Obesity and overweight is a preventable condition that can be overcome by alterations done to the lifestyle. According to the study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition called Joint associations of adiposity and alcohol consumption with liver disease-related morbidity and mortality risk: findings from the UK Biobank, it was found that overweight and obese people are more vulnerable to adverse effects of alcohol on the liver as compared to people who are not.

Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, senior author and research program director, Charles Perkins Centre and the Faculty of Medicine and Health said, People in the overweight or obese range who drank were found to be at greater risk of liver diseases compared with participants within a healthy weight range who consumed alcohol at the same level.

Even for people who drank within alcohol guidelines, participants classified as obese were at over 50 per cent greater risk of liver disease."

Dr Elif Inan-Eroglu, lead author of the study and postdoctoral research fellow with the Charles Perkins Centre said, "With the most recent data suggesting two in three people - or 67 per cent of the Australian population are in the overweight or obesity range, this is obviously a very topical issue."

When compared to normal-weight individuals who consumed alcohol at the same amount, people with overweight or obesity who drank within or beyond alcohol recommendations had a 50 per cent higher chance of developing liver disease.
