Matthew Mcconaughey embarked on a 10-day fast in preparation for his new role in The Dark Tower after packing on the pounds for his last project, Gold. The Dallas Buyers Club star gained 47 pounds (21.3 kilograms) dining on pizza, burgers, and beer to get into character as chain-smoking Kenny Wells in the 2016 crime drama, but he had to lose all of the extra weight for his next role in The Dark Tower.McConaughey reveals slimming down to portray the villain, a demonic sorcerer named The Man in Black, was tough at first, as he had to overhaul the lazy habits he had picked up for Gold.Explaining how he tackled the big diet change, he told U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America, (I) started off with a 10-day fast to kick-start losing all the fat that I had on myself on Gold. And mind you, putting on 47 (pounds) was more fun than losing (the weight)Then I slowly started to move around, and take the stairs to the second floor, which I didnt do when I was doing Gold, and then just started working out.Matthew admits seeing his belly shrink and turn to muscle during the lead-up to The Dark Tower was a huge relief, as at 47, hes well aware of how much of a struggle it can be to get into shape.(I) was happy to know, hey, guess what? The old body remembered where it could go, and lets get back to 185 (pounds) and good shape (sic), he smiled. The Dark Tower, based on Stephen Kings book series of the same name, also stars Idris Elba as the gun-slinging hero Roland Deschain, and hits theatres this week (begs31Jul17).
