Fitness Challenge enourages students to attend group classes

The Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness is holding its second November Fitness Challenge.

Students are encouraged to attend as many group fitness classes as possible this month. Prizes, which have not yet been decided, will be distributed to the top four performers.

Our hope is that November Fitness challenge will get people to try new classes and come to classes more often, said Sara Coleman, a fitness assistant and class instructor.

The incentive is to get people into the habit of attending classes, Coleman said. Group fitness classes are about helping people reach their goal, she said.

Having an instructor and a group fitness class presents you with new ideas, Coleman said. And going to a class gives you a whole new workout.

The challenge is held in November because participation in classes drops drastically between October and November, Coleman said. Participation in classes is tracked weekly and monthly, she said.

Seth Hickerson, assistant director of programs, said that November Fitness Challenge was a good opportunity for people to experience the different classes the Weinstein Center has to offer. The gym staff would like to see people becoming regulars and sticking with the classes, he said.

Hickerson said he would have liked to see an increase in student participation in fitness classes because it was important for people to take care of themselves, especially during the holiday season when eating and exercise habits might change for the worse.

Theres a social aspect to group fitness classes, Hickerson said. Its fun to work out with friends or staff that may share a similar goal with you.

No class registration or commitment is required, Hickerson said.

Alpine Health & Fitness Finalists in the NZ Fitness Industry Awards

Alpine Health & Fitness have recently received notification of their being a finalist in the New Zealand Fitness Industry Awards. The Queenstown health and fitness centre is entered in the Medium Sized Club of The Year category.

The Fitness Industry Awards have been running since 2005, and are designed to recognise those making a contribution to the health and wellness of New Zealanders through exercise and fitness.

Alpine Health & Fitness Manager, Richie Heap, said is extremely gratifying to receive industry recognition for the work his team at Alpine Health & Fitness are doing, particularly having only been in operation for three years.

We are first and foremost a community gym and these awards are not all about the gloss and glamour but about acknowledging facilities that are making a significant contribution to helping people in New Zealand improve their fitness and wellbeing. We all work really hard to help people reach their goals and that includes encouraging people in our community that would not traditionally be gym users to get into one of our programmes.

The awards ceremony is an annual event, and has had prestigious guest speakers including MPs and Ministers Hon John Key, Hon Rodney Hide, Hon Murray McCull, Sue Kedgeley and Auckland Mayor Len Brown.

The 2012 Awards will be held on Saturday 24th November 2012 at the Pullman Hotel, Auckland where the winners will be announced.

Latest fitness trends: Suspension training

Remember; please consult your doctor before starting any exercise program.

The fitness industry is constantly changing and advancing, partly due to the scientific research studies that yield continuous new developments, but also due to industry leaders that set new trends based on science as well.

Some of the most recent ones have been core training, barefoot training, and functional training, but lately one of the hottest over the past few years has been suspension training.

Although the concept has been around for a long time (used mainly by gymnasts), currently its been adapted by fitness trainers and enthusiasts, and can be appropriate for almost anyone. Suspension training involves straps hanging from a single (or multiple) anchor point and uses your own bodyweight as the resistance. TRX is probably the most well known type of suspension training today, and is becoming much more visible in fitness centers all over the country in both individual and group settings.

After completing the TRX training course this past weekend, I now have a much greater appreciation for my own bodyweight and the many benefits to a piece of fitness equipment like the TRX. Heres a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of suspension workouts.

Benefits All core, all the time: This phrase was brought up repeatedly throughout the workshop. Your center of gravity is displaced throughout each exercise so that your core musculature is constantly engaged and working hard to assist with stabilization and balance.

Adaptable: Its simple to make any exercise harder or easier through small changes in your body position relative to the anchor point or by changing your base of stability. This makes it a great tool for both beginners and for the more advanced athlete at any age.

Trains movement patterns: Because the core is involved to such a great degree in most of the exercises, and you can train in multiple planes of motion, suspension training can be an extremely functional training tool for everyday life or for specific sports. We move everyday in these three different planes, and rarely use muscles in isolation, so suspension training really allows you to integrate many muscle groups at once and allows for hundreds of different exercises and variations. It incorporates strength, balance, stabilization, and flexibility all at once giving you a lot of bang for your buck.

It is solid, durable, sturdy, stable and safe - all things I was looking for in a treadmill to run on a few times a week. I got my treadmill about a month ago and was impressed from the start - free shipping, delivery within a week, and simple assembly in less than an hour. The treadmill is very heavy, so I recruited a couple friends to give me a hand moving it downstairs. It does fold up and move around quite easy as it has wheels on the frame when you tilt the treadmill back. My TR3000 treadmill is very stable and feels solid when I run, and is very quiet and smooth even when running at the 6-8 mph speeds. The console shows me all the information I need at once. The exercise programs are great for variety and motivation. I also use the manual program on the treadmill and adjust the speed and incline as I workout. I would recommend a LifeSpan TR3000 treadmill to anyone seeking a good solid treadmill for running or walking." "I use my treadmill 4-5 days a week for 30-40 minutes and I love it. I am training for my first half marathon and have set the User program to do my interval training, I don #39;t use the other programs so I can #39;t add any comments on those. It is very quiet at the 6-8 mph range as well as during my warm up and cool ...From:nannette erwinViews:0 0ratingsTime:00:54More inSports
