‘There’s no quick fix’: Glasgow woman halved dress size with NHS help – Glasgow Times

A 29-year-old Glasgow woman who dropped six dress sizes after joining an NHS funded weight-loss scheme has told how online support stopped herpiling the pounds back on during lockdown.

Lindsey Kinlochsays her weight battle began at the age of 18 when she had surgery to treat a foot and ankle deformity which left her unable to exercise.

At her heaviest Linsdey, who lives in Stepps,weighed15st 3lb, dangerously overweight for her 4ft 8inch frame.

She suffers from the genetic condition pseudohypoparathyroidism, which affects height and also causes learning difficulties.

After her blood pressure soared and she started experiencing breathlessness Linsey decided to try to lose weight and while initially successful she was worried about being able to sustain it.

Her GP referred her toa local group run by WW, (formerly Weight Watchers) which is funded by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Lindsey admits that the journey from high-caloriefast food and takeaways to healthy meals made from scratch wasnt easy but she persevered andnow weighs a much healthier 10st 11lb and says she is delighted she can still enjoy her favourite tipple of malt whisky.

She said: I have struggled with my weight from the age of 18 or 19 when I had a procedure to treat my foot and ankle deformity. This reduced my mobility to almost zero and post op I was in a wheelchair to get around.

In 2018 I had a second procedure as due to mobility issues I was using a wheelchair and my health was rapidly deteriorating.

"I wanted to try to improve my health but my motivation never came until January 2019 when I had high blood pressure concerns and when I checked my weight I was 15 stone 13lb. Beingonly 4ft 8 I could not afford to be carrying this extra weight.

"My GP decided to refer me to WW and I wans't sure this was going to be for me, but I decided to give it ago.

Lindsey says she was nervous about attendinggroup workshops because of her disabilities.

She said: I was used to mixing in restricted circles, so the thought of attending a new workshop with lots of people I didnt know made me nervous, but I had nothing to worry about as the coach Lesley Park made me feel welcome and all the other members quickly made me feel part of the community.

I have never regretted that choice I made joining and its been the best thing I have done, as its for me.

Its not been easy Im very surprised at how well I have done.

I used to eat without any thoughts to portion sizes, I liked takeaways and loved cake.

"I now enjoy including different food and drinks and love cooking fresh healthy meals and get meal ideas from my app. I enjoytrying different whiskyand one of my favourites is Dalmore and it's great to know I can still enjoy a wee dram and still lose weight.

I used to wear a size 24 but now wearing a size 12, and its great clothes shopping."

Linsey says she was nervous her good habits would slip when lockdown kicked in and her local group workshops stopped.

She said: Thankfully, WW are now running virtual workshops, and make sure I attend every week.

My advice to anyone trying to lose weight would be that there is no quick fix so be proud of every small loss as everyones journey is different, listen to your body more and take time for you if you need it.

30 Easy Ways to Lose Weight Naturally (Backed by Science)

There is a lot of bad weight loss information on the internet.

Much of what is recommended is questionable at best, and not based on any actual science.

However, there are several natural methods that have actually been proven to work.

Here are 30 easy ways to lose weight naturally.

When it comes to weight loss, protein is the king of nutrients.

Your body burns calories when digesting and metabolizing the protein you eat, so a high-protein diet can boost metabolism by up to 80100 calories per day (1, 2)

A high-protein diet can also make you feel more full and reduce your appetite. In fact, some studies show that people eat over 400 fewer calories per day on a high-protein diet (3, 4).

Even something as simple as eating a high-protein breakfast (like eggs) can have a powerful effect (4, 5, 6)

One of the best things you can do to become healthier is to base your diet on whole, single-ingredient foods.

By doing this, you eliminate the vast majority of added sugar, added fat and processed food.

Most whole foods are naturally very filling, making it a lot easier to keep within healthy calorie limits (7).

Furthermore, eating whole foods also provides your body with the many essential nutrients that it needs to function properly.

Weight loss often follows as a natural side effect of eating whole foods.

With a quick glance at handsome Jackson, one might think a Direwolf had wandered off the set of the infamous HBO series, "Game of Thrones," and made its way to the Arizona Humane Society. Although not a very distant relative of his wild cousins, the 9-year-old Alaskan Malamute mix, unfortunately, found his way to the shelter after he and a few other pets were abandoned at their residence. Luckily, neighbors quickly alerted AHS Cruelty Investigators to this situation and they were found to be in good health.

Jackson is a stunning boy who weighs in at a whopping 110 pounds and is in need of a family dedicated to helping him lose weight through diet and exercise, as he is considered to be obese by AHS Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital veterinarians. It was also found that he has arthritis and losing weight will help alleviate some of the pressure put on his joints, as well as help his energy levels and overall health.

Already an instant favorite of staff at AHS, Jackson is the definition of a gentle giant. Always right by his two-legged friends side, this big teddy bear loves to shadow his people and would much rather have company versus playing into the lone wolf stereotype. Absolutely amazing on a leash, a fan of air conditioning, belly rubs and getting his fur brushed, this sweet boy would love to have a big yard he can roam in and an even bigger bed he can snuggle with his family on.

It is hard to look at Clover, or any adorable bunny for that matter, and not instantly be in a brighter and better mood. Absolutely adorable and unique, this cute girl is halfway through her first year in this world at just six months old. Clover and three siblings were found with their mother in late February and brought to the Arizona Humane Society by a Good Samaritan as domesticated bunnies cannot survive on their own in the wild.

These cuties were old enough to be weaned and separated from their mom but needed some time to get bigger and stronger prior to their spay/neuter surgeries. Because of this, they were placed in a loving AHS Foster Hero home for a few months where they received lots of care, were given plenty of socialization and regular checkups to ensure they were happy and healthy.

Clover is a beautiful girl who is sure to bring lots of joy, laughter and love to her future home and although extremely cute and loving, she is a great example of why it is so important to prepare for bringing a new pet into the home. It is vital to make sure that proper research is done on any pet prior to adding them to your family to ensure you are not only able to give them the life they deserve but also that you have the time, energy, space and resources to give them that also fit for you and your family, as well.

Thanks to breakthroughs in medicine and nutrition in recent years, we are living longer than ever before. But this increase in life expectancy also brings an increase in the number of diseases, injuries and impairments that affect older adults. With this in mind, we at the local Visiting Angels office in Salem have created this series of articles to keep our older population and their families informed and to offer some practical advice for meeting the challenges faced by seniors and those who care for them.

While most of us look forward to getting outside and enjoying the sun and warmer temperatures during the summer, prolonged exposure to the sun or extreme heat can be dangerous, and even deadly, especially for older people, whose bodies arent able to adjust as quickly to increases in temperature and who arent as fast to notice thirst and the effects of dehydration. With a few simple precautions, however, everyone can get out there and enjoy all the fun that summer has to offer.

As people age, their bodies lose the ability to conserve water, which makes older people more susceptible to the effects of dehydration. Unfortunately for seniors, the feeling of thirst decreases with age, and they may not register it as quickly as they once did. By the time a person starts to feel thirsty, dehydration has already begun.

While the amount of water needed to stay hydrated varies from person to person and is affected by factors like weight, age and activity, in general, a person should drink a cup of water for every 20 pounds of weight. Those living in hotter areas or who exercise more may need to replenish fluids more often. Those fluids being consumed should be decaffeinated and non-alcoholic. Carbonated soft drinks can also contribute to dehydration.

The bodys ability to adjust to temperature change declines over time, and even small temperature increases can have a drastic effect on seniors living with chronic medical issues. For that reason, loose, light-colored clothing is recommended for the outdoors on hot summer days. Light colors absorb less sunlight than darker colors, and loose-fitting clothes allow the skin to breathe.

Long sleeves and pants protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, while hats with wide brims keep the sun from beating down on the face and back of the neck. Wrap-around sunglasses that protect the eyes from UVA and UVB rays should also be worn.

Long sleeves and hats alone may not always be enough to protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Sunscreen should also be worn to prevent sunburn. The most effective sunscreens have an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or higher and block both UVA and UVB rays.

To be effective, sunscreen should be applied 15 to 30 minutes before going out into the sun, and it should be reapplied frequently during water activities, when it can be washed off easily. Bug spray should also be worn in the evening to prevent mosquito bites, especially by seniors, who are more susceptible to West Nile Virus and encephalitis.

During the summer months its important to have a place to go inside and escape the heat and humidity. The easiest place to do this is in a persons own home, provided it is equipped with an air conditioner or central air. Those without AC can find shelter from the heat by visiting with friends who do, or by spending the hottest part of the day at a library, shopping mall or movie theater.

Its a good idea to limit outdoor activity during the day to the morning and late evening hours, when temperatures outside are cooler and the suns rays are less intense. The hours of strongest sunlight are between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

It is important to recognize the signs of heat stroke and watch for them, especially for older people. Heat stoke is an advanced form of hyperthermia, unusually high body temperature, and it can be fatal if left untreated. Seek immediate medical attention if you or someone you are with is experiencing disorientation or confusion, has skin that is dry and flushed, is not sweating, has nausea or vomiting, is lethargic or excessively tired, has a headache, is breathing heavy or has a rapid pulse, or faints. In addition to getting medical help, get the person experiencing any of these symptoms out of the heat and place ice packs on their body.

Because high temperatures and exposure to the sun can be dangerous for older adults, it is important that they let family or friends know when they will be outside for extended periods of time, even if its only going for a walk or working in the garden. It is also a good idea to check in on older loved ones or neighbors to make sure they are keeping cool and coping with the heat. If their home is not air conditioned, take them to a place that is.

Seniors should also talk to their doctors about the side effects of any medications they might be taking that could make them more sensitive to UV rays or medications that become less effective if stored at higher temperatures.

Full-time mum-of-two Anna Jones, 30, from Walsall has lost 2.11 stone since lockdown started, having been left shocked by her recent holiday photos - while growing terrified at the dire news about obesity.

It's taken her from 15.2 (and a BMI of 33, which is classed as obese), down to 12.5.

She says: "I started a diet a couple of days before lockdown. We arrived back from Lanzarote, I looked at my holiday photos and that was it Even while I was there I wasnt comfortable, I wasnt happy, and I just thought this is it.

I was getting very breathless on holiday. Ive got two young children and they were wanting to run off everywhere.

I was sitting in seats at bars and thinking, God these chairs are quite small. I was kidding myself really.

But I didnt realise how big I was. It was total denial.

When trying new clothes on, you'd think, oh the sizes must be getting smaller in the shops, or all my clothes are shrinking.

Im not following a set diet plan, Im just doing what I feel works for me cutting out fat and carbs, and almost all alcohol. Its a high protein diet really.

Every Sunday I have a cheat day with my roast beef dinner and Yorkshire puddings, with a gin instead of wine.

I used to have wine most days... Im not proud saying that. You get into a rut, drinking too much then when Id have a few wines Id think, oh Im hungry now.

Id said to my husband before, I cant look at the scales. I want you to look and write it doesnt each week, but dont tell me.

I only plucked up the courage to look at my start weight recently. I thought, if I saw a really big, depressing number, Id just go out, grab a couple of bottles of wine and drink my troubles away.

Seeing the news [about a possible link between obesity and increased coronavirus risk] recently has been very, very scary for me.

Ive got two little kids so its important I look after myself.

I was 11 stone a few years ago on my birthday, and I remember feeling really good, so that's my goal now.

Losing what I have has already massively increased my self-confidence. I pay more attention to my hair and make-up now, because I think its worth it.

Before I felt a mess, no matter what I did.

Everyone needs that moment when they think, enough is enough. Ive done it in lockdown, so anyone can do it.

Theres never been a more important time than now.

Retired NHS health visitor Cherry Hope, 57, from Perth in Scotland has lost 2.8 stone in lockdown with Weight Watchers.

She had hit more than 19 stone (with a BMI over 40) and realised she needed to make a drastic change - not only for herself, but for her former colleagues working tirelessly on the frontline. She's now hit 16.8.

She says: "Like a lot of people, Ive never liked being fat or embraced it what a load of rubbish!

Ive been in the NHS since I was 17 and up until I had the kids, I was pretty sporty and reasonably slim. But it all went to hell when I had the kids.

Its really off when youre in a position of advising people about health and you think, Im carrying a good few stones over myself. It was ridiculous.

It was kind of a thunderbolt for me. If you get really sick because youve chosen to be fat and greedy, you bring it on yourself!

You get these images of these horrifically, morbidly obese people on TV, having to get their walls knocked down, rolling around, they cant lie down because theyll squash their own necks

You start thinking about your own morbidity.

The thing that did it for me was reading about the vulnerable groups during Covid. Its no great shock that those with a BMI of 40 or above are going to fare worse, overweight people are worse in every sphere.

It was kind of a thunderbolt for me. If you get really sick because youve chosen to be fat and greedy, you bring it on yourself!

For me, my husband is still working in a medical centre every day, so thats a concern too.

Given my age and being so heavy, my joints hurt youre just aware. Its like carrying round sacks on your back.

I was so aware of people who are younger and fitter succumbing to caveat problems or even dying and Id think, this is just stupid. Its preventable.

I have MS as well, its very mild, but it means Im one of Boris 12-week self-isolation lot. It's not directly connected to my weight but it makes moving very difficult if you have bouts of pain.

Im massively fortunate that I could retire when I did. Ive got colleagues just a little younger than me that dont have that option.

Hearing what theyve had to face [is awful]. People are still dying of this virus and the threat of what they could easily contract, plus coming home to their families I dont know how Id have managed if Id still been working.

As far as my story goes, there was no mystery about it. I'd eat everything [but it was] generally portion control, thats always a problem.

Im also a sweetie person. I used to adore cakes and bits like that.

I used to have some wine and then Id snack on a family bag of crisps. Then Id have my curry or whatever, and then dessert.

Breakfast would always be buttery toast... It would be like watching a master plasterer plastering it all over it you could see my teeth marks. Id leave teeth impressions for a CSI team, they could identify me by my toast!

Now Ive turned it round, I've cut out alcohol and Im exercising all the time and the weights just falling off. Im cross at myself that I didnt get a grip a while back.

The Weight Watchers people have been so incredibly encouraging and supportive. The app is a wonderful gadget, and I've experienced my whole journey so far virtually."

Hazel Evans, 29, from Gloucestershire has lost 4 stone on the 1:1 Diet since starting it in January - a great chunk of which has been during lockdown.

She says: "Ive wanted to lose weight for a long time, Ive probably been overweight for a good 15 years.

Id actually been offered some money towards weight loss surgery by a family member, but I wanted to try this first. The 1:1 diet really stood out to me and its meant Ive avoided that now.

Im now at the lowest I have been since 15 years ago, when I was at school.

I was borderline morbidly obese and now Im just overweight, its brilliant.

It's been so easy, Ive got a consultant, Ive had deliveries straight to my door of my products, we do virtual weigh ins, and there's a private Facebook group.

Seeing the news motivates me so much more too. Its something Ive thought about quite a lot, because knowing Im not in that category anymore is such a relief.

Ive managed to change that so quickly and so easily, Id urge anybody to do it. My risk has immediately been lowered.

I feel so much more confident too. Im actually a hairdresser, so I spend all day every day making everyone else look beautiful and feel fantastic, and Ive kind of almost faked that myself.

Its yet another boring day at the space station. You check your holographic wrist-watch, and you finally get excited: in 10 minutes youre supposed to have a delicious lunch of turkey in a toothpaste tube, with a side of telomere-enhancing pills. You get too excited though, and accidentally open the hatch to the airlock. Seconds later you find yourself floating through space with no spacesuit, wearing just the typical astronaut pajamas. Boy, did you mess up big time!

Although youve seen all the Sci-Fi movies, as a trained astronaut, you actually know better. No, you wont explode and your blood wont boil. But that doesnt mean its pretty. Far from it! If youre lucky maybe if you have a good 15 seconds to do something before you lose consciousness.

As youre drifting through space, the flow of time grinds to a crawl. You begin to remember your training and what those NASA nerds explained would happen in the unlikely event that one ends up hurled in space without a spacesuit.

When on Earth, the weight of the air around us pushes against the body. In turn, the pressure inside our body pushes back against the weight of the air pressing the skin. The result is a state of perfect balance.

However, space is virtually vacuum, which means that any person unfortunate enough to find their self unshielded in such an environment will experience rapid internal decompression. They wont explode, though and you have our skin to thank.

The largest organ in the human body, the skin, is extremely flexible and tough. Therefore, it is able to expand without spilling its contents.

Yet, this doesnt mean that the experience is pleasant. The body will expand to roughly twice its volume because the water in the tissue will rapidly turn into water vapour. This action will also push against internal organs. For instance, air expansion in the gut will push against the diaphragm and heart. As air is rapidly expelled out of the lungs, there might be some damage to the delicate tissue the lines the lungs and the airways.

The sudden loss of pressure will also cause decompression sickness due to bubbles of nitrogen in the muscles and bones, as well as the lack of oxygen, known as hypoxia. In fact, it is the loss of oxygen that will kill you first.

The worst thing one could do in a situation when youre flung into space is to hold their breath. If you do this, bubbles of air will be forced into the bloodstream, eventually arriving in the brain where they will cause a stroke. Holding your breath will also expose the lungs to the force of atmospheric-pressure air against pure vacuum, likely rupturing quickly. This can happen to scuba divers if they descend too quickly into deep waters.

Even if you breathe normally, you wont have time for much else, though. Starved of oxygen, the brain will enter safe mode to conserve energy about 15 seconds after being exposed to the vacuum of space. But even though the unfortunate astronaut might be unconscious, theyre not dead yet. That happens around the two-minute mark when all the other organs fail from oxygen deprivation.

There are quite a few instances of vacuum-induced hypoxia that we know of. In 1982, a technician who was running tests on a vacuum chamber was accidentally exposed to extremely low pressure, equivalent to 3.6% of sea-level atmospheric pressure. He spent a full minute in these conditions until he was pulled out. His skin turned blue, the lips were frothing, and there was bleeding from the lungs. The man recovered fully not long after, but others who suffered accidents in vacuum chambers werent so lucky and died due to prolonged exposure.

When the International Space Station faces the sun, the external temperature is around 121 C (250 F). When the sun is blocked by Earth, the temperature around the space station hovers around -157 C (-250 F).

At face value, any of these temperatures sound horrific. A spacesuit-less human just outside the space station would surely either boil alive or get turned into a popsicle in under a minute, right? However, youre thinking of heat transfer on Earth.

In space, there is no air, so heat cant be transferred through conduction (direct contact between two objects) or convection (energy transfer through a fluid like water or air). The only viable means of heat transfer between two objects in this case the human body and space that youre left with is radiation.

Humans radiate heat at a rate of only 100 Watts, much like an incandescent light bulb. Given the sheer mass of the human body, it will take a long time before you freeze. Other things would have killed you long before this happens.

Its been a full second since you stupidly flung yourself outside the space station, basically bare naked in space. During this time, your mind went into overdrive. You remember from your training that you shouldnt hold your breath, nor that your body will explode, boil, or instantly turn into a popsicle as you see in the movies. The thought of missing turkey also creeps to mind.

Now, you have approximately 14 seconds left before youll get knocked out. You decide to put this little time to good use and immediately make quick taps on your wristwatchs holographic display and alert the rest of the crew on the space station. Black out.

You slowly open your eyes which hurt badly due to the evaporation of water inside the ocular tissue and are greeted by the familiar face of the captain of the mission crew. Another 5 seconds and you wouldve been done for, she retorts. Good thing we got your message and used the stations telescopic arm to pull you back in right on time.

Lesson learned. Always wear protection!

TURNING the hospital air conditioning up to full blast, Victoria Jackson sighed as the sweat poured from her skin.

Not many 26-year-olds have to deal with the menopause - but hot flushes and night sweats are something she has got used to.

Victoria, from Maghaberry, Co Antrim., was diagnosed with bowel cancer, which had spread to her ovaries and abdominal cavity last year.

Her only option was radical surgery to cut away a third of her bowel and a full hysterectomy - forcing her into early menopause.

Fewer than one in ten people survive bowel cancer if it's picked up at stage 4, but detected quickly, more than nine in ten patients will live five years or longer.

Early diagnosis is key, which is why The Sun launched the No Time 2 Lose campaign - to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease, to empower everyone to check themselves.

The mum-of-one started suffering with bouts of diarrhoea and stomach cramps after every meal in summer 2018.

Initially she didnt want to bother her GP partly because she didntwant to waste the doctors time and partly because she felt embarrassedabout her toilet troubles.

Instead her unpredictable bowels became a running joke in herhousehold.

My eight-year-old son George would ask Wheres Mummy? So my hubby Simon would reply Where do you think? Shes on the loo again'.

We just didnt think it could be anything serious at my age.

I didnt want to sit in front of my male doctor and tell him I was pooing all the time

But as the months past, Victorias condition became more and moredebilitating.

It was affecting my whole life. Whenever we went anywhere I was always looking for the nearest loo," she said.

"I had a couple of near misses and had to run out of meetings at work a few times.

George plays football and the Portaloos at the side of the pitch can be pretty unpleasant, so Id deliberately not eat before his matches so I wouldnt get caught short.

At my worst, I was running to the loo up to 12 times a day.

After about six months Victoria made an appointment with her GP, but was told her problems were down to haemorrhoids and given some cream.

I didnt question it, I was just relieved to have an answer, says Victoria, now 27.

It had been hard enough to sit in front of a doctor and tell her I was pooing all the time.

I was a busy mum to George and Id just got married to my hubbySimon.

I was brushing my tummy troubles under the carpet. We all know the NHS is under pressure, I didnt want to bother them with something silly like my toilet habits.

But I was still in so much pain, sometimes I couldnt even zip up myjeans.

"As the symptoms persisted Simon and my mum Joan keptpushing me to go back.

Eventually, in March 2019, a locum GP referred Victoria to Belfasts Ulster Hospital for a sigmoidoscopy examination, where an endoscope camera is used to view the bowel.

By this time, she was finding large amounts of blood in her stools.

Her procedure was scheduled for Mothers Day, 2019.

What are the red-flag bowel cancer signs?

While screening is one way of ensuring early diagnosis, there are things everyone can do to reduce their risk of the deadly disease.

Being aware of the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer, spotting any changes and checking with your GP can prove a life-saver.

If you notice any of the signs, don't be embarrassed and don't ignore them. Doctors are used to seeing lots of patients with bowel problems.

The five red-flag symptoms of bowel cancer include:

In some cases bowel cancer can block the bowel, this is known as a bowel obstruction.

She said: After the scan, the doctor immediately asked if Simon could come in to join us.

Hed been sitting out in the waiting room. Thats when I knew it was bad news.

The doctor said hed need to do a biopsy to be sure, but hed found a huge mass almost completely blocking my bowel. He couldnt get the camera past it.

He said that in his opinion it was cancer.

I couldnt believe it, I was too young for bowel cancer."

The doctor told me it meant I couldnt have any more children

But an MRI and CT scans brought more bad news - the cancer had alreadyspread beyond the bowel to both of Victorias ovaries and lymph nodes.

Her only option was surgery to cut away a third of her bowel and give her a full hysterectomy.

The doctor told me it meant I couldnt have any more children, she says.

I think he expected me to freak out, but I just told him it was more important that I stay alive for the son I already have.

Simon is 40 and has other children from a previous relationship, sowed already talked about not having any more kids. My survival wasmuch more important.

Victoria underwent surgery on May 3, 2019, and surgeons found evidence of cancer cells in her peritoneum the fluid in her abdominal cavity.

That was the most worrying bit, she explains.

They couldnt remove that during the operation so we had to hope that the chemo would kill it.

She began 12 gruelling cycles of chemotherapy.

She was prescribed HRT, but warned that her menopause was on its way.

I didnt know what to expect, she says. My friends were all talkingabout babies no one my age has any clue about the menopause.

Soon I was waking up at night, and breaking into sweats for noreason.

I didnt know which of my symptoms were due to the chemotherapy and which to the menopause.

"Thankfully this particular chemo drug hasnt made me lose my hair, but it has brought me out in an acne rash all over my face and chest.

One day I was sat in my hospital room during a chemo session, withthe air con on full blast, and a nurse came in and said brrrrrrrr itsfreezing in here!

I was like Really? Im boiling! The sweats lashing off me!

The nurse said Oh, thatll be your menopause. Thats when the penny finally dropped.

Victoria, who works in community development for Lisburn andCastlereagh City Council, is now on targeted hormone therapy and isawaiting the results of her latest scan.

She and Simon have told George that there is a 'bug in mummystummy called cancer' and she is taking 'special medicine to fix it'.

Victoria is telling her story because she wants to raise awareness ofearly bowel cancer symptoms in younger patients.

Ive lost all my embarrassment now, she laughs. After everythingthats happened to me, I could talk about poo all day.

"If somethings not right with your toilet habits, get it checked out.

If Id caught my cancer earlier then it might not have spread and Imight not have needed a hysterectomy.

Also dont be afraid to ask for a second opinion if you have worryingsymptoms and your GP isnt taking you seriously.

Victorias mum Joan Brown, 60, said: Bowel cancer isnt talked about as much as some other cancers and we just assume it mainly affects older people.

If Victoria had been diagnosed sooner she might have had more treatment options.

There are two ways to ensure early diagnosis - screening and awareness.

In the UK, bowel cancer is one of three screening programmes, alongside breast and cervical cancers.

But, Brits are subjected to a bowel cancer screening postcode lottery.

In Scotland, screening starts at 50 - yet in England, Wales and Northern Ireland people have to wait until their 60th birthdays to be invited for screening.

That's why The Sun launched the No Time 2 Lose campaign in April 2018 - to call on the Government to lower the screening age to 50.

Experts predict the move could save around 4,500 lives every year.

In the summer of 2018, health secretary Matt Hancock announced screening in England would be lowered to 50 - marking a victory for The Sun and campaigners, including Lauren Backler, who lost her mum Fiona to the disease aged just 53.

Genevieve Edwards, chief executive of Bowel Cancer UK, said: Were so grateful to Victoria for sharing her story and highlighting the importance of visiting a doctor with bowel cancer symptoms as soon as possible.

"Bowel cancer is the UKs second biggest cancer killer, but its treatable and curable, especially when diagnosed and treated early.

GPs see patients with bowel concerns every day, so you shouldnt be embarrassed to visit them if you have symptoms like bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo, a persistent and unexplained change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss, extreme tiredness for no obvious reason and a pain or lump in your tummy.

Were concerned right now that the coronavirus pandemic has stopped many people with bowel cancer symptoms contacting their doctor, because they dont want to burden the NHS at this time of crisis, or are worried about catching coronavirus by leaving the house.

"But if you have any of the symptoms of bowel cancer please contact your GP as soon as possible.

In the Face of American ‘Truth Decay,’ Polls Shed Light on How Much Families Are Hurting During COVID-19 – The 74

These days, after months of grinding pandemic drudgery, its easy to focus on whats different. Walk, mask pulled tight, past your boarded-up neighborhood hangout and sigh at the prospect of another night of your own cooking. Gaze, longingly, at your friends driveway and sigh at lost game nights and barbecues. Flip on your television and see that, while the Tigers arent 10 games below .500 yet, thats only because Major League Baseball never got out of spring training.

But at its core, the current crisis isnt a divergence from the norm its an enhancement. So much of the coronavirus era is our reality, just a little more so. For at least a decade, the country has struggled with what experts call truth decay, as basic facts lose their ability to hold sway in public debates. Truth decay advances when humans sort the facts before them to suit their preferences. Cant face the complaints protesters are raising about polices excessive use of force against African Americans? These days, you can find yourself a whole TV network that will reassure you that the real problem is the complaints themselves.

Ours is a country where reliable information on major public issues was already scarce, but the current crisis elevates the consequences of this dynamic. COVID-19 has raised the stakes. Elevation of fact-free theories about the coronaviruss spread and untested treatments like hydroxychloroquine and disinfectant have cost American lives.

Public education is not immune to this dynamic. As schools have shuttered and teachers have scrambled to hustle forth distance learning lessons for their students, some folks in the education world have sought to take advantage of the crisis to advance their own ends. Most notably, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has sought to use emergency public education funds to support private schools but shes hardly alone.

Everyone is opining about whats best for kids this spring, summer and fall, even though most of us are stuck at home with limited information about how kids in other homes are actually experiencing this moment. Everyone is searching for best practices for serving students in our current moment, even though its far too early for anyone to know whats working during this unplanned, nearly three-month experiment.

Fortunately, polling data from students and families are starting to roll in those are as close as well get to facts about the current moment until schools are able to reliably administer assessments again. Theyre not perfect guides, but theyre better than gazing at Twitter and deciding that we were right about tests, online learning, and/or early education, etc., all along.

So, how are families feeling about how schools are doing?

How is online learning going?

The research on virtual learning even when its carefully crafted and steadily resourced is discouraging. Is there any hope for our current hodgepodge of hastily assembled onscreen campuses?

Polling suggests that many parents arent confident. In mid-May, a Boston Public Schools survey found that over one-third of families report that they need the district to do more to make online learning work for students. Similarly, in its annual statewide poll of families views on the states education system, while the Public Policy Institute of California found that over 90 percent of families approve of how their schools are responding to the pandemic, it also found that around 30 percent of families are very concerned about how well kids are learning while schools are closed. Another 34 percent are somewhat concerned.

Also in California, the Parent Institute for Quality Educations recent polling found that 20 percent of families report lacking technology to access online learning and around one-third report having no email address. Nearly 80 percent of parents of students with disabilities say that they dont know if their students are receiving the services they need. Similarly, 45 percent of parents of English-learning students say their children are not receiving the language instruction they need.

Meanwhile, in an April poll conducted by the Education Trust-West and other California organizations , about 70 percent of California parents of children under the age of 5 report that their kids are spending more time using screen technology like tablets (a similar percentage report increased time watching TV). Its not clear that theyre feeling confident about this, however. Huge majorities each over 90 percent report that it would be helpful to receive examples and online resources for supporting their childrens development. Similar percentages of parents also say they need better access to the internet.

How are families faring?

If families are uncertain about their childrens progress while everyones staying home, thats also because the public-health crisis is intensifying the pressures kids face. Around 1 in 5 Boston families report facing housing instability during the crisis, and 1 in 7 has struggled to get enough food. Similarly, 30 percent of young California families report using public meal offerings, but fully 90 percent say that it would be useful to have access to food supports. Nearly 40 percent anticipate having trouble paying for food, housing, or health care if things dont get back to normal soon.

A Raising New York poll of families of young children published at the end of April found similarly high rates of parental worry about food, housing and other key expenses during the pandemic. Consequently, over two-thirds of respondents express concerns about the impact on their childrens development.

What next?

Its clear, as some of us have been insisting, that theres no way to honestly talk about a global pandemic as an opportunity. The immediate suffering of the crisis is immense, and we still havent yet begun to unpack the long-term consequences for students learning and well-being. This is a catastrophe for many children and their families, and its still a major hurdle for even the most privileged.

On the one hand, these data suggest that schools cant reopen soon enough. Children are suffering in lonely isolation, learning loss is a real concern, and families are gasping under the combined weight of child care, work and/or financial pressures. This is especially true now that, as Ive written before, schools are so much more than hosting sites for academic lessons many also serve as delivery sites for a wide range of social services. Its compelling logic: Get kids back to school so the adults in their lives can get back to work and everything can get as quickly back to some semblance of normal.

But, on the other hand, these pressing facts arent the only ones in play. Again, schools arent inoculated against the broader contexts in which they operate. When armed protesters storm statehouses insisting that governors reopen the economy, theyre really insisting that employers be freed to demand that employees work. But employees cant work if they dont have a safe place to send their children. Which is to say that, translated from fevered rhetoric into concrete actions, reopening the economy really means forcing children and teachers to schools before the coronavirus has been sufficiently contained.

In the wake of more than 2 million reported COVID-19 cases and nearly 114,000 deaths, and amid new risks from the virus for kids, public-health concerns shouldnt be suspended. It should go without saying that fantastical proposals to impose social distancing rules on boisterous elementary schoolers (to say nothing of amorous adolescents) should be scrapped before they get off the ground.

So: Distance learning cant deliver what kids need. Kids are desperate for the academic and social connections that schools offer. Families need child care help and the wide range of services schools provide. But unless were willing to tolerate constant health risks for children, parents, teachers and lets be honest all of us, campuses cant reopen until the virus is much better contained.

Thats not a pleasant fact, but its a fact nonetheless.

There's one effective, equipment-free exercise that almost anyone can take up: Running!

Adaptable, versatile and fairly easy to start, running can help lose weight, especially when combined with a healthy diet. TODAY spoke to two nutritionists to find the best way to combine running with diet to reach your fitness goals.

According to Natalie Rizzo, a New York City-based registered dietitian who works with "everyday athletes," running is a great way to lose weight since it burns a lot of calories quickly.

"You're burning more calories per minute" with running than you are with strength training or cycling, Rizzo said.

Kristin Kirkpatrick, a dietitian and the manager of wellness nutrition services at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, added that the amount of calories you burn running can vary based on how long or intense your workout does, and said that diet plays a huge role in making the exercise effective.

"My husband's a trail runner, he will go out for a run and run 15 or 20 miles out in the mountains," Kirkpatrick explained. "So that is very high intensity. If you're doing something like that, the chances of losing weight are pretty high, but if you're just someone who walks out the front door and runs three miles, that might not be enough for weight loss if your diet is still lousy."

"One of the main goals, when it comes to weight loss, is that you want to burn calories," Rizzo explained. "That has to go hand in hand with good nutrition."

The problem with suddenly increasing the amount of exercise you do, Rizzo said, is that people frequently think they are burning more calories than they are, and overcompensate when it comes to diet.

"It's really easy to overeat," she explained. "You're going to feel hungry when you're just starting to run ... Just because you're running and you're working out doesn't necessarily mean you can eat whatever you want. It really has to be a combination of exercise and diet. Eating healthy is generally what's going to make your weight loss goals happen."

"Diet will almost always trump exercise," said Kirkpatrick.

Combine running with a healthy diet to create a calorie deficit, which Rizzo said is what "really makes weight loss goals happen." A calorie deficit essentially means that you are burning more calories than you consume, so it's important to fill your diet with lower-calorie foods that make you feel full.

"You want to make sure that you're still eating a healthy diet and following recovery nutrition tactics," Rizzo said. "Look for foods that have hunger-fighting properties in them. That's generally energy-dense foods like fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains, beans and things like that. Pack your plate with those. It's going to keep you from overeating things you don't necessarily want."

Kirkpatrick said that you might have to adjust your diet a bit to make sure you are getting the nutrients you need, especially if you're running a lot.

"An average person running three to four miles a day doesn't necessarily need to come from a run and immediately re-fuel," she said. "You can probably have normal meals and snacks as you typically would. If you're doing five or six miles, you're probably going to have to have some sort of simple sugar to refuel with, and of course water and electrolytes. Complex carbohydrates and lean sources of protein are always a great option."

Rizzo recommends using "the right kind of fuel" to make sure your body is supported by your diet, but you don't overeat.

"Generally, think about food as fuel for a workout," Rizzo said. "One of the main issues that I see with runners, in terms of losing weight, is that they want fuel for their workouts, which a lot of times requires eating a decent amount of carbs and things that they've been taught are not necessarily the best foods for weight loss. It's almost like they're fighting with themselves on figuring out what to eat."

If you do decide to start incorporating running into your weight-loss journey, Rizzo recommends starting slowly and carefully to avoid any injury.

"You want to make sure you have the right form," she said. "And that you don't go out to fast. That can be as simple as Googling the right form. Make sure you're landing on a flat foot, that your arms are at your sides and not crossing in front of your body, because having the wrong form can really lead to difficult injuries."

If you're going to be running a lot, make sure that you have decent running shoes, says Rizzo, because improper footwear can lead to shin splints.

"Another thing that can lead to injuries is going out too fast and trying to train too much," Rizzo explained, adding that people should try to combine running with other forms of exercise like strength training.
