HCG: Diet Dilemma

Posted on: 10:00 pm, May 1, 2012, by Elise Morgan, updated on: 10:45pm, May 1, 2012

HCG has been grabbing the attention of dieters around the world with promises of dropping pounds quickly. But with the promises also come a lot of questions about whether its effective and safe.

HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin and is produced by pregnant women. Its supposed to release fat from your body so you can use it as fuel, meaning you need fewer calories and lose less muscle mass.

Huntsville resident Kylie Smith is a big fan of HCG. She had tried a number of other products, many making her shaky and uncomfortable. She thought shed give HCG a try after her friend had luck on the diet. Kylie got her HCG through a diet practitioner. She took drops three times a day and was only allowed a 500 calorie diet from a very specific menu. But she says she was never hungry. I felt great! I felt it was more like a cleanse. Kylie adds, I woke up in the morning before my alarm; I wasnt tired. Kylie lost 40 pounds in a year.

But not everyone is sold on the benefits of HCG. Todd Foreman is a Bariatric Surgeon in the Huntsville area. He says, As a surgeon who doesnt prescribe it, I dont believe theres any evidence that it works well. Foreman goes on to say, I think that most of the HCG thats on the market is not really the hormone that is known as HCG. Foreman says its a homeopathic mix of herbs and other supplements, which is sold as HCG.

The FDA agrees. HCG is FDA approved to treat infertility, but not as a weight loss supplement. Just last December, the FDA and the Federal Trade Commission issued seven letters to companies marketing over-the-counter HCG products labeled as homeopathic for weight loss. The letters warn the companies theyre violating federal law by selling drugs that have not been approved and are making unsupported claims.

Dr. Zach LaBoube has a franchise that uses HCG to help patients lose weight and says theres a big difference between the prescription and homeopathic HCG.

LaBoube explains, The prescription HCG is compounded at pharmacies across the country. Its a bioidentical hormone which means its an exact replica of the real HCG thats produced by a pregnant woman.

LaBoube says the homeopathic version is much weaker. He says its a combination of small concentrations of the HCG hormone and then, generally, a combination of B vitamins and other things that spark the metabolism a bit.He says, Theyre two completely different products.

You can go to your local Walmart and find homeopathic HCG on the shelves. You can also find it all over the internet, but you dont always know whats in it.

Coffee Beans Help Shed Pounds: Scientists

A worker inspects unroasted coffee beans, which may assist with weight loss.

People looking to slim down might find solace in a natural product: Green, unroasted coffee beans.

Scientists announced on Tuesday in San Diego that they have found evidence unroasted coffee beans can produce a substantial decrease in body weight in a relatively short period of time.

Meaning: The green beans could quickly help people lose more weight.

The American Chemical Society performed a study involving 16 overweight or obese people between 22 and 26 years old in a little less than six months. It was a study in which people cycled through the two doses and the placebo, each for six weeks. There was a low-extract bean dose of 700mg and a higher dose of 1,050mg.

Participants were monitored for their overall diet and exercise during the study. Ultimately, they averaged a loss of 17 pounds, including an average of a 16 percent decrease in body fat and 10 percent of their overall body weight.

Based on our results, taking multiple capsules of green coffee extract a day while eating a low-fat, healthful diet and exercising regularly appears to be a safe, effective, inexpensive way to lose weight, Dr. Joe Vinson of ACS said.

He noted that weight loss might have been significantly faster, except that participants received the placebo and the lower dose of green coffee extract for part of the study period.

Vinson believes the chlorogenic acids in the bean are responsible for the weight loss. Its properties exist in the unroasted coffee beans.

Weight-loss surgery may be best cure for diabetes

Weight-loss surgery may be best cure for diabetes March 26th, 2012, 12:13 pm posted by Courtney Perkes

Two studies published Monday in the New England Journal of Medicine have found that bariatric weight-loss surgery can reverse diabetes in obese patients far more effectively than medication and lifestyle coaching alone.

In summary, the studies showed some dramatic results, including patients who could stop taking insulin only days after surgery, even before losing large amounts of weight.

Dr. Peter LePort, bariatric surgeon at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, estimated that 25 to 35 percent of his patients have type 2 diabetes.

A significant portion of my patients come in not only because theyre heavy but they say, I have to get rid of my hypertension, my diabetes, my back pain and thats motivating them more than the weight loss, LePort said. The significant thing here is gastric bypass seems to get rid of diabetes very quickly even before they lose all the weight.

LePort said he would like to see research on if gastric surgery can cure diabetes in patients who are not morbidly obese.

In one study, patients at the Cleveland Clinic who underwent stomach-shrinking surgeries were compared with those who took medication and received intensive lifestyle and weight loss coaching. After a year, the surgery patients had lost more weight and many were able to control their blood sugar without medication.

The authors wrote, We conclude that bariatric surgery represents a potentially useful strategy for management of uncontrolled diabetes, since it has been shown to eliminate the need for diabetes medications in some patients and to markedly reduce the need for drug treatment in others.

In the other study at Catholic University in Rome, patients who underwent surgery were also compared to those who didnt. For those who had surgery, the remission rate from diabetes was up to 95 percent. As in the other study, the surgery patients also lost more weight.

Jockeys in dieting 'extreme measures'

20 March 2012 Last updated at 10:19 ET

Heading to a sauna before a race is a common ritual for many jockeys - not to relax, but to lose those few extra pounds before racing.

Racing legends including Frankie Dettori have spoken in interviews of their battles to stay under their "natural weight".

Tony McCoy, who stands at 5ft 10in tall, has been known in the past to slim down for some rides to 10 stone, a stone-and-a-half below his natural weight, with a punishing diet of saunas and snatched snacks.

A recent academic study found 82% of the 99 jockeys surveyed took "extreme measures" when dieting, ranging from exercising with "sweat suits" to fasting, skipping meals or vomiting before a race.

The Berkshire-based Professional Jockeys Association is now employing three extra members of staff to help stop jockeys using dangerous methods to lose weight.

Anna-Louise MacKinnon, medical advisor at the association, based in Newbury, said they had recruited three new members to their nutrition team to bring new ideas and approaches to diet.

She said there was no "hard evidence" that rapid weight loss methods were dangerous, but said anecdotally she had been told by jockeys that head injuries and concussions were harder to recover from when the rider was dehydrated.

She said there were also concerns about dehydration weight-loss methods leading to a lack of concentration which might lead to more accidents while riding.

Susan Lennie, a lecturer in nutrition at Robert Gordon University, warned that jockeys could damage their health by losing too much too quickly.

BalanceDiet™ Company Acquires Results Weight Loss and 1-800-Weight-Loss

TAMPA, Fla., March 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --BalanceDiet Company announces the acquisition of Results Weight Loss, a regional chain of weight-management centers with locations throughout southwest Florida. The acquisition includes the assets and clients of Results Weight Loss as well as the affiliated 1-800-Weight-Loss brand, immediately adding 16 new locations, thousands of customers and exclusive genetic testing to the BalanceDiet portfolio and solidifying the company's dominant presence in the Florida weight-loss marketplace.

The previous owners of Results Weight Loss, facing foreclosure, had handed the business over to creditors in December 2011. Less than a day before the chain of diet centers was scheduled to cease operations, BalanceDiet's Board acted quickly to assume ownership of the company.

"We rescued the company from closure within a 12-hour window, and had only a half-day to make a final decision on the acquisition. However, we determined that this move offered significant advantages for the continuing expansion of our BalanceDiet brand," said Christopher Palumbo, Brand Founder. "We believe in wellness, we believe in the industry, and we believe in the West Florida markets. It was apparent that a fresh approach, new products, and updated services could really take this company and bring much-needed momentum to the business."

BalanceDiet plans to rebrand, expand, and renovate the former Results Weight Loss locations and incorporate additional services, which will be rolled out with the grand reopening of the centers. Through its timely acquisition of Results Weight Loss, BalanceDiet preserved the jobs of 100 employees and is supporting another 300 jobs for vendors and service providers. The acquisition also ensured that the company's several thousand customers would not lose the money they had paid for its services, as BalanceDiet is honoring clients' plans and lowering the prices.

"It is very rewarding and exciting to be involved in a comeback story like this," remarked Palumbo. "When you have a great team backing you, you are more confident in taking risks. Our strategic acquisition has enabled us to add exclusive genetic testing to a variety of new services that complement BalanceDiet's existing product and service offerings, ultimately delivering an enhanced wellness experience to our customers."

BalanceDiet is a premium diet and wellness brand that operates a chain of stylish, upscale weight-loss centers as well as the BalanceDiet At Home service. Kerrie faded to 35kg

AT one point during her battle with coeliac disease, Wodonga woman Kerrie Winnetts weight plummeted to a mere 35kilograms.

For more than 25 years she had experienced excessive weight loss and tiredness that was wrongly diagnosed until 2001.

It has taken the past 10 years for her to reach a normal weight and learn to manage the debilitating illness.

I had no energy, I was flat out getting through a day, Mrs Winnett, 51, said.

I lost a lot of weight really quickly, people thought I was anorexic because I was so skinny.

Mrs Winnett was incorrectly diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and another doctor told her it was all in her head.

My mother had passed away the year before from bowel cancer, we were nursing her, so that was stressful, she said.

I went to the doctor and he said it was in my head and virtually told me to go away.

But a new doctor suspected something more serious.

She thought it was bowel cancer so she sent me for blood tests but it came back with coeliac, Mrs Winnett said.

Are carbohydrates really the enemy?

Are carbohydrates really the enemy? 08 Mar 2012

Sharon Hultzer

THE dieting world is certainly an ever-growing one with variations of extreme fads and diet methods repeating and reinventing themselves through the decades. Many self-professed lifetime dieters have developed strong views on what works and what doesnt work, what foods are friends versus which ones are foes. The ultimate aim of most weight-loss diets is to lose weight as quickly and painlessly as possible, often with little regard for long-term success and health. Options range from starving, to eating only fruit, to drinking only soups, to surviving on salads and water. Lately, the most spoken-about diet in the media is the high protein and fat, very low (or no) carbohydrate strategy.

What is the truth behind these weight-loss methods, and is there a one-size-fits-all option that guarantees success to everybody prepared to put in the effort?

Simply stated, weight loss requires that we put less fuel into our body than what we use. In other words, expending more energy than we eat will place us in a negative calorie balance forcing the body to use up its stored fuel sources. The frequently asked question is: Does it matter what fuel source we give the body? Should we eliminate certain sources completely and eat specific food groups to encourage speedier results?

As we have discussed before, people dont all respond the same way to the same dietary changes. Some people lose weight relatively easily when reducing fat in their diet, and others seem to lose weight best when reducing starchy foods. Our genetic make-up certainly plays a role, but the basics still remain. Our body needs a balance of all the main macronutrients to survive healthily. Completely eliminating any of these groups has serious health implications.

We need protein to build and repair muscles and cells on a daily basis. Carbohydrates are the essential source of glucose that our brain in particular needs to function, as well as an essential source of glycogen for powering our muscles. Fats are also needed to keep our cell walls healthy and to allow for adequate hormone production. All these macronutrients are used for a plethora of other functions this is simply a brief overview.

The most famous very low-carbohydrate diet is the Atkins diet. It allows eating as much protein and fat as required, while severely limiting all carbohydrate-containing foods, including starchy vegetables (such as butternut), potatoes, breads, crackers and even fruit. In the absence of adequate carbohydrate, the body burns up fat as a fuel source which is, of course, the attractive draw card. However, the fat is not broken down completely (as it would be in the presence of carbohydrate) and yields ketones and a state called ketosis. Prolonged ketosis causes the body to metabolise muscles, tissues and organs to find additional fuel. This can be damaging to the body, not to mention the associated feelings of weakness and tiredness. In the state of ketosis, the body loses a lot of water. This leads dieters to believe they are achieving weight loss, but it is not fat that is being lost and as soon as any carbohydrate is eaten, the water weight is quickly recovered.

While no-carbohydrate diets are dangerous and have not been shown to yield any better weight-loss results in the long term, there may be a place for adequately designed low-carbohydrate diets. It is possible to develop a lower carbohydrate diet that will ensure that the minimum-required carbohydrate is available to protect against muscle breakdown. This may be effective in certain individuals yielding a speedier weight loss initially.

This initial better result is short-lived however. Long-term follow-up studies show that similar weight-loss results are achieved after 12 months when following a diet containing moderate carbohydrate (what we would term a balanced diet). If you are going to attempt a low-carbohydrate diet, dont simply follow a general plan. Ensure that you plan it with your dietician to avoid dangerous complications.
