Dublin woman shares how she lost 3st – and continued to lose weight during lockdown – RSVP Live

A Dublin woman has shared how she lost 3st and feels more confident than ever after making some changes to her lifestyle.

Jules Grimes, 36, said she tried lots of different diets in an effort to shed the extra weight she was carrying, but nothing worked long-term.

I lost a serious amount of weight before I got married, but within a year of the wedding I had piled it all back on again, she told RSVP.

I went on holidays with my friends in 2016, and I just look bloated and unhappy in the photos.

My mam had joined Slimming World and she was looking amazing and eating lots of lovely food. So I said if she could do it, I could do it too.

Jules joined a Slimming World group in Carraroe, Sligo, in January 2017, and said she felt shocked when she saw the number on the scales.

I saw I was over 14st, that was a pretty low day for me, she said.

The consultant, Charlotte, asked me what my target weight loss was. I remembered someone saying to me Youll never be as thin as the day you got married.

And I knew that was it, I was going to lose the three stone I put on since the wedding.

With the support of Charlotte and everyone in her group, Jules began losing the weight little by little.

It seemed like such a massive mountain to climb at first but I just took it a half stone at a time, she said.

Within a year and a half, she had reached her target and slimmed down from a size 14-16 to a size 10.

She said that she had actually thought she ate well before she joined the group, but she didnt realise how many high fat, high sugar foods she was consuming.

Its when I actually took a step back and looked at how much cheese and bread I was eating that I realised you have to be aware of that. Now I would weigh and measure those foods, you can pull back on them but still enjoy them as well fish and beans and other lovely food.

I would have relied on quick fixes, buying ready-made lunches, take away on the weekends. Out of convenience, I was eating a lot of high sugar, high fat foods.

With Slimming World, youre changing how you cook, how you shop and how you eat. So I started cooking from scratch, and I realised I actually really enjoy it.

She added: The plan is also handy because I can adapt it to my needs as a vegetarian, and its all food that my husband will eat as well so I dont have to cook one meal for myself and one meal for him!

Jules has seen a boost to her confidence in many ways, from feeling more self-assured at work to experimenting with fashion.

Before my weight loss I would have worn a lot of dark clothes and elasticated waistbands, she said.

Now I would wear more colour, Im excited for my online shopping to arrive rather than panicking over whether it will fit.

Im more outgoing, I feel more confident in meetings at work, standing up and giving presentations.

Jules also became a Slimming World consultant a year ago, something she said she never would have dreamed of doing before.

I love helping other people lose weight and seeing their confidence build too, she said.

With the lockdown especially, everyone felt a bit helpless. It was great to be able to keep up the virtual groups to have that focus and share tips and advice.

"In the first week of lockdown, it felt almost like Christmas without the presents, like no-one was watching. I did go off plan but as soon as Charlotte's virtual group started up again I was back on track.

I know that if I hadnt been able to do that, I would definitely have eaten more, and then felt bad about myself, and then eaten more because I felt bad about myself. Its a vicious cycle.

"I've actually lost weight during lockdown, not a lot but I lost the few pounds I put on and I've been chipping away."

Sharing her top weight loss tips, she said: Eat often but eat healthy stuff.

In the morning I might have loads of fruit and yoghurt, my lunch could be some homemade soup, or leftovers from my dinner the night before.

During the day, Id always be snacking on fruit, berries, low Syn foods. If youre hungry, youre going to pick at things.

At night time, Id make sure I had room for a meringue nest with some yoghurt and berries, or a low calorie jelly.

I always make sure that I have a good shop in, and I make sure that I have interesting things in the house that I want to eat, but that arent going to do too much damage if I go mad on them.
