Want To Lose Tummy Fat Over 40? Cut Out This One Meat, Dietitians Say – Yahoo Life

Tummy fat, particularly in individuals over 40, can be a common concern. As we age, hormonal changes and a slowing metabolism can make it challenging to maintain a trim waistline. To address this issue, making dietary adjustments is often crucial. One effective strategy is reducing the consumption of certain types of meats.

We spoke with Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT, to learn about the one certain meat that you should cut out because it can lead to increased belly fat over 40. Feder revealed that processed meats, such as hot dogs, are a significant contributor to the accumulation of abdominal fat in older adults for many different reasons. Read on to learn more.

Processed meats, like hot dogs, and also bacon and sausages, are well-known for their convenience and savory flavors. However, they are often rich in unhealthy saturated fats, sodium, and additives. In individuals over the age of 40, these processed meat products can be particularly problematic when it comes to tummy fat. The high saturated fat content in processed meats is associated with an increased risk of visceral fat accumulation the type of fat that surrounds vital organs in the abdomen.

"Hot dogs are not only high in unhealthy fats and calories, but they are highly processed with pro-inflammatory ingredients. This can really make it difficult to lose weight and even lead to fat gain. That is why, when you cut out this meat, you can reduce abdominal and overall body fat," Feder notes.

While the idea of parting with popular American staples such as hot dogs can be a tough pill to swallow, it's important to recognize that these processed foods pose a threat not only to our waistlines but also to our heart health, which is very important as we age.

In the quest for better dietary choices, there are healthier alternatives to processed meats such as hot dogs. Exploring these alternatives can lead to a more nourishing and satisfying meal while reducing the associated health risks often linked to processed meat consumption.

"I recommend at the very least to opt for turkey hot dog alternatives. Turkey hot dogs are lower in unhealthy fats and calories. However, it is best to stick to fresh lean cuts of meat instead of processed meat. This can be things like chicken breast, turkey breast, pork tenderlois, sirloins, bison, and fish," says Feder.

Overall, reducing the consumption of hot dogs and even other highly processed meats is a wise dietary choice for those looking to maintain a healthier waistline and overall well-being as they age.

Belly fats link to Alzheimers, and how to lose it to protect your brain – South China Morning Post

A 2020 study found that when belly fat goes above average it can lead to a 39 per cent increased risk of dementia within 15 years compared with those people who have a normal waist circumference.

Singapore study finds extra belly fat in Asians impacts their ability to learn

Now a new study finds that people with higher levels of abdominal body fat are at greater risk of suffering brain atrophy with age.

Cyrus Raji, assistant professor of radiology and neurology at Washington University School of Medicine and one of the study authors, explains.

A higher amount of abdominal fat is thought to be linked with brain shrinkage because excess fat increases the amount of inflammation in the body.

This increased inflammation, especially when chronic, is linked to increased brain atrophy and so potentially a higher dementia risk later.

This is one reason, he explains, why being overweight during midlife that is, in your forties and fifties, 20 years before you may exhibit symptoms of cognitive decline can lead to dementia in later life.

David Merrill, director of the Pacific Brain Health Centre which was also part of the study, says the build-up of abdominal fat is often a proxy measure of other suboptimal health behaviours such as poor diet, excess calorie intake, insufficient physical exercise and high consumption of ultra-processed foods which are full of empty calories and trans fats.

Nutrition and wellness coach Amanda Corse of Fizz Fitness in Tanzania, East Africa, explains.

When we eat more calories than our body needs to burn for energy, particularly sugary or fatty foods, our body has a nifty system of storing it away for later energy requirements, usually in adipose tissue beneath the skin that is, subcutaneous fat.

Consistently overindulging and not getting enough movement in your life, along with high stress and poor sleep, can prompt the build-up of the more dangerous visceral fat sometimes called hidden fat because it hugs the organs in your abdominal cavity, including the liver and intestines she says.

This type of fat is linked to diabetes, heart disease and stroke and now, it seems, to dementia too.

Ideally, Corse says, you want to keep visceral fat to below 10 per cent of your total body fat. If it begins to creep up, its doubly important to pay attention to your lifestyle.

Why fat around the middle specifically, though, and not fat around the buttocks or thighs, say?

Most of the fat in the human body whether we are talking about subcutaneous fat or visceral fat is stored in the abdomen, Raji says.

He shows whole-body MRIs of two 61-year-old women one with a high level of visceral and subcutaneous fat, the other with a normal amount of fat.

The amount of brain atrophy evident in the woman with higher body fat is staggering; her brain MRI shows wide-open blank spaces.

Did the study suggest women were more susceptible this time, too? Yes, he says.

We did find a sex difference whereby women have a higher magnitude of brain shrinkage than men in relation to increasing abdominal fat, he says. This needs further investigation, he adds.

Do resistance training three to four times a week and cardio a couple of times a week for at least half an hour. Resistance training extends whats called the after burn that is, your bodys ability to burn fat and carbohydrates even after the resistance session has ended and it builds muscle, which helps elevate your resting metabolic rate.

Weight Loss Surgery Could Cut Cancer Risk in Half Over Time – WebMD

May 1, 2023 Weight loss surgery has long been known to provide health benefits beyond the actual pounds lost. Diabetes can go into remission, sleep apnea can improve, and blood pressure can decrease, research has shown. Now researchers are adding a lower risk of cancer to the list.

The researchers compared almost 56,000 people with obesity who had bariatric surgery to the same number who did not. They tracked how many people developed cancer over the next 10 years.

The surgery group had less than half as many cases of cancer.

We did see a difference in breast cancer, colon cancer, liver cancer, and ovarian cancer incidence with patients in the bariatric surgery group having lower incidence of these four types of cancers when compared to the non-surgical control group, said Vibhu Chittajallu, MD, lead study author and a gastroenterology fellow at University Hospitals in Cleveland.

Obesity has been associated with multiple serious illnesses, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The obesity epidemic is one of the most serious health challenges in the U.S. today, Chittajallu said during an April 27 media preview of research highlights for Digestive Disease Week 2023.

Obesity is also common. The CDC reports thatnearly 42% of American adults have obesity, and rates continue to rise.

Chittajallu and colleagues identified 55,789 people with obesity who underwent the surgery and a control group of others who did not by using billing codes in a national database. Their retrospective, observational study included people undergoing sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and gastric band procedures at one of 47 health care organizations nationwide.

Key Findings

They found 4% of the surgery group and 8.9% of the non-surgery group developed cancer. The bariatric surgery group had lower numbers of new cases for multiple types of cancer.

Cancer Development Over 10 Years

The researchers found significant drops in four specific cancers linked to obesity: breast cancer, colon cancer, liver cancer, and ovarian cancer. Several other cancers were not significantly different between groups, including renal, rectal, and endometrial cancers.

Why the risk of cancer drops after surgery for obesity is not completely understood, Chittajallu said, but bariatric surgery has been shown to lower excess inflammation, elevate insulin, and moderate hormone levels.

Makes Logical Sense

Loren Laine, MD, moderator of the media briefing, described the study as fascinating.

Obesity is clearly associated with a number of different cancers and that's very important. So it makes logical sense that if you lose weight that you will reduce that risk, said Laine, who is a professor of medicine and chief of digestive health at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, CT.

The investigators controlled for risk factors that also could contribute to cancer development, including smoking history, alcohol use, heart disease, and hormone therapies. Laine added it was likely that investigators could not control for all factors because they were limited to information available in the database.

Unanswered Questions

If future research shows that the more weight you lose, the more likely you are to have a reduction in cancer, that would be fascinating, Laine said. Also, it would be interesting to know if other approaches like weight loss medications could decrease the number of cancers too.

We need more research to understand how bariatric surgery affects cancer risk, Chittajallu said, but the significant findings from this study suggest its an exciting avenue for further study.

Princess Beatrice’s significant weight loss after ‘upsetting’ pictures were released – Express

Princess Beatrice has lost a lot of weight over the years (Image: GETTY/PA)

Princess Beatrice has battled with her weight in the past, but she is currently known for her extraordinarily slim body. In 2010, the Princess of York partook in the London Marathon which was when her figure began to visibly change. The Princess reportedly lost two stone in preparation for the run.

Since then, she has kept her trim figure and always looks stunning in photos on royal engagements.

Beatrice was upfront about her weight difficulties in her late teens and early twenties when she had a quite different appearance.

The Princess has attributed her ability to maintain her weight loss to a powerful fitness regimen.

This includes exercise, lots of water, and plenty of fruits and vegetables, which is a claim her fitness trainers have also supported.

Beatrice was motivated to lose weight after pictures taken of her in a swimsuit on a Saint Barthelemy beach in 2008 were released.

Regarding the images, she stated at the time: "I could probably do with losing the odd pound though, so perhaps it's the kick I need.

"It was such an unflattering bikini and I've got one that's so much nicer, so I could have kicked myself for wearing it.

"I thought people were a bit mean, although I know it comes with the territory. The trouble is, I don't have much confidence so it can be quite upsetting," she told The Daily Mail.

Beatrice finished the half-marathon in two hours and 16 minutes in September 2010.

Then in April 2011, the Princess of York partook in the full London Marathon with her boyfriend at the time.

Now 12 years later, Beatrice is a mother-of-one and has never looked better.

Since running the marathons, her weight has not shifted in any great way, and she looks incredible.

Personal trainer Nadya Fairweather helped Princess Beatrice get in shape prior to giving birth to Sienna Mapelli Mozzi.

Nadya commented: "She wanted to build up her stamina and just make exercise a part of her life.

"We train whatever the weather and she never cancels shes pretty hardcore," she told People Magazine.

Princess Beatrice found time for three to five workouts per week, including at-home workouts, despite having a demanding royal schedule.

Prince Philippos of Greece and Nina Flohr married one month after Sienna's birth, and Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi attended the nuptials.

The new mother looked stunning in a two-tone dress that included a wide black skirt with a sparkly pink ribbon adorning it, as well as a beige long-sleeved bodice.

In order to lose weight, it's possible that the royal changed her diet and chose healthier options.

Princess Beatrice most certainly included exercise in her post-birth regimen as well, presumably at varying intensities depending on the type of pregnancy she had.

Here Are The Main Diet Trends to Absolutely Avoid – Girls United

As Summer approaches, many influencers start to share their tips and tricks on how to form a desirable body especially on TikTok. While the intentions of the influencers may be genuine, our bodies are not one size fits all; therefore, there are dangers in following general health advice on the internet without a substantial understanding of nutrition. Typically, advice posted by influencers includes recommendations that work for them and may not be healthy for the viewer. After speaking withJasmine El Nabali, MS, RDN, we concluded which viral TikTok trends can benefit everyone in preparation for summer.

Before evaluating specific videos, she prefaced the conversation by stating, Instead of following restrictive diets or weight loss trends, I recommend eating a balanced diet which includes lean protein, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and fiber for long-term sustainable weight loss. No matter what fad is popular, consistently consuming a well-balanced diet should always be the goal. The motive should be to maintain weight loss by being nutritious. While doing that, achieve the body you desire. Thats a general rule of thumb. She continued, Instead of focusing on the foods you would like to decrease or eliminate from your diet, think about the healthful foods you can add to your diet, and TikTok is a great place for some fun and creative inspiration.

We sent El Nabli four TikTok trends prevalent in the black girl community, and she provided her raw, uncut feedback on them. Use her knowledge to confidently discern whats healthy on social media going forward. By the end of this story, youll feel like a registered dietician from all the wisdom she provides.

The first video promotes a raw vegan cleanse. A raw vegan diet includes fruits, vegetables, sprouted grains, sprouted legumes, raw nuts, and seeds, according toEveryday Health. The content creator displayed what she ate throughout the day, being innovative with her restrictions. El Nablis response to that post was, There is a lot of misconception about the word cleanse. You do not need to cleanse or detox organs. Our kidneys, gut, and liver do all the detoxing we need. I try to steer people away from cleansing or detoxing because it is typically an unnecessary short-term restriction and not a long-term sustainable strategy for weight loss. Essentially, only some things that glitter are gold. Cleanses may be marketed to receive quick results, but they must be more sustainable. There was an advantage to the types of food the content creator was eating. Raw food diets consist of uncooked and unprocessed foods, which can be beneficial in avoiding processed foods and increasing fiber and produce intake. However, there is a risk of not consuming enough protein, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and iron.

The second trend includes mixing the supplements glutamine and oxy shred into a drink and incorporating it into your daily diet. Her immediate response was, Supplements can be a helpful addition to an already balanced diet, but they are not essential or necessary for achieving weight loss goals. She debunks the misconception that using supplements daily is needed to lose weight. Nutritional supplements are meant to supplement, not substitute, an already nutritionally balanced diet, she continued. El Nabli also warns that Supplements are not regulated by the FDA, which means its important for consumers to do their research and be cautious when considering their use. Look for third-party certifications, such as NSF International or USP, which can provide additional assurance of a supplements quality and purity.

This third video amplifies the infamous p-word in weight loss tok- protein. Its highly encouraged to double, triple, and sometimes quadruple up on protein if you want to lose weight. Its a steady trend. Heres what El Nabli had to say about it. Incorporating smaller, more frequent, and high protein meals throughout the day is a great strategy for weight loss, but dont rely on the calories indicated on the video as your goals may differ. She agrees with incorporating more protein in your diet strategy, but regarding calorie count, see whats needed for your body type. She stated, Everyones nutritional needs and daily caloric intake are unique to their body. A what I eat in a day video featuring 2700 calories may be appropriate for weight loss in one individual but may cause weight gain in another.

We have a winner! Not that this was a competition, but this what I eat in a day video is the favorite of our esteemed dietician. She says, When preparing for a summer body and losing weight, eating high protein, staying hydrated, and fueling with fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates, and healthy fats is key. This video displays a well-balanced snapshot that includes protein, healthy fats, carbohydrates, fiber, and highlights the importance of hydration. Adequate water intake can help reduce appetite, increase metabolism, and promote weight loss. When looking to lose weight for the summer healthily, this video is an excellent example of the mixtures of foods you should include in your diet.

Dont you feel like a nutrition expert now? We told you. While thats not the goal and the ability to successfully vet diet trends on social media is we hope you can take this knowledge and apply it to your weight loss journey. We know youll achieve the body goals you desire- healthily.

Here’s What To Eat After a Workout for Weight Loss – Eat This, Not That

Exercise benefits your body in so many amazing ways. For instance, resistance training builds muscle strength and endurance, cardio helps your heart pump more efficiently, and stretching can reduce injuries and boost your flexibility. What's more, exercise can speed up the calorie burn to support your weight loss efforts. If your goal is to drop weight, one approach you may take is calculating calories consumed versus calories burned. A modest deficit in what you consume could aid in your fat loss goals. The foods you consume after working out can also impact your progress, so we're here to share exactly what to eat after a workout for weight loss.

While you may be tempted to head straight to the shower post-exercise, making time for recovery nutrition is essential. Recovery nutrition is the food you eat after your workout that helps your body restore energy, support muscle tissue, and replace essential nutrients that can become depleted during exercise, like carbohydrates and electrolytes. Eating right after you exercise can also help you get more out of subsequent workouts, support muscle growth, and aid in weight loss.

Whether your recovery nutrition is food or drink, there are a few things to keep in mind when putting together a post-workout snack:

You're putting in the effort in the gym, now let's complement that work with the right food choices. Here are eight things to eat after your workout for weight loss. Keep reading to learn all about them, and next, don't miss 10 Habits That Destroy Your Weight Loss Progress After 50.

A convenient source of protein and other essential nutrients, eggs are a great choice for recovery nutrition. Not only can eggs be eaten in a variety of ways, but the protein they provide gives your muscles building blocks to repair and build post-exercise. One large egg provides about 80 calories and 6 grams of protein, making it a satiating food, too. This can regulate your appetite throughout the day and reduce the number of calories you consume, aiding in weight loss.

If you are on the go, pack a couple of hardboiled eggs to have with fruit for a well-rounded recovery snack. At home, use your eggs to make an omelet packed with veggies for a tasty fiber-packed meal.

Another convenient source of protein, shakes make it easy to pack essential nutrients into a single item. Ready-to-drink shakes are great because they provide protein and carbs in one package, eliminating any excuse for skipping your recovery nutrition.

To maximize your weight loss efforts, choose shakes or protein powders that contain whey protein. Research suggests using whey protein in place of other calories can lead to weight loss and muscle gain when in conjunction with strength training. Also, avoid options with added sugar, as these empty calories may slow weight loss.

RELATED: 20 Best Healthy Carbs For Weight Loss

While not the friendliest option if you are heading into an office after your workout, canned or pouched tuna is a great source of protein and essential omega-3 fats. The protein in tuna aids in muscle recovery and allows for a more satiating meal, while research shows that the unsaturated fats further improve recovery of muscle performance and decrease feelings of soreness after working out. While the protein on its own may assist weight loss, experiencing less soreness after a workout may encourage you to engage in additional exercise quicker, further contributing to weight loss. Mix your tuna with avocado for additional unsaturated fats, and enjoy over whole grain crackers for a quality carb.

Who doesn't love a classic PB&J sandwich? A meal enjoyed by children and adults alike, this delicious combination of healthy fats, protein, and carbs is also great after a workout. Any nut or seed butter will work here and provides a solid source of protein and unsaturated fats.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

When choosing your bread, go with a whole-grain option that will contribute some fiber and protein. Incorporating fiber into your recovery meal adds another satiating nutrient to keep you feeling fuller, longer after your workout.

While a small amount of jam can be enjoyed, mashed fruit is an alternative that reduces added sugar. Sugar can detract from your weight loss goals, so instead, let a few frozen raspberries defrost before mashing them with a fork and spreading them on your sandwich.

RELATED: The Best Breakfast Superfoods To Burn Body Fat All Over

By combining two protein-rich foods, one of which also contains whey protein, you've got an excellent recovery snack that may help you drop weight. This is also an option relatively low in calories which can further your efforts.

Combine a light string cheese with a couple of slices of lean deli meat to create a protein-packed snack for fewer than 100 calories! To turn this into a well-balanced recovery meal, wrap your meat and cheese in a whole-grain tortilla with spinach and mustard, and add a side of fiber-packed berries.

While this option is more concentrated in calories compared to many others on this list, trail mix provides a great balance of nutrients important for recovery and weight loss. Protein, fiber, and healthy fats aid your body after a workout and increase satiety which could benefit your weight loss goals.

To really make this option work for your goals, choose a mix that is largely made up of nuts and seeds, and contains zero candy. Additionally, use dried fruit that does not contain any added sugar. If you can't find a store-bought option that works within these parameters, make a batch of your own by using your favorite nuts, seeds, and sugar-free dried fruit. You can even throw in some dried edamame as another source of protein and fiber.

RELATED: The Best Green Smoothies To Maximize Belly Fat Loss, Dietitian Says

Similar to a ready-to-drink protein shake, this option packs your recovery essentials into one food. However, with so many options on the market, it can be tricky to find the bars that best suit your weight loss goals. To simplify this process, look for a bar with at least 10 grams of protein, two grams of fiber, and zero grams of added sugar. A bar that contains some omega-3 fats adds a bonus for muscle recovery and weight loss goals.

With about 25 grams of protein per cup, cottage cheese is a great option after your workout. This protein content helps your muscle recovery and fills you up with minimal time spent in the kitchen. Cottage cheese also contains whey protein which may benefit weight loss, and sodium to replace electrolytes lost through sweat.

Timing is everything with recovery nutrition, and eating within a half hour of finishing your exercise could help you achieve weight loss. To meet this time goal, a convenient snack like cottage cheese topped with melon is a great option.

Coffee and lemon for weight loss: Does it work? – Medical News Today

Drinking coffee may help with weight loss, but theres no evidence that adding lemon improves the effects. However, lemons have other nutritional benefits.

People may have heard from others that adding lemon to coffee can help with weight loss, but there is no scientific research that supports this. Its important that people seeking to lose weight follow nutritional advice from their healthcare professionals.

This article explores what the evidence says about coffee and lemon for managing weight and if adding them both in a drink helps. In addition, it notes any adverse effects.

People may have read online articles or heard anecdotal evidence that adding lemon to coffee can help with weight loss. However, there is no scientific evidence to support the use of lemon coffee for weight loss.

Some studies do suggest that coffee can help with weight loss. However, no research exists to suggest that adding lemon to coffee enhances this effect.

Additionally, its important that people trying to lose weight speak with a healthcare professional to receive science-supported nutritional advice. Online articles that arent supported by scientific research may provide misleading or false dieting information.

Some evidence suggests that drinking coffee may help with weight loss.

For example, a 2023 study found that people with metabolic syndrome who changed from not regularly drinking coffee to drinking one to seven cups a week lost body fat around their middle. Its important to note that this study was conducted in the midst of a Mediterranean diet and physical activity intervention. The authors explain that coffees bioactive compounds may inhibit the growth of fat cells and boost metabolism.

Some people also believe green coffee supplements may aid in weight loss. Green coffee beans are unroasted, unlike regular coffee beans. A 2019 systematic review concluded that green coffee supplements could lead to weight loss, reduced fat percentage, and decreased body mass index (BMI).

More research is needed to determine the correlation between green coffee and weight loss.

Learn more about whether consuming coffee helps burn excess fat.

Lemon may have become popular as a weight loss aid through lemon water diets. However, there is little evidence that lemon water diets work, and the main effects may be due to actually drinking more water rather than adding lemon.

For example, studies suggest that drinking water before a meal may lead to eating less and could be an effective weight loss strategy.

Some studies suggest that lemon detox diets help weight loss, but this is through calorie restriction. Additionally, a 2020 animal study indicates that lemon extract may increase insulin sensitivity and the breakdown of fats, but this may not translate to humans.

Citrus fruits such as lemons are good sources of antioxidants. According to a 2021 review, antioxidants in citrus have anti-inflammatory properties and counteract oxidative stress in the body.

Lemons contain 34.4 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C per fruit, which is 45% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 75 mg for adult females and 38% of the RDA of 90 mg for males.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), vitamin C may help protect against cardiovascular disease and age-related macular degeneration and shorten the length of the common cold.

Learn more about vitamin C.

Acidic drinks and foods may have negative effects on teeth. For example, an older study compared various beverages such as sodas, juice, tap water, and lemon juice. Lemon juice showed higher erosion on dentine and enamel than all other liquids.

In addition, caffeine in coffee may cause adverse effects in some people. Mild effects include:

Some people may also experience more severe effects of caffeine, such as disorientation or seizure. Furthermore, caffeine may cause withdrawal symptoms lasting up to a week if habitual users abruptly stop. Therefore, experts advise that someone should taper off caffeine gradually.

Learn more about the risks and cautions of caffeine.

Some people may be advised to lose weight for their health. A person can speak to their healthcare professional about the most effective way to lose weight and reduce the risk of chronic disease.

If a person has any adverse effects from drinking coffee with lemon, its important that they discuss this with their healthcare professional.

Learn about the difference between weight loss and fat loss.

Some research suggests that drinking coffee may help with weight loss, but no evidence supports adding lemon to improve this effect.

Lemon is a healthy fruit that contains antioxidants and vitamin C, so adding it to coffee may have nutritional benefits. However, citrus juice may erode the enamel on teeth, so it can be helpful that people keep a check on this with a dentist.

Anyone considering losing weight should speak with a healthcare professional. They can tailor nutritional advice depending on an individuals health and any preexisting conditions.

Would You Take A "Skinny Drug" To Lose Weight? – 550 KTSA

Im not a thin person, but I was once much fatter, so Im going to tee off on a writer named Sarah Boseley.

In a Guardian column recently, entitled A Skinny Jab is No Quick Fix for Obesityand no excuse to let Junk Food Companies off the hook, she denounces the emergence of weight-loss drugs.

While admitting that they might be beneficial to some, she laments that they are being embraced too widely, and too prominently (Elon Musk is taking one of them, apparently).

What we really need to do is prevent obesity in the first place, not treat it. OK, I see her point on that.

Ill be the first to say, you shouldnt count on a pill or a jab, or just a diet, or just exercise. Try different combinations and find what works. Listen to people you trust. Ill bet none of them will be politicians.

But, anything that safely and provably makes it easier should be cheered by us all.
