The 4 foods that can help you lose weight faster without really trying… – The Irish Sun

MANY people believe shedding the pounds involves munching on nothing more than some measly salad leaves.

However, there are actually several different foods that you can - and should - eat more of to maximise yourweight lossgoals.

To lose weight, the number of calories you eat need to be exceeded by calories burned.

Having awell-balanced dietis essential for helping you achieve that.

Here we talk you through the four key foods that you should be including in your diet in order toachieve your weight loss goals- and some you might be surprised by.

It's time to throw out that spiralizer, pasta is back on the menu.

Studieshave shown that people lose moreweightwhen their diet includes pasta regularly.

"So instead of quitting spaghetti, consider reducing portion sizes," nutritionist Emma Beckett of the University of Newcastle wrote inThe Conversation.

A portion of pasta (145g) contains a 7.7g of protein - a macronutrient which has been shown to help aid weight loss by keeping you full for longer.

Emma also suggests switching to wholegrain pasta which has a higher fibre content andbenefitsforgut health.

And the news for pasta lovers gets even better if you're a fan of leftovers.

"When pasta is cooked and cooled, some of the carbohydratesconvert to resistant starch," Emma explains.

Starch is resistant to digestion, isbetter for blood sugar levels and can help you feel fuller.

It might sound mad, but starting your day with chocolate could help you burn fat and supercharge your weight loss.

One study published in theFASEB Journalcould be sweet relief for many people who want to lose weight, but don't want to give up their favourite treat.

A balanced diet means having having a little bit of what we fancy -with experts saying snaffling choc at night could also help weight loss efforts.

Scientists found eating chocolate first thing could help with fat burn and reduce glucose levels in the blood

At night, they said it could alter metabolism and led to more regular sleep patterns.

If you want to be even more virtuous, opt for dark choc over milk.

Being both low in fat and calories, yoghurt is an ideal food to add to your diet if you're trying to lose weight.

It can help improve your digestive health, and combat against any potential bloating and excessive gas thanks to the probiotics it contains.

Meghan Markle's nutritionist even emphasised the benefits of yoghurt- admitting that she tells her clients to eat the dairy treat before every meal.

And a recent study undertaken at the University of Tennessee revealed just how good yoghurt is for blitzing belly fat.

The results revealed that participants who ate 18 ounces of yoghurt per day (as well as reducing their overall calorie intake) lost, on average, 81 per cent more belly fat compared to those who opted to diet without eating yoghurt.

It's also a great source for vitamins and minerals too, with zinc, iodine, potassium and vitamin B5 all active within yoghurt.

Berries are a bit of a secret weapon when it comes to achieving a slim physique.

Research has found that going for red or blue coloured fruit - such as cherries, blueberries, blackberries and red grapes - can help you lose unwanted belly fat.

The chemicals which give the fruit their brightly-coloured appearance can also burn stomach fat and help you get the flat abdominals youre after.

How to speed up weight loss

DIETITIAN Melissa Meier has offered her advice on exactly what you need to eat every day to speed up your weight loss results:

1. Five servings of vegetables

Try and have mostly the non-starchy kind. One serving is a cup (about 200g) of raw vegetables or half a cup (100g) of cooked veg.

2. Two servings of fruit

For one serving think an apple, two kiwi fruits or a cup of berries.

3. Six portions of carbs

Preferably wholegrain... one portion is equivalent to one slice of bread, half a cup of cooked rice, pasta or noodles, or a quarter of a cup of muesli.

4. Two and a half servings of protein

One serving is just 65g of cooked red meat, 80g of cooked poultry or 100g of cooked fish.

Two eggs, a tin of tuna or 170g of tofu also count as a portion.

Spreading this protein content throughout the day is recommend, too.

5. Two and a half portions of dairy or alternatives

Stick to mostly reduced-fat. One serving is one cup of milk, three quarters of a cup of yoghurt or two slices of hard cheese.

Glucose Goddess reveals what she eats for a healthy dinner – Daily Mail

When I created the Glucose Goddess Method, I never envisioned it as a weight loss diet.

As a biochemist, I was fascinated by the discovery that a few simple and sometimes surprising hacks could flatten the rollercoaster of spikes and troughs our blood sugar levels go through in the day. And I was very focused on the positive impact this levelling out has on our mental and physical health.

But when I ran a pilot experiment last year with nearly 3,000 people trying the Method for a month, more than a third of the participants who wanted to lose weight did so and, incredibly, eating more than usual, not counting calories or cutting out any foods, even dessert.

In yesterdays Daily Mail I explained how important it is to start the day with a savoury breakfast to keep blood sugar levels on an even keel from the get-go.

Today, in the second extract from my new book, I will explain the science behind how eating more food can improve your health and can lead to fat loss.

The key is taking on board two of my other hacks: eating a bowl of salad or a plate with vegetables before you tuck into lunch or dinner; and adding a little protein, fat or fibre to any naked carbohydrates. Later, Ill show you how. But first, lets deal with the why.

Our blood sugar levels (also called glucose levels) are designed to rise naturally after we eat sugary and starchy foods and to fall once the cells around the body have taken up glucose from those foods as fuel. But if we eat a lot of sweet and starchy foods at once, glucose levels can spike too high and too fast. This can set up a damaging inflammatory response in the body as it struggles to get glucose levels back to normal.

One response is to pump out the hormone insulin to extract glucose from the blood and divert it into fat reserves. Often this rush of insulin works so efficiently that it leaves blood glucose levels rather low, which is why you might experience an energy dip a few hours after a fast-food meal or snack, triggering powerful cravings for something sweet as your body struggles to build those blood sugar levels back up again.

Many people live with erratically fluctuating glucose levels throughout the day, big spikes and big crashes and an increase in the overall amount of glucose in the body. Long-term, this unsettled condition puts the body in a state of stress that has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and Alzheimers.

It is hardly surprising people who want to lose fat struggle to do so when the food they eat is being channelled into fat reserves and impossible to resist cravings drive them to eat unhealthy food. Taking steps to flatten these glucose peaks and troughs helps break free of this vicious cycle.

And the result, as my experiment showed, is weight loss, even though you might end up eating more food than before, with no restrictions and certainly no counting calories.

Thats because when we flatten those glucose curves, cravings dissipate, putting us back into control of what and when we eat.

Hormones rebalance and, with less insulin washing around, our body can ease out of fat-storing mode into a more natural fat- burning mode more frequently and for longer periods of time. Of the 2,700 participants in my study, 38 per cent of those who wanted to lose weight did so with no restrictions and certainly no counting calories. All through the power of my glucose hacks.

Other scientific studies support this finding with evidence showing that people who focus on flattening their glucose curves can eat more calories and lose fat more easily than people who eat fewer calories but do not flatten their glucose curves. For instance, a 2017 study from the University of Michigan showed that when people focused on flattening their glucose curves (even if they ate more calories than the other group did), they lost more weight (17lb versus 4lb) than those who ate fewer calories and took no care with their blood sugar levels.

The action of insulin is key. When blood glucose levels are steady, insulin levels come down. A 2021 review which analysed 60 weight loss studies proved that insulin reduction always precedes weight loss.

The feedback from my 1.8 million followers on Instagram has also been pretty universal: if you take care not to spike your glucose levels, you can eat until you feel full, without counting calories, and this will not only improve your health but also often naturally leads to fat loss as a consequence. The key is adding the right calories to your meals calories that keep you satiated and reduce cravings, insulin release and inflammation.

One of my favourite and most impactful hacks is to eat a vegetable or salad-based dish as a starter to your lunch or dinner. Youll find that whatever you eat after that starter is much less likely to cause any kind of blood glucose spike.

Thats because when you eat fibrous food such as salad or vegetables on a relatively empty stomach, the fibre deploys itself against the walls of your intestine, forming a viscous protective mesh that stays in place for a few hours. This mesh makes it difficult for glucose molecules from the rest of the meal to get through the lining of the intestine and into the bloodstream. So the speed of glucose getting into the blood is reduced, making glucose spikes less likely.

As long as you have a salad or vegetable starter, you can eat anything you usually have, safe in the knowledge that there will be less of a glucose spike from your meal due to the protective fibre mesh.

To give you an idea of the effect, one study that simply flipped the order in which foods were eaten during a meal showed that by putting vegetables first (and the carbohydrates last), the glucose spike of the meal was decreased by up to 75 per cent. This was achieved without changing the meals contents, just by placing the vegetables first and harnessing the power of the fibre they contain. Its quite remarkable.

So, if your meal normally contains plenty of vegetables, you can turn them into a veggie starter by eating the greenery first before tucking into anything else.

But for this hack to work best, plate up a vegetable starter which is 30 per cent the size of the subsequent meal. Lentils and pulses count as vegetables, and a chunky vegetable soup is a great stomach-liner. (A smooth blended soup wont be as effective because the fibre particles are pulverised by blending, rendering them less effective at creating that protective mesh.)

Snacking on carrot sticks while you prepare your meal is just as effective. Your vegetable starter can be as simple as ten olives.

If you toss your salad in a vinegar-based dressing, youll be checking off two hacks in one. (In tomorrows Daily Mail, Ill explain how the acetic acid in vinegar slows the rate at which glucose is released.)

Any vegetables work, cooked, raw, dressed or plain. When at a restaurant, ask for a side salad at the beginning of your meal or pick a vegetable dish from the menus sides section. If youre out, carry a bag of baby carrots, cherry tomatoes or cucumber sticks to nibble on before you eat your next meal.

John Goodman’s weight loss journey: How did the actor lose so … – Yen.com.gh

John Stephen Goodman, better known as John Goodman, is a well-known American actor. He gained recognition on television before moving on to film acting, where he became a celebrated and highly regarded actor. Goodman was recognized for his large frame, weighing nearly 400 pounds or 180 kilograms. But how did he lose this weight? What does John Goodman's weight loss journey look like?

John Goodman started his acting career in 1983 in the TV movie The Face of Rage. He has since been featured in several films and TV series, such as The Paper Chase (1985), Sea of Love (1985), Sesame Street (1995), Alpha House (2013-2014) and Monster at Work (2021-2023). Apart from his illustrious career, the actor initially struggled with his weight. However, John Goodman's weight loss photos are proof enough of how hard he has worked on his weight. Do you know the story behind his 200-pound weight loss journey?

For the majority of his life, young John Goodman has battled his weight. He has tried for decades to lose weight in vain. In a 2011, interview with David Letterman, he explained his painful experiences of losing weight only to regain it quickly.

He was nearing 400 pounds at the time and decided he needed to find a long-term diet that would get him to a healthy body weight for good. So what happened to John Goodman's weight?

After realizing the adverse effects of being overweight on his well-being, John Goodman began his efforts to lose weight in 2007. His first difficult step was to give up alcohol, which he was addicted to then.

He did, however, seek assistance from professionals and was able to remain sober following his treatment. Along with his main Mediterranean diet plan, the American actor's soberness aided in the weight loss journey.

The American actor began the diet plan in 2011 after employing his instructor, Mackie Shilstone. According to the trainer, the Mediterranean diet is a mixture of plant-based meals rich in vegetables and fruits, low in red meat, and "strongly influenced by olive oil."

Incorporating a high quantity of olive oil into the eating plan makes individuals feel packed and energized. It also helps digestion, boosts metabolism, and promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the body.

The diet emphasizes anti-inflammatory foods such as citrus fruits, leafy vegetables, nuts, and fatty fish, in addition to sustainability. John Goodman has adhered to the diet for almost a decade and attributes his miraculous transformation to it.

Along with the dietary pattern, the famous actor works out six days a week. John Goodman now supposedly walks 10,000 to 12,000 steps daily as part of his workout regimen. According to the celebrity's trainer, his improvement occurred over time and is still ongoing.

John had his first panic attack in 1985 while performing in a Broadway production of Big River. It went on for a week before John took the stage each night. John had been diagnosed with depressive disorders sometime in his life. He says depression is a "chemical thing, a brain thing," manifesting as "widespread discontent with everything."

He initially weighed almost 400 pounds or 180 kilograms. In 2014, John lost over 100 pounds. At 69, the actor displayed his dramatic 200-pound weight loss at The Freak Brothers Experience in Los Angeles after employing an individual trainer.

John Goodman's weight loss journey started by quitting alcohol, avoiding processed meals, and consuming many fruits and vegetables. He also began working out regularly, incorporating both cardio and strength coaching.

Want To Slim Down In Time For Summer? Dietitians Say You Should Make This One Change In Your Diet – SheFinds

Adding more fruits and vegetables (along with a healthy balance of whole grains, lean meats, nuts, and beans) to your diet is a safe and healthy way to lose weight. Not only are they fat-burning, but fruits and vegetables also provide essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that are important for your overall health. And, according to the American Cancer Society, diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of some types of cancer and other chronic diseases.

"Fruits and vegetables supply lots of fiber, water, and nutrients, helping you to feel full after a meal or snack, for fewer calories and unhealthy fat than if you grab a bag of chips, candy bars, or even certain granola bars," Margulies says. Furthermore, she says that when it comes to fruits and vegetables, they should make up, "50% of every plate, meal, [or] snack."

"I recommend always including a fruit and/or vegetable as part of every meal and snack," Margulies continues. "Your produce should be at least half of your plate or meal, leaving less room to go too heavy on carbs, and enough room for a healthy dose of proteins, like lean meats and other protein sources."

Instead of worrying about what you should be eating less of before summer, Margulies suggests focusing on what you need to eat more of. "Produce will help you feel full and satisfied with your meals and snacks, so you are not looking for more. When your mindset is to eat less, your brain automatically is looking for more," she notes. "So go for more, just make your low-calorie, high-fiber, nutrient-dense, fruits, and veggies!"

So, there you have it! If you want to achieve lasting weight loss goals, Margulies recommends adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet. And, just remember that healthy eating alone will not result in substantial weight loss. You also have to consistently work out, drink enough water every day, and get plenty of sleep.

Iron Biby opens up on dramatic 88lbs weight loss and reveals his radical diet change including drinking… – The US Sun

IRON Biby is preparing to take the strongman world by storm.

Set to become the first athlete to represent Burkina Faso at World's Strongest Man this year, the 30-year-old will be heading to the competition with a slimmer physique than fans will be used to.

In a recent exclusive with The U.S. Sun, Biby, whose real name is Cheick Ahmed al-Hassan Sanou, explained how his recent call up to the competition came amidst his push to lose weight.

Having received the offer around a month ago, although his participation was only recently made public, Biby said that he's down an impressive 40kg (88pounds).

He explained: "I'm not in my best, best shape because I did lose it.

"It took eight months for me to lose 40 kilograms and I was just doing like CrossFit training, like assault bike, stuff like that.

I wasn't really prepping for World Strongest Man. And then I had the call, I'm like, 'Okay, it's about time.'"

Biby's weight loss can not only be attributed to his new exercise routine but also his drastically changed diet.

He explained: "So the shape I had before, you know, I weighed over 210 kilograms (463pounds) and I used to eat like two rib-eye steaks in the morning with eggs and bread."

In order to drop the pounds, Biby wouldn't eat until 1pm, starting his day with a cup of "my Yorkshire tea. I love my Yorkshire tea.

"And then I have like just two eggs and chicken breasts. It was really, really like a low, low-calorie diet."

Now prepping for World's, however, has meant yet another switch in his approach to food.

Biby said: "But prepping for World's Strongest Man, my coach Darren (Sadler) told me to eat more.

"And I'm having a hard time eating more, but I'm trying, you know.

"Let's say in the morning I can have like three eggs and one rib eye steak, and then every three or four hours I can have rice and the chicken or rice and fish.

"I love, I love salmon, so my diet has just been like that.

"I didn't really like calculating the amount of calories I'm getting."

For Biby, 2023 will mark his second shot at the competition, having previously been "shipped back" in 2018 after he contracted Malaria.

And while he may not be in his "best shape," he's focusing on using this as a learning experience in order to "come back stronger and stronger."

But don't expect Biby to be happy simply going for a participation badge.

"I'm going with all my heart," he said. "When I want to do something, I do it with all my heart and I will give my best in every event."

WSM is set to take place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina from April 19-23.

My Husband and I Both Take Ozempic. What Our Experience Has … – Healthline

Married couple Susan and Michael Dixon share how their experiences taking Ozempic have affected their health and changed their relationship with food.

When 51-year-old Susan Dixon was diagnosed with prediabetes, meaning her blood sugar levels were higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes, her doctor prescribed Ozempic off-label.

I have an [aortic aneurysm], so because of my heart condition and because Im pre-diabetic, my doctor wanted me to get some weight off, Susan told Healthline.

Susan was already aware of Ozempic because her 54-year-old husband, Michael, began taking it about six months earlier to treat his type 2 diabetes and bring down his A1C to under 6. Within four months of taking the medication, his A1C lowered to 5. He also lost 15 pounds.

Seeing Michaels success absolutely influenced me wanting to try it, Susan said.

Over the years, she tried several weight loss programs, including Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, which brought her some short-term success. In 2008, before her and Michaels wedding, she also took the prescription phentermine, and as a result, lost 40 pounds.

However, over the years, she found it hard to keep the weight off no matter what method she used. She said Ozempic has worked the best for weight management. After taking the medication for six weeks, she lost 14 pounds.

[Ozempic] made me feel full and made my interest in food not really there. Michael would say, Whats for dinner? and I thought, I dont really care. Id have some cereal and a few bites of food, and Id be okay. Food did not interest me, she said.

The active chemical compound semaglutide that is in Ozempic can cause weight loss by making a person feel full, keeping them from emptying their stomach longer than usual, and by lowering blood sugar, said Dr. Rekha B. Kumar, associate professor of medicine at Cornell and Chief Medical Officer at Found.

Michaels reason for trying Ozempic was solely to manage type 2 diabetes and lower his blood sugar rather than lose weight. In fact, he said for the 15 years he has lived with diabetes, he never tried to lose weight.

Im not someone who follows a diet, so I wasnt the best patient and didnt watch carbs and sugar intake, he told Healthline. Ive never had a desire or drive to lose weight. I have to get more into that mindset because I know I should lose more weight.

While taking Ozempic, he feels full faster. This makes him eat half of what he used to eat prior to being on the medication.

I eat half a sandwich and say Oh, Im full. Thats why I lost weight, he said.

After being on Ozempic for a few years, he became accustomed to responding to the full feeling.

Im able to put that other half sandwich down and I try to stop eating when I realize Im full, Michael said.

Susan also learned to eat smaller-sized portions due to Ozempic, and said it affected her desire to drink alcohol, too.

I wasnt a big drinker and drank socially before, but now if I have a second glass of wine or drink, it makes me feel ill, so Ive cut down, she said.

Since the Dixons are both on Ozempic, they said it helps them manage their weight together.

Michael not wanting to eat makes me not want to eat. We try very hard not to snack between meals. If I say, its time for dessert or popcorn before bed, and I notice he hasnt eaten them, then I dont have anything, said Susan.

In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration reported shortages of Ozempic. This created controversy due to some people taking the medication off-label to lose weight.

The shortage affected the Dixons in different ways.

For the entire time Michael has been on Ozempic, he was able to get the medication filled. However, for the past three months, his insurance stopped allowing a 90-day supply, which means he no longer gets the discount (which was paying for two months supply and getting one months supply free.) He now is only able to fill one month at a time.

Michael didnt have an issue because his dosage is lower than mine. At the time of the shortage, my dosage was at 1mg and I couldnt find that 1mg anywhere, said Susan.

Due to the shortage, she was unable to fill Ozempic for two-and-a-half months, and during that time, she regained 10 to 12 pounds.

This is common and expected, said Dr. Sethu Reddy, president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology. If people lose access to Ozempic like Susan did or their insurance coverage changes and they cant afford it, this could set back their health progress.

The effects of GLP-1 analogs are not permanent and if the therapy is discontinued, their therapeutic effects dissipate, Reddy told Healthline. Theoretically, these medications will be taken for several years, but it is well known that those with type 2 diabetes eventually lose their ability to make insulin and eventually will need insulin therapy.

Kumar added that a long-term commitment should be considered when starting any medication for a chronic condition, such as diabetes and obesity.

If someone is taking Ozempic off-label or Wegovy on-label, those would need to be continued for weight maintenance as well, said Kumar. Long-term use of medicine for weight management is not unique to the GLP-1 class of medicines, but is true for all medicines used for weight management.

By the time Susan was able to get Ozempic filled again in February 2023, her doctor increased her medication dose. Since then, she lost 5 pounds.

I dont feel as successful as I used to feel before I had to stop taking it. Its working still but not as well as it did in the beginning. My appetite is not as suppressed, but like before, food doesnt excite me, said Susan.

Ozempic has been successful at lowering her blood sugar, though. However, if her blood sugar continues to lower to the point where she is no longer pre-diabetic, her doctor told her she would most likely prescribe Wegovy to continue with weight loss.

I would be happy to no longer have to take Ozempic for blood sugar control, and Id take Wegovy to try to lose more weight, said Susan.

Michael plans to stick with Ozempic as long as his doctor prescribes it for diabetes management.

I also take metformin for my diabetes, so Ill keep taking that and Ozempic since they both seem to be working, he said.
