Drinking Coke and Pepsi may increase testicle size and testosterone production, study says – The Independent

A study has suggested that soda consumption may increase testosterone levels and testicle size in men.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Northwest Minzu University in China and published in the scientific journal Acta Endocrinol, set out to determine the impact carbonated beverages such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi had on fertility.

As noted by the study authors, previous studies have linked soda consumption to harm to reproductive functions, reduced sperm quantity and reduced sperm motility.

The researchers, who relied on animal testing to conduct the study, found the opposite was true when it came to testosterone, the male hormone produced mainly in the testes, and testicle size.

To test their hypothesis, the researchers studied groups of male mice. The first group drank only water, while the remaining groups drank varying levels of Coca-Cola and Pepsi, respectively.

Over the 15-day period, the scientists performed tests on the mice to analyse the effects of the carbonated beverage consumption, which included blood tests and weight and diameter measurements of the testis.

The study found that the testes of the mice that just drank Pepsi or Coca-Cola were significantly increased on day 15.

The outcome demonstrated a high dose of Pepsi or Coca-Cola could promote testis growth and development, the study authors wrote.

In addition to increased testicle size, researchers also found that the concentrations of serum testosterone in all mice were enhanced after the Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola treatment, which indicated that high doses of Pepsi and Coca-Cola could improve testosterone secretion of male mice.

In conclusion, drinking Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola could promote testis development, enhance testosterone secretion, increase serum EGF concentrations . Our findings provided the scientific basis for fully understanding [carbonated beverages] effects and their mechanism on development and reproduction functions of humans, but also benefit to prevent prostate dysfunction and cancer, the study authors wrote.

Although the study suggested that males may experience increased testicle size and testosterone production as a result of soda consumption, the researchers reiterated that the findings contradict previous studies. One such previous study includes a survey of 2,500 men that suggested sperm quantity was reduced by 30 per cent when a one-litre carbonated beverage was consumed every day.

The researchers also noted that previous studies have suggested links between soda consumption and fertility. One study found that carbonated beverages are associated with alterations in hormones that affect ovulation.

The researchers claimed that, so far, there has been little documentation regarding correlation between carbonated beverage consumption and reproduction function and fertility in humans and animals.

Although the researchers said more research needs to be conducted on the link between soda and fertility, the study acknowledges that carbonated beverage consumption may lead to obesity, cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes, and that previous studies have indicated health damage effects of carbonated beverages on adolescents and children were serious.

The recent study comes after a previous study found that massive consumption of coffee or caffeine increased testosterone production.

As for whether you should consume soda, health experts recommend against consuming the beverages due to the sugar content.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, one can of soda can have as much as 39 grams of sugar, while the American Heart Association recommends no more than 25 grams of sugar per day for women and 36 grams of sugar per day for men.

What are the symptoms of low testosterone? – Norton Healthcare

Testosterone is a hormone produced by testicles in people assigned male at birth. Testosterone can affect many aspects of life, including appearance, sexual development and sex drive (libido). It also helps build bone and muscle mass. A small amount of testosterone is also produced in people assigned female at birth, however this article focuses on low testosterone in males.

Although low testosterone can affect anyone with testicles at any age, low testosterone is more common as people age. Its important to know that it is natural for testosterone production typically to decrease with age. The Endocrine Society considers low blood testosterone to be a morning level of less than 300 nanograms per deciliter in adults. Testosterone levels vary throughout the day, so testing these levels at 8 a.m. is very important.

The symptoms of low testosterone, also known as low T or male hypogonadism, vary based on age and other factors, said Lisal J. Folsom, M.D., adult and pediatric endocrinologist with Norton Community Medical Associates Endocrinology and Norton Childrens Endocrinology, affiliated with University of Louisville School of Medicine. Sometimes when people have symptoms that may signal low testosterone, testing shows normal testosterone levels. That suggests the symptoms are related to something else entirely.

Norton Community Medical Associates Endocrinology offers care for low testosterone at five locations within Greater Louisville. Our fellowship-trained and board-certified endocrinologists provide a comprehensive and inclusive approach.

Testosterone replacement therapy is considered when testosterone is truly low, Dr. Folsom said. Before beginning treatment its very important to have a thorough evaluation, as many symptoms of low testosterone can overlap with other causes, and treatment with any medication can have risks as well as benefits.

If your health care provider recommends testosterone replacement therapy, there are several treatment options, including:

5 Best Testosterone Replacement Therapy Services 2023 – Men’s Health

Welcome to Testosterone HQMen's Health's guide to the exciting, complicated, and revolutionary world of testosterone. For everything you need to know about T, click here.

TOPICAL TREATMENTS FOR hair loss. Gummy multivitamins. Generic formulations of Viagra. The online market for mens wellness is booming. And in the last couple years, that includes testosterone, which is easier to get than ever before.

Critical for regulating the male sex drive, testosterone plays a number of other key functions in the body. Its required for generating sperm. It helps to increase muscle mass, distribute body fat, and generate red blood cells. For men lacking in testosterone, the symptoms can be debilitating. Severe fatigue and depression. Irritability. No sex drive, brain fog, and anemia. Low-T guys have a harder time putting on muscle, and generally see more fat around their abdomen.

Testosterone levels, which are measured in nanograms per deciliter of blood, naturally wane as we age. The conventional wisdom, as spelled out by the American Urological Association, is that a healthy level is higher than 300 ng/dL; some experts argue that low is a little lower and starts at 264 ng/dL. Either way, doctors who specialize in hormone therapies say they are seeing a glut of guys whose testosterone levels are above 300 and are dealing with all the symptoms associated with a clinical diagnosis of testosterone deficiency.

Various boutique health companies, in response, now offer a spectrum of testosterone therapies, which have been extolled by the likes of Joe Rogan and Sylvester Stallone. There are straight-up replacement therapiesTRT, as its calledthat replenish levels of the hormone via creams, gels, pellets, or injections of either the subcutaneous or intramuscular kind. Tablets and supplements, intended to optimize the testosterone a guys already got, are also increasingly available. And forget in-person visits: The wellness businesses of today sell products that are shipped directly to consumers.

Administering testosterone is not like popping a multivitamin, to be sure. Replacing testosterone exogenously shuts down the bodys own production, which means you have to stay on it to maintain any positive effects. Younger guys should also consider their own fertility, since TRT can hinder or stop sperm production. And there are certainly ways to naturally keep your own testosterone levels at their peak: proper exercise, a good diet, and sufficient sleep are all good places to start. But many men with low or lower-than-average levels notice that their moods, muscles, and movesin the gym and in the bedroomare all improved by boosting or optimizing their T.

We recognize, though, that sifting through the options out there can be a bit daunting. What you need and where to get it are important questions. To say nothing of if you need testosterone therapy at all. So consider this your what-to-know-before-you-go shopping guide to online testosterone therapy.

Roman is a wellness company known for its array of services and its simplicitythat is, ease of use. Part of the reason is how Roman gets you going: a DIY blood test shipped to your home. The kit comes with all the materials required for finger-prick draws on two consecutive days. A smartphone app guides you step-by-step through the draws. The kit also comes with pre-printed postage so you can mail it back for analysis, which is completed in a week.

The other part? Roman has only two offerings. One is a supplement billed as testosterone support for guys with healthy levels. It contains ingredients common in multivitamins, as well as ashwagandha, a plant that has been shown, in some studies, to modestly increase your bodys natural testosterone levels.

Clomiphene citrate is the other, although its better known by its brand name, Clomid. Assume your blood test comes back showing low or lower-than-average T. A call with a doctor or nurse practitioner follows, and theyll help you decide your dosage of Clomid (if signs point to that drug being right for you in the first place, of course). The drug itself is not testosterone replacement at all. Rather, Clomid is a pill that stimulates more natural testosterone production, which it does by blocking estrogen receptors in the brain. (When that happens, the pituitary gland boosts production of luteinizing hormone, which acts on the Leydig cells in the testes to make more testosterone endogenously.)

Clomids main advantage is fewer of the side effects associated with traditional testosterone replacement, which can include testicular shrinkage and, in some cases, infertility. Our approach really has to do with maximizing the interaction between safety and efficacy, says Tzvi Doron, D.O., Romans chief clinical officer.

Costs:

Maximus caters to all men looking to optimize their testosterone, but its an appealing option for young guys who want to maintain their fertility but also need a boost in T.

Founded by clinical psychologist Cameron Sepah, Maximus doesnt offer testosterone replacement therapy at all. He calls it testosterone stimulation rather than replacement. (And his personal view is that TRT should be a last resort.) The company prescribes custom compounds of pure enclomiphene, one of Clomids two ingredients. Sepah says the reason for this is that Clomids other ingredient, zuclomiphene, can have estrogenic side effects. His sales pitch is pretty easy to boil down: The enclomiphene will quickly help your body generate more natural testosterone, minus the side effects that sometimes accompany replenishing with synthetic testosterone or popping Clomid.

Of the options here, Maximus is the quickest way to get going on testosterone optimization. You start with a quantitative ADAM, a series of questions on symptoms associated with low testosterone. Within 24 hours, a doctor makes an eligibility decision, and initiates a blood test thats shipped to consumersin this case, a shoulder-mounted device that uses microneedles to remove about a pinky-tips worth of blood. Within a week of shipping your blood sample back, youll have your first bottle of enclomiphene, if you qualify. A follow-up blood test after 30 days determines if your dosage needs any tinkering.

All Maximus patients are assigned a physician; all communication is done asynchronously through text and email. The company also provides health coaching to help guys optimize their diet, exercise, sleep schedules, and stress levels.

Our philosophy is that pharmacology and behavior change are synergistic, says Sepah. One of the biggest benefits of testosterone is increased motivation. We find it helps people make the behavior changes.

Costs:

If youre unclear about whether testosterone therapy is right for you, try Hone Health. According to Jack Jeng, M.D., Hones chief medical officer, the company only accepts patients with lower-than-normal testosterone levels. For guys who are borderline, Hones clinicians might suggest lifestyle changes (sleep, exercise, diet) for three months before jumping into a prescription.

We turn away a lot of patients, Dr. Jeng says. You have to make sure the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks.

You start with a blood test, usually self-administered at home via finger prick, to check biomarkers such as your levels of testosterone and estrogen. A 30-minute telehealth visit follows, and if the doctor deems you a good candidate for testosterone therapy, a second blood test is ordered to confirm the first reading. Within a few weeks, you could be on testosterone replacement, delivered at home in the form of creams, injections, or troches, depending on your preference.

If replacement isnt warranted, Hone can instead send Clomid. Unique to Hone is anastrozole, an inhibitor that blocks the conversion of testosterone to estrogenthat conversion can happen when aromatase, an enzyme contained in fat cells, breaks down testosterone. Whatever the case, patients receive follow-up blood tests and telehealth visits every three months in the first year to check for side effects and titrate dosages if necessary.

Give it at least 10 weeks before deciding whether or not this is working for you, says Dr. Jeng. Thats around the time when people start to notice that the benefits have started to really kick in.

Costs:

Blokes is for anyone who wants doctors controlling their testosterone therapy from start to finish. Every interaction with Blokes begins with a blood test, but these arent self-administered. Instead, Blokes schedules an appointment at a Labcorp or Quest Diagnostics facility. (For a surcharge, a phlebotomist can meet you at your home or workplace.)

These tests are the more conventional CBC, or complete blood count. Testosterone and estrogen levels are assessed, and so are your levels of luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormonesthe pituitary hormones responsible for testosterone and sperm production, respectivelyas well as your cholesterol and lipids. A one-on-one clinical visit of at least 30 minutes then follows.

You want to know who that patient is before you start prescribing anything, says Amy Killen, M.D., one of Blokes clinicians. You dont want to throw this stuff out like candy.

Once youre in the Blokes system, youre assigned a physician and health coach who guide your therapy and make recommendations on nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle factors. Testosterone replacement options include creams, injections, and troches, as well as nasal sprays and pellets (inserted into the body via a minor procedure). Clomid is on hand, too, as is pure enclomiphene. After 30 days: another blood test, along with another telehealth appointment. Its usually at this mark that Blokes consults with you to figure out if youre on the right form of testosterone therapy or drug.

We prioritize service over automation, says founder Josh Whalen. Every patient is getting some type of one-on-one follow-up with a provider.

Costs:

If youre as interested in health span and longevity medicine as you are in testosterone, then Opt Health is for you. Graham Simpson, M.D., one of the cofounders, has himself been on testosterone therapy for 27 years; hes 72, but doesnt look much older than 50.

Opt Health starts its prospective patients with a blood draw like all the other companies. These are done at a local Labcorp (or at home, with a visit from a nurse or phlebotomist). The blood test triggers an initial consultation, at which point Simpson, his cofounder Jeremie Walker, M.D., or one of Opts other half-dozen clinicians can take you through their testosterone options, which include creams, injections, and Clomid that are shipped directly in three-month allotments. Chances are that any testosterone treatment you end up taking will be paired with Opts offerings of amino-acid peptides or nutraceuticals.

Testosterone is a big part of our business, says Dr. Walker. But I actually have guys that are not on testosterone. Were focused on lifestyle optimizations.

Every three to four months, Opt Health repeats a blood draw followed by a consult with your clinician. A personalized online dashboard helps you track your progress, side effects, symptoms, and something Dr. Simpson calls your DNA age. (Theres your chronological ageyour birthdayand your biological age, he says.) In Opts view, fighting insulin resistance and inflammation is just as important to Opt as prescribing the right form of testosterone treatment.

Were very focused on reversing biological age, Dr. Simpson says. We look at nutrition, we look at exercise, we look at hormones, we look at stress, we look at sleep. We look at many, many things that optimize mens health.

Testosterone replacement therapy combined with lifestyle modification may contribute to improved metabolic and glucose profiles for men with hypogonadism and prediabetes, according to a review article.

In findings published in Andrology, Giovanni Corona, MD, PhD, an endocrinologist and andrologist at Maggiore-Bellaria Hospital in Bologna, Italy, and colleagues reviewed data from multiple studies and meta-analyses on the role testosterone plays in the development of diabetes. The researchers found people with impaired fasting glucose tended to have lower total and free testosterone levels than controls, and testosterone replacement may improve body composition and insulin resistance. However, they concluded more research is needed to analyze whether testosterone replacement can help men lose weight or prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.

Experimental and clinical evidence clearly indicates that metabolic derangements even in preclinical stages are characterized by significantly lower testosterone circulating levels, the researchers wrote. In the latter circumstances, testosterone replacement therapy can improve body composition, metabolic profiles and insulin resistance, whereas the data on body weight are more conflicting.

Researchers conducted a systematic review using studies and meta-analyses available in the Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases from 1969 to April 2022. Meta-analyses were preferred over individual studies. Searchers were conducted for papers analyzing the relationships between testosterone, diabetes and prediabetes. Researchers also analyzed data from a study of 4,682 patients who received care for sexual dysfunction at the University of Florence.

In the cohort with low testosterone from the University of Florence, 16.9% had IFG. Among men with IFG, the prevalence of secondary hypogonadism was two times higher than the prevalence observed in the general population. After adjusting for age, BMI and waist circumference were the best predictors for IFG-related low testosterone. Researchers also analyzed findings from eight similar studies, of which 3,625 participants had IFG and 6,205 had normal glucose. Men with IFG had a 3 nmol/L lower total testosterone and a 1.8 times higher risk for hypogonadism compared with controls. Waist circumference and BMI were again the strongest predictors for low testosterone.

Researchers found three meta-analyses investigating the effects of low testosterone among men with type 2 diabetes. Men with type 2 diabetes had lower total and free testosterone than controls without diabetes. Additionally, men who developed type 2 diabetes during follow-up had lower total testosterone at baseline than those who never developed diabetes.

Researchers found two studies evaluating the use of testosterone replacement in people with hypogonadism and prediabetes. In an open-label observational study, 90% of men with low testosterone and prediabetes treated with injectable testosterone undecanoate (Nebido, Grnenthal) for up to 8 years achieved an HbA1c of less than 5.7% at follow-up. Those receiving testosterone replacement also had greater improvements in body composition, lipid profile and fasting glucose compared with controls. In a randomized controlled trial where men with low testosterone and prediabetes were randomly assigned to an intramuscular injection of testosterone undecanoate or placebo, participants in the testosterone group had greater improvements in fat mass, lean mass and waist circumference, but not body weight, compared with controls. Testosterone replacement was also associated with a greater reduction in fasting glucose, but not HbA1c.

Researchers analyzed data from four meta-analyses investigating the effect of testosterone replacement in people with type 2 diabetes. Testosterone replacement was associated with greater improvements in fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin and insulin resistance compared with placebo. However, data between the meta-analyses were conflicting for body composition. None of the meta-analyses found a change in BMI with testosterone replacement and only one found testosterone replacement reduced fat mass. For lipids, all of the meta-analyses found an improvement in triglycerides for men receiving testosterone compared with placebo, but findings varied for all remaining lipid parameters.

It is our opinion that the combined approach of testosterone replacement therapy and lifestyle changes should be used in symptomatic hypogonadal men to better motivate patients to perform physical activity eventually resulting in weight loss and sexual function improvement, the researchers wrote. Whether or not these approaches can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes from preclinical conditions require more longitudinal well-performed studies.

How Sleep Affects Your Testosterone Levels, According to Doctors – Men’s Health

LIKE MOST PEOPLE, you probably dont get enough sleep. You might constantly wake up groggy or struggle to get through the day without a nap. This constant lack of rest could cause a number of health consequences, including lowering your testosterone levels.

Testosterone is the male sex hormone needed to help regulate many different processes in the body, including libido, bone and muscle mass, erectile functioning, and red blood cell production, says John Lynam, D.O., an American Osteopathic Association board-certified urologist.

Many factors can affect your testosterone levels, especially age and weight, Dr. Lynam says. When your testosterone is too low, you can experience a range of symptoms, including fatigue, depressed mood, erectile dysfunction, and reduced muscle mass.

Sleep affects testosterone, too. Not getting enough might decrease testosterone levels, but its likely not the only cause of that drop in T. A lack of sleep can also worsen other health conditions that might affect testosterone.

Sleep disorders including a decrease in sleep quality, inadequate sleep duration, disruption of circadian rhythm, and sleep breathing disorders such as sleep apnea can all negatively affect the testosterone production cycle and result in decreased testosterone production, and consequently decreased blood testosterone levels, Dr. Lynam says.

Its recommended that adults get at least seven hours of sleep a night. Along with lowering testosterone levels, a lack of sleep can increase your risk for obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and mental health conditions.

Heres a look at the relationship between a lack of sleep and testosterone levels, and how to get a better nights rest to improve your health.

Testosterone levels increase while you sleep and are closely linked to your circadian rhythm, which is the natural process that regulates your sleep-wake cycle.

Research suggests that, in healthy men, testosterone levels rise with the onset of sleep and reach a peak at the first REM sleep episode, explains Darshan Patel, M.D., assistant professor of urology at the University of California San Diegos Mens Health Center.

REM, or rapid eye movement, is the sleep stage associated with dreaming and the consolidation of memories, according to the Sleep Foundation.

For people with traditional sleep patterns, peak testosterone levels occur between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m., Dr. Patel says.

Your testosterone levels are highest in the morning, says Justin Dubin, M.D., a urologist and mens health specialist at Memorial Healthcare System. When we tell people to get their testosterone levels drawn, we want to get the highest levelsusually before 10 a.m.

When you dont get enough sleep, it can affect your circadian rhythm and potentially lower your testosterone levels, he explains.

Maintaining normal testosterone levels requires at least three hours of good sleep each night, Dr. Lynam says.

But you need at least seven hours a night to get the rest your body needs to stay healthy. A small study of 10 healthy young men found that getting just five hours of sleep a night for a week lowered their testosterone levels by 10 to 15 percent.

Another study showed that non-standard shift workers, who work outside the 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. timeframe, were more likely to have lower testosterone levels and worsened symptoms of testosterone deficiency, or hypogonadism.

Sleep and testosterone have a cyclical relationship. While lack of sleep affects testosterone production, research shows that low testosterone can affect sleep quality. Testosterone replacement therapy can help, but if your levels get too high, your sleep duration will suffer.

Thats why its always important to work with your doctor on treatment for testosterone deficiency.

Age and obesity are two main factors that lower your testosterone. And, they also affect your sleep, which can impact testosterone levels.

Your total testosterone naturally drops between 1 percent and 2 percent a year as you age. Sleep patterns also shift with age. Older people report finding it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep, as well as waking up during the night and sleeping less.

Obesity is linked to insomnia and sleep apnea, which are also associated with lower testosterone. Chronic sleep loss can create a hormonal imbalance in the body that can lead to weight gain.

Getting a good nights sleep can help keep your testosterone levels in balance, lower your risk for several chronic conditions, and just make you feel better throughout the day. Here are some ways to improve your sleep, according to the Mayo Clinic:

"The Complex Relationship Between Testosterone, Monogamy, and … – NewsBreak Original

There have been reports of a significant decrease in male testosterone levels, although the exact percentage may be uncertain. This decrease has been linked to various factors, including a decline in sexual activity and interest in sex among men.

This raises questions about the impact of monogamy on male sexual behavior and testosterone levels. Some argue that monogamy may lead to a decrease in male testosterone levels, which could in turn affect their masculine traits and attractiveness to their partners.

However, it's important to consider whether lower testosterone levels are necessary for a long-term relationship and whether a decrease in sexual appetite is a worthwhile trade-off. Additionally, it's unclear whether men need multiple sexual partners to maintain their testosterone levels.

Are Testosterone Levels Really Dropping by 50%? Here's What the Data Says

Testosterone is a hormone produced in the testes that plays a crucial role in male development and overall health. It's known to affect everything from muscle mass and bone density to sex drive and mood. In recent years, there has been a lot of talk about declining testosterone levels among men in the United States, with some alarming claims being made about just how significant that decline is. But what does the data actually say?

The Claim: Testosterone Levels Have Dropped by 50%

One of the most commonly repeated claims is that the average testosterone level among American men has dropped by nearly 50% over the past two decades. This assertion has been made in numerous articles and social media posts, often citing studies from 2007 and 2021.

The 2007 study, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, found that the total testosterone levels in American men had declined by about 22% when comparing levels from 1985-1987 to those from 2002-2004. The 2021 study, published in European Urology Focus, looked at the testosterone levels of adolescent and young adult men in the US and found a decline of roughly 25% between 1999 and 2016.

While both studies do show a decline in testosterone levels over time, the claim that levels have dropped by almost 50% over the past two decades is misleading. As Dr. Ranjith Ramasamy, a urologist at the Miami University Miller School of Medicine and author of the 2021 study, pointed out in a fact-check by USA Today, the studies cover a total of three decades, not two, and cannot be simply added together. Furthermore, neither study assessed men over the past two decades, so any claim about the decline over that specific time period is not based on the available data.

What Does the Data Really Say?

The available data does suggest that testosterone levels have been declining over time, though at a more modest pace than some of the more alarmist claims would suggest. In addition to the two studies already mentioned, there have been a number of other studies that have examined testosterone levels in American men. A 2017 study published in JAMA found that total testosterone levels declined by about 1% per year on average among men aged 39-70 between 1987 and 2004.

While the reasons for the decline in testosterone levels are not fully understood, there are a number of potential factors that have been suggested. One of the most commonly cited explanations is the rise in obesity rates in the US. Obesity is known to be associated with lower testosterone levels, and the prevalence of obesity has increased significantly over the past few decades. A sedentary lifestyle and changes in diet are also thought to be contributing factors.

What Should Men Do If They're Concerned About Testosterone Levels?

If you're experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, such as decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, and depression, it's important to talk to your doctor. They can run tests to check your testosterone levels and help you determine the best course of action. It's worth noting that low testosterone levels can often be addressed through lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet and increasing your physical activity. In some cases, medication may be recommended, but this should only be done under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.

In conclusion, while testosterone levels have been declining among American men over the past few decades, claims that levels have dropped by almost 50% over the past two decades are not supported by the available data. Men who are concerned about their testosterone levels should speak with their doctor to determine the best course of action.

Have you ever wondered if just thinking about sex can change your hormone levels? Well, a study conducted by Katherine L Goldey and Sari M van Anders investigated this very question. The study found that sexual stimuli can increase testosterone and cortisol levels in males of various species, including humans, and that thinking about sex can increase testosterone levels in women.

However, the study found that sexual thoughts did not change testosterone or cortisol levels in men compared to control conditions. Instead, the study suggests that higher baseline and post-activity cortisol levels correspond to larger increases in self-reported sexual and autonomic arousal.

This means that although sexual thoughts may not be sufficient to change hormone levels in men, cortisol may facilitate sexual arousal by directing energy towards a sexual situation. Overall, the study sheds light on the complex relationship between hormones and sexual arousal, highlighting the importance of both psychological and physiological factors in sexual experiences.

Eggs lead to Conor Benns clearance after positive test –

Conor Benn has been cleared of a doping offense after the World Boxing Council (WBC) ruled that a highly elevated consumption of eggs constituted a reasonable explanation for his positive finding.

A scheduled catchweight grudge bout against British rival Chris Eubank Jr scheduled for October last year was canceled after trace amounts of a fertility drug, clomiphene which is known to elevate testosterone levels in men were found in Benns urine.

Benn, 26, had denied intentionally or knowingly ingesting any banned substances and in December last year broke his silence in a long post on Instagram, saying: The truth will soon come out.

On Wednesday, the WBC, having consulted a nutritionist, announced that it was reinstating the London boxer in its rankings and stated there was no conclusive evidence that Benn engaged in intentional or knowing ingestion of clomiphene.

Mr Benns documented and highly elevated consumption of eggs during the times relevant to the sample collection raised a reasonable explanation for the adverse finding, it said. The WBC shall include Mr Benn in its ratings during the period immediately following the issuance of its ruling.

The global governing body said that it would correspond with the World Anti-Doping Agency over concerns about clomiphene as a food contaminant and the potential for false positives caused by ingestion of contaminated food.

Despite the WBC ruling, Benn remains under investigation by UK Anti-Doping and the British Boxing Board of Control.

Until their inquiries are finished, Benn will not be licensed to box in the UK, but could fight in another country under a different jurisdiction.

Comments will be moderated. Keep comments relevant to the article. Remarks containing abusive and obscene language, personal attacks of any kind or promotion will be removed and the user banned. Final decision will be at the discretion of the Taipei Times.

Taboo? Not quite. Consumers view sexual health as part of their … – Nutritional Outlook

Once known for its adulterated products and significant risks, the sexual health supplement market is on the rebound. In fact, its expected to grow by $801.29 million from 2022 to 2026, representing a CAGR of 10.41%.1 One the one hand, says Mariko Hill, global innovation manager at Gencor (Austin, TX), this growth can be attributed to the mainstreaming of notions like libido and sexual health; on the other, consumer awareness of supplements ability to naturally address libido, sexual desire, and hormonal issues is also on the upswing.

Brands are making sexual health supplements trendyor sexierby good marketing and the delivery of clinical evidence regarding the ingredients in the formula, says Hill. In turn, consumers are willing to spend more money in the category. Consumers want to buy from a brand they trust with clinically validated ingredients, says Elise Kaiser, vice president of sales, North America, at Ixoreal Biomed (Los Angeles, CA).

Perhaps most significantly, market growth can largely be attributed to the widening of the consumer audience. According to Carlos Rodriguez, communication manager at Pharmactive Biotech Products SLU (Madrid, Spain), there is a shift in whos using the products; once reserved for men, women are now getting in on the action, seeking out products for sexual performance, appetite, and pleasure.

Male sexual performance has definitely traditionally been the driving force behind why consumers gravitate towards most of these supplements, agrees Ixoreals Kaiser. However, even sexual health supplements for women are now gaining traction.

Holistic Ingredients for Men and Women

Sexual health is not a new category. What is new is what consumers demand of their sexual health products. Instead of a silver bullet, todays consumers seek a holistic approach that addresses sexual health in a nourishing way and also takes into account lifestyle habits and other factors that can impact sexual health.

To that end, HP Ingredients (Bradenton, FL) new sexual health ingredient for women, Nu-Femmea combination of 400 mg of Labisia pumila extract plus 100 mg of the companys flagship LJ100 Eurycoma longifolia, or tongkat ali, ingredientis designed for perimenopausal and menopausal women and shows promise via its first published study in 2020. Researchers recruited 119 women aged 41 to 55 to take part in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in which 60 consumed 500 mg of Nu-Femme and 59 took a placebo for 24 weeks. The Nu-Femme group showed a significant increase in vitality at week 12 and week 24, whereas a significant improvement in vitality scores was only observed at week 24 for the placebo group.2 Plus, Nu-Femme showed an increase of 21% in vitality index scores, whereas the increase in the placebo group was only 14% at the end of week 24.

Underscoring the need for a holistic approach, HP Ingredients put LJ100 to another sex health test in 2021. Researchers randomized 45 middle-aged men with androgen deficiency into four groups: placebo only, supplement only, training plus placebo, and training plus supplement. After six months, sexual satisfaction scores increased significantly for those taking the supplement (29%); however, sexual satisfaction increased by 35% for those that supplemented and also integrated training into their routines.3

It appears that, from conversations with our customers, they are looking to provide a more holistic type of approach, not just something that promotes hard and fast [results], but a product that provides a more nourishing effect, promoting hormonal balance with a nutritional edge, says Annie Eng, CEO of HP Ingredients.

Also meeting this trend is Testofen, an ingredient for men from Gencor, which was the subject of five clinical studies supporting its benefits for sexual desire and vitality, muscle mass, and testosterone levels. Supplementing diets with products containing Testofen and incorporating regular resistance exercise can help men maintain healthy levels of free testosterone that are already within normal rangewhich, in turn, supports multiple bodily functions4, explains Maggie McNamara, marketing director at Gencor.

Adaptogens Remain Relevant

As it turns out, the original holistic sex health ingredients, adaptogens, are still going strongwith some health-boosting advances.

At Sempera Organics (Morgan Hill, CA), Cordyceps militaris is offered as a standalone powder standardized to 20% beta-glucans, offering similar biomolecular properties as sexual health mainstay Cordyceps sinensis, without any of the taxonomic controversy. Cordyceps contains high amounts of adenosine, which is the precursor to adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the universal energy currency powering cellular work, says Nirmal Nair, CEO and founder of Sempera Organics. Sexual health aside, C. militaris presents a huge range of biological activities including anti-inflammation, immune stimulation, enhanced physical performance and endurance, promotion of restful sleep, and improvement of depression, all of which promote sexual health indirectly to some degree.

KSM-66 Ashwagandha from Ixoreal Biomed may not be a new ingredient, but it was the subject of a new 2022 study finding that eight weeks of supplementation can impact sexual function and quality of life, as well as serum testosterone and prolactin levels.5 On the heels of these findings, researchers conducted a second randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial on women for sexual wellness, finding that the ingredient can statistically improve arousal, orgasm, desire, and satisfaction after eight weeks of supplementation.6

Women overall tend to respond better to preventative and long-term care, says Kaiser. There is ample white space for focusing on women. The female sexual health category has typically underperformed and is still an underserved category.

Looking Ahead

In addition to developing and promoting more sexual health products for women, it will be incredibly important going forward that brands and ingredient suppliers commit to the highest quality standards, as the market has fallen prey to adulterations in the past, says Pharmactives Rodriguez.

The future will also see varied delivery formats like gummies, chews, and functional foods explode in this category, with Ixoreals Kaiser noting that opportunities exist for bars and ready-to-drink beverages for sexual health. As Gencors Hill points out, these are already gaining traction abroad: Wellbeing Nutrition (India) launched a melt-in-the-mouth strip featuring Gencors Testofen fenugreek ingredient, and Angfa (Japan) recently placed a ready-to-drink beverage with the same ingredient in supermarkets.

As the holistic trend grows, so too will the categorys demand for ingredients that address underlying risk factors for developing sexual health problems. Examples such as stress, poor circulation, and sleep issues are all underlying reasons a person would have sexual health problems, says McNamara. Adding ingredients to support these areas of challenge would greatly improve the efficacy of a product.

Finally, the holistic trend will also continue to benefit the growth of the market overall, especially as both women and men view sexual health as part of overall wellness. I think we will see more openness, less hype, and more of a focus on the wellness angle, to appeal to a wider audience, says Eng. We see that the racy approach has a limited appeal and is often considered dubious.

The Medical Minute: Dont wait to treat your enlarged prostate – Pennsylvania State University

HERSHEY, Pa. Half of all men develop enlarged prostates also called benign prostatic hyperplasia by the time theyre 50 years old. The walnut-sized gland never stops slowly growing. But like the fabled frog in hot water, men often dont realize how disruptive the symptoms of an enlarged prostate have become.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is, like the name says, not malignant. It is not cancer. Instead, its the enlargement of the prostate caused by testosterone. Because most men produce the hormone throughout their lives, the prostate continues to grow typically inward, compressing the base of the bladder as well as the urethra, said Dr. Jaime Herrera Caceres, a urologic oncologist at Penn State Health Specialty Services.

An enlarged prostate makes the bladder work harder to push the urine out due to the increasingly narrow urethra. Patients start not being able to empty their bladder completely, Herrera Caceres said. So maybe theyre retaining three to five ounces in their bladder, meaning it fills more quickly and they have to go more often.

Not only will those with an enlarged prostate typically have to wake up at night often multiple times to relieve themselves, they may also have a weaker urine stream and have to strain to urinate. Going to the bathroom becomes stressful, Herrera Caceres said. When youre out and about, youre always conscious of where the next toilet is because you know youll need it soon.

Men may just accept the disruptive symptoms of their enlarged prostate and not seek treatment. But Herrera Caceres cautions that as the prostate continues to grow, serious complications can develop. If you ignore the symptoms, you run the risk of bladder failure and kidney failure of having a catheter or needing dialysis.

When patients see Herrera Caceres, he asks about their symptoms and how severe they are. He also measures urine flow to learn how weak or strong it is and examines the prostate to determine its size and shape to help guide him in finding the appropriate treatment.

Prescription medications are the most common treatment for mild to moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia. Some relax the bladder neck muscles and muscle fibers in the prostate, making urination easier, Herrera Caceres explains. Others can shrink the prostate by decreasing the amount of the active form of testosterone, though these might take up to six months to be effective and may also reduce sexual desire.

Having benign prostatic hyperplasia in itself does not cause erectile dysfunction, but some treatments might.

Can you take Viagra if you have an enlarged prostate? Herrera Caceres says he has no concerns. In fact, for some patients hes prescribed a different type of medication for erectile disfunction Cialis to control their enlarged prostate symptoms.

For those with moderate to severe benign prostatic hyperplasia, or those who dont respond to medication, surgery may be advised. The classic option is a transurethral resection of the prostate, Herrera Caceres said, explaining that it involves a surgeon going in with a heated loop into the prostatic urethra the portion of the urethra that goes through the prostate and scraping from the inside. Basically, were digging a hole and opening the prostate so theres a better flow.

Other surgical procedures include using heated water or vapor to burn the prostate from inside to open it and using a laser to enucleate the gland. These treatments require hospitalization for a day and a catheter for up to five days, Herrera Caceres said. They may also cause retrograde ejaculation, in which the seminal vesicles fail to squish the semen into the prostate and instead it goes into the bladder.

One new treatment option that Herrera Caceres calls a game changer is the minimally invasive procedure iTind. It involves placing a temporary stent in the prostatic urethra and having it slowly expand over the course of a week.

Patients are asleep for the 15-minute procedure and dont need a catheter at all, Herrera Caceres said. Theres also no hospital stay. Patients will return a week later to have the stent removed.

The technology is new, with patients only tracked for three years thus far, Herrera Caceres says. Those results show continued relief from the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Patients have reported mild to moderate discomfort during the week that the iTind device is in place, but once its removed, they dont experience the side effects caused by the medications and other procedures used to treat, the urologist says.

No matter what surgical procedure is used to treat the condition, as long as the body produces testosterone, the prostate will grow. It may take eight or 10 years, but when it happens, patients should discuss their symptoms with their doctor to see if they should be treated with medication or another surgical procedure, Herrera Caceres said.
