise, jogging and running use all the same muscles that are used while walking. However, keep in mind that running puts major stress on the knees. 2.There are exercises that provide similar benefits to those attained while running, but which avoid the pressure on the joints; biking, both on regular bikes and stationary bikes, as well as elliptical machines are two such means. If you have access to a pool or beach, swimming is a great full body workout that is a very popular rehab activity because of the low stress it puts on the body while still providing a great workout. Swimming uses every muscle in the body, aiding both fat loss and muscle toning. 3.An exercise you can do in your own home, squats are effective and easy to do ...

My Diet Tips – Eat This and Lose Weight Fast – Video

05-02-2012 19:27 http://www.bigimproductreviews.info http://www.bigimproductreviews.info Healthy Diet Tips for Lose Weight Fast: Get the facts on how to lose weight fast with these secret diet plan I guide to teach you. Diet Tips 1: Does Fat make you Fat? YES and NO. The right answer to this question is dependent on what type of fat we're talking about. Certain fats are actually essential for so many important bodily functions, but the wrong kind of fat can lead us down an unhealthy path to weight gain and a long list of diseases. Weight Loss Tips 2: Fat to Avoid Hydrogenated Oils You have probably already heard in the media or just about anywhere that hydrogenated oils are detrimental to your health so to avoid them at all costs. But what exactly are they? Hydrogenation is a chemical process used to make fat more shelf stable. This hydrogenation method completely alters the liquid oil's molecular structure so that it no longer resembles a natural fat. Because your body does not recognize the transformed molecule as a natural fat, it cannot process it and treats it as a toxin. This "toxin" has been linked to cancer, birth defects, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain and obesity. We must read labels! Hydrogenated oil and partially hydrogenated oil can be found in most packaged foods (margarine, crackers, chips, pretzels, cookies, cereal bars, sugar cereals, microwave popcorn, and low-fat and fat-free snacks). There are even many packaged foods advertised as "health foods" that include this toxic ...

High tech programs boost health

Technological advances in mobile technology have changed the way many people go about their daily lives.

Everything from schedule management to photography has been made easier.

Mobile applications even have been designed to change the way we monitor and manage our health.

The days of starving yourself or seeking expensive advice to try to manage weight loss and diet habits may soon be a thing of the past.

Smartphones and tablet computers — available wherever you go — now can act as health and weight monitors. They can be programmed to offer guidance and, in many cases, are wired to large networks designed to gather and filter information.

According to a recent article in The New York Times, it has taken users about two years to start using health and diet apps on a regular basis. Furthermore, numbers of users are quickly on the rise.

One of the most publicized apps — Lose It — is estimated to have been downloaded several million times by iPhone users who collectively report having lost more than 8 million pounds. The app is designed to allow users to set goals and establish daily calorie budgets. The app calculates the number of calories eaten when users enter what they have eaten.

Abilene Christian University student Rebecca Jackson uses Lose It on a regular basis and said the convenience of the app allows her to feel like she has the time to better manage her health.

"I have struggled to eat better and lose weight since high school — and I couldn't do it," Jackson said. "It is easier for me now because all I have to do is enter what I eat into the app and get a quick score of how I am doing. It is almost like a video game."

After seeing the success that independent app designers have had with weight loss and health management apps, large companies have taken notice and now are racing to get their apps in front of a vast virtual audience.

Companies such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig have released apps designed to work with or without their particular diet plan offerings that can be downloaded by anyone interested in their features.

Weight Watchers released its Weight Watchers Mobile app in 2011 with a robust list of advanced features. Users can track the number of points that they have accumulated based on what they have eaten by entering single food items or full recipes. The app can also gather information about a particular food item when the item's bar code is scanned with the camera of a mobile device. Personal advice and diet counseling are offered to users who also use the company's paid diet services.

Jenny Craig offers a more basic app that mimics what a number of other diet-related apps are designed to do. The app is preprogrammed with the menus and nutritional information of more than 150 nationally recognized restaurant chains. Users simply enter what they eat — or plan to eat at these restaurants — into the app to calculate a calorie count.

More information about heath and diet related apps, including user ratings and testimonials, can be found in either the Apple App Store or in Google's Android Market.

Fitness and "fatness" both matter to the heart

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Losing fitness or packing on fat with age each can be bad for the heart -- but avoiding either one of those fates may protect the ticker, a study published Monday suggests.

U.S. researchers found that of more than 3,100 healthy adults they followed, those who improved -- or simply maintained -- their fitness levels were less likely to develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol or other well-established heart disease risk factors.

Similarly, people who maintained their weight had fewer of those red flags than people who became heavier over time.

That may sound logical, but part of what's new in the findings, researchers say, is that changes in fitness and "fatness" each appeared important on their own.

In general, people who kept their fitness levels over time seemed to counter some of the ill effects of weight gain. And dips in fitness levels weren't as bad if a person lost some excess body fat.

The results suggest that protecting heart health is not as hard as some people think, according to lead researcher Duck-chul Lee, of the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

That is, just maintaining your weight and fitness levels as you age may be enough to see benefits.

"If you're overweight, losing weight and improving your fitness may be the best combination," Lee told Reuters Health. "But that's very challenging."

For many people, "maintenance" may be more achievable, Lee said.

The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, included 3,148 men and women in the Dallas area who were in their early 40s, on average, at the outset.

Over six years, they developed high blood pressure at a rate of four percent each year, high cholesterol at a rate of three percent per year and so-called metabolic syndrome at a rate of two percent per year. (Metabolic syndrome refers to a collection of risk factors for heart disease -- including high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, abdominal obesity and high blood sugar.)

But people who kept up or improved their fitness levels -- as measured during treadmill tests -- had lower odds of developing those heart risk factors.

Their risks of high blood pressure or high cholesterol were 26 percent to 30 percent lower, versus people whose fitness levels declined. And their risk of metabolic syndrome was 42 percent to 52 percent lower.

Similarly, when people increased their percentage of body fat over time, they were more likely to develop heart risk factors.

For each one percent increase in body fat, the odds of those risk factors climbed anywhere from three percent to eight percent.

But in general, people who gained weight stayed healthier if they kept up their fitness levels. And if overweight people shed some fat, they countered some of the negative effects of waning fitness.

The bottom line, according to Lee, is that people who are active should stay active. Even if you don't see a benefit on your bathroom scale, you'll stay fit.

"If you're already exercising, keep it up, and maybe increase the intensity if you can," Lee said.

If you're sedentary but healthy, he said, you can safely take up moderate exercise like brisk walking. Lee added, though, that people who are obese or have chronic health conditions should talk to their doctors first.

"It's the sedentary people who will get the most benefit from exercise in a short time," Lee said.

He was, however, referring to the benefit of improved fitness. Overweight people often fail to see the pounds fly off when they first start exercising -- possibly because they are hungrier and start eating more.

Don't get discouraged by that, Lee said. You can improve your cardiovascular fitness even without shedding the extra body fat. One way to tell if your fitness is improving, Lee said, is to simply notice how you feel when you go about your normal exercise routine; if it's getting easier, you're getting fitter.

To actually lose weight, diet changes are needed as well.

"Most people will lose weight with exercise," Lee said, "if they also pay attention to the calories they're taking in."

Diet Coke® and Minka Kelly Celebrate The Heart Truth® With Lucky Fans

ATLANTA, Feb. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- "Showing a little heart" never goes out of style. That's why actress Minka Kelly and iconic fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg are teaming up with Diet Coke and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) The Heart Truth® campaign. The goal: to raise awareness of women's heart health educational programs. Five lucky Diet Coke fans will join these women for the star-studded Red Dress Collection Fashion Show on February 8, which kicks-off New York Fashion Week.

To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, please visit: http://www.multivu.com/mnr/54306-diet-coke-red-dress-collection-fashion-show-the-heart-truth-minka-kelly

This year marks the fifth year Diet Coke will play an active role in The Heart Truth® campaign. Diet Coke is taking its efforts online, on packaging and on the runway to call attention to women's heart health educational programs. Minka Kelly will join Diet Coke and walk the Red Dress runway in a custom Diane von Furstenberg dress.

Diet Coke fans walked their own virtual runway by using their social networks to "show their hearts" for the cause and entering to win a chance to attend the annual Red Dress Collection Fashion Show. Using the hashtag "#ShowYourHeart," people shared photos of themselves wearing red via Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. The entries were judged, and the five best photos were selected. Minka Kelly then judged the five winning photos to choose one grand prize winner, who received a shopping spree with a style expert. All five winners will be attending this week's event.

"I loved the creativity the winners showed in their photos, and now I can't wait to show off Ms. von Furstenberg's creation and raise awareness at the Red Dress Collection Fashion Show," said Minka Kelly. "Heart health is important for women of every age, and it's up to each of us to help spread the word to the women we love."

In addition to the dress Minka Kelly will be wearing in the Fashion Show, Diane von Furstenberg created a limited-edition collection of Diet Coke aluminum bottles featuring her iconic prints. The bottles will be sold in select Diane von Furstenberg stores in New York and on DVF.com during the month of February. Proceeds from the bottle sales will benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), in support of The Heart Truth® and women's heart health research and educational programs.

The Heart Truth® supporters can also help raise funds for the cause by "donating a tweet." For each person who re-tweets Diet Coke's The Heart Truth® post on February 8, Diet Coke will donate $1 to the FNIH, up to $100,000.

Throughout the month of February, Diet Coke drinkers also will be treated to special packaging featuring the now familiar stick figure painting a large, red heart. Additionally, more than six billion packages of Diet Coke will feature The Heart Truth® logo throughout the year.

"For five years, Diet Coke has been a passionate supporter of The Heart Truth® and its efforts to raise awareness about the importance of heart health," said William White, Brand Director, Diet Coke North America. "While we've shared this vital message with millions of people through our partnership with the NHLBI, we'll reach even more this year with creative online programs, in-store activations and eye-catching packaging."

Through successful heart health educational programs and with the support of scores of people dedicated to the cause, including Diet Coke fans, awareness of heart disease among women has nearly doubled in the last 12 years. More than half (54%) of women recognize that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, up from 30 percent in 1997.*

Promotions and Advertising

Diet Coke is activating national heart health programs with key retail and restaurant customers across the nation, including SUBWAY® Restaurants. Together with Diet Coke, SUBWAY® will donate $50,000 toward heart health education and research programs. SUBWAY® fans can also help trigger an additional $50,000 for the cause. For every fan who uploads their own photo using the hashtag "#SUBWAYHeartTruth" from now until February 29, a $1 donation will be made to the FNIH, up to $50,000. The SUBWAY® restaurant chain, is ranked "number one" by consumers in the Zagat® Fast Food Survey in the "Healthy Options" category and their FRESH FIT® menu options include sandwiches and salads containing 6 grams of fat or less and "better for you" sides and drinks, such as yogurt, apple slices, low-fat milk, bottled water and sparkling beverages.

The Heart Truth® is also supported by advertising and digital initiatives. Diet Coke's support of The Heart Truth® is another expression of Coca-Cola's Live Positively commitment to encourage active, healthy lifestyles in the lives of people and communities.
