Why the timing of your breakfast can help you lose weight – The Telegraph

Breakfast should only be eaten after 11am in the morning, an expert has said.

Waiting a few hours before eating anything after waking up is better for staying healthy and shedding excess pounds, according to nutrition expert Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at Kings College London.

That is because most people now eat dinner much later in the evening than previous generations, and only stop eating around 9pm the night before.

Therefore, an 11am breakfast is the best way for a person to achieve 14 hours of fasting overnight, which growing evidence suggests is best for the metabolism.

Prof Spector told an audience at Cheltenham Science Festival: If you have a later breakfast, that will give you some benefits.

I think we have to rethink all the things we have been told are unhealthy, because theres just so much new science coming out.

Speaking after the talk, he said: There are still people, particularly in the north of England, who eat earlier, but generally we have moved towards continental eating habits, having dinner much later like people in Spain and Italy.

Even those who dont do that may end up snacking up until 9pm, making it difficult to achieve a 14-hour fasting period.

There is a simple change people can make by shifting their breakfast from 8am to 11am, which actually is more effective than more fashionable fasting diets like 5:2.

Intermittent fasting is a popular dieting technique where a person can eat whatever they want within a specific time period every day.

However, there has been much debate over its effectiveness and at what time of the day a person should eat and when they should stop.

A recent study found stopping eating earlier in the day, at 3pm, is more effective than eating into the evening, with people losing three pounds more over a five-week period.

But modern lifestyles can make this impossible, with long work hours and hefty commutes pushing tea time later into the evening.

And Prof Spector says this needs to be taken into account, and the compromise is that breakfast must be delayed and converted into more of a brunch than a meal at the crack of dawn.

Fasting for 14 hours a day, using a later breakfast, but overall eating the same amount, is easier to achieve long term, he said.

It works because the microbes in our gut have a circadian rhythm like us and need a rest period.

Studies suggest a later breakfast to achieve 14 hours of fasting could help people to lose four to 11 pounds of weight over several months of doing it.

Their microbes essentially become more efficient at burning food.

The expert said people who feel ravenous in the mornings, or fear becoming light-headed without an earlier breakfast, are likely to quickly adapt to a new routine.

Prof Spector is co-creator of the ZOE app which was used to help track Covid in the community, but also inspects a persons gut bacteria to find out what foods and diets would likely work best for them.

For example, he says in his book Spoon-Fed: Why Almost Everything Weve Been Told About Food Is Wrong, some people gain weight if they eat breakfast, with the morning consumption particularly treacherous to their waistline.

On breakfast, Prof Spector added: We know from our studies that everyone is different, and some people respond differently to high-carb and high-fat breakfasts, so it is important to understand that as well.

If you cant lose weight by eating less, these doctors may have the solution – BGR

If youve struggled to lose weight throughout the years, youve probably tried some form of low-calorie at some point. Whether or not you saw good results, doctors are now saying that low-calorie diets could actually be harmful to your body. So where does that leave you? Well, the answer may be in low-carb diets that help fuel weight loss, while also being sustainable.

For years, many doctors have preached about the benefits of low-calorie diets as a way to help fuel weight loss. However, now, new research says that those types of diets may actually slow your metabolism. Thus, making it more difficult to lose weight in the long run. As such, doctors have begun recommending low-carb diet options instead.

Where low-carb and low-calorie diets differ is that low-calorie diets require you to count the calories of the foods youre eating. As such, you have to be very limiting in how much you can eat of any given thing. With low carbs, though, you need to avoid foods that have large amounts of carbohydrates in them.

Diets like the keto diet follow this low-carb setup. Basically, you cut out heavy carb items like bread, pasta, and potatoes. From there, you watch how many carbs youre taking in by eating foods that offer lower amounts of them. Seems similar to low-calorie diets, right? Well, it is, but its also very different.

When youre counting calories, youre causing your body to fight back, Dr. David Ludwig, professor of nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health, explained to Today. It causes you to be hungry and even causes the body to slow down its metabolism to not burn through stored calories as quickly.

So, how does counting carbs help? According to Dr. Ludwig and his colleagues, a low-carb diet promotes weight loss by controlling your bodys insulin. When counting calories, you arent controlling your insulin. When insulin levels get too high, your fat cells are programmed to store calories. This keeps your bloodstream from becoming overloaded with them.

With low carb, though, youre controlling your insulin levels better. This allows your body to burn calories as needed, instead of storing them for later. Additionally, low-carb diets are more sustainable than low-calorie diets. Thereby making them better for weight loss if you stick with them.

Ultimately, you dont have to go for a low-carb diet as strict as keto to lose weight. However, Dr. Ludwig and his associates recommend speaking with your doctor to see if a more limited diet of carbs will help with your weight loss goals.

Slimmer lost over 5st and reversed diabetes diagnosis – ‘still have sweet treats’ – Express

Despite feeling confident in her body no matter what her size, after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Ogonna realised she had to make a change. Juggling her time between two countries and two hectic careers as a doctor in the UK and a baker in Nigeria, she was struggling to find balance and make her health a priority. But by adopting a range of healthier habits, Ogonna has now changed her relationship with food, taken back control of her work and family life and dropped more than five stone in the process. But how did she do it?

The mother-of-three wanted to make long-term lifestyle changes following her diagnosis, and while she found various diets helped her lose weight quickly, she soon realised they weren't sustainable.

"It never lasted," she admitted. "They never gave me the tools I needed to go forward and independently take control of my food habits and diet.

"Theyd tell me exactly what to eat, what exercise to do and what recipes to cook. They never taught me how to figure things out for myself, and how to build healthy habits that work for me. This, for me, is crucial to my success."

Ogonna openly admitted she has always been "quite mindless" when it comes to food, and it's probably a factor shared by many people in the same position.

"I never put too much thought into what I was eating," she explained.

READ MORE:Diet: Expert warns against common mistake

"In the bakery, I always had bread and sweet treats around me that I would pick at during the day. It wasnt exactly the healthiest!

"It was initially quite a struggle for me. At first, I wasnt too bothered about the weight gain. Ive always been quite comfortable with myself, whatever size I am, though I have tried dieting in the past."

There is a history of diabetes in Ogonna's family so she knew just how serious the diagnosis was.

She admitted: "The diagnosis hit me quite hard, knowing how its impacted my family members who have also had type 2 diabetes.

"And as a doctor, I started to really notice how daft all this was. It was the kick up the backside I needed!"

Ogonna decided to take the plunge and try Noom, a subscription-based app for tracking a person's food intake and exercise habits.

"I very quickly realised that it was different from other diets I had tried (and failed at)," she said.

"Other programmes told me to restrict myself from eating certain things, but Noom taught me how to have a healthier relationship with food while living normally."

While she admitted losing the weight was "a slower process" on the Room diet, it was definitely "the most consistent" she's kept the weight off.

"Its been more sustainable," she said, "not only that, but my biggest goal was to reverse my type 2 diabetes, which Ive now done."

Being more mindful of her eating than ever before, Ogonna doesn't punish herself if she slips up and doesn't feel guilty for enjoying her food.

"Not only have I lost over 5 stone, but I have a lot more energy now," she beamed.

"I can run after the kids and play with them for longer without feeling exhausted. I'm not as tired or rundown as I used to feel."

She continued: "My relationship with food has been transformed. I no longer see food as a reward, and I also dont feel like I have to deprive myself of anything.

"Through Noom, Ive learned what foods are good for me and will sustain me throughout the day to keep me full for longer.

"I can then find the balance between that and what I enjoy that isnt too filling. And I dont feel guilty if I go out for dinner or eat a sweet treat at my bakery.

"I'll just pick my favourite one and have a smaller portion. Im more mindful of my eating so I don't tend to go overboard anymore."

Not only has her relationship with food changed, but Ogonna has become a lot more active than she used to be.

"Before, I struggled to find the time to go to exercise classes or the gym because I thought my schedule wouldnt allow it. But now I make a conscious effort to take time for myself three or four times a week to keep fit," she explained.

"I do some weights in the gym or will go for long walks or cycles with my kids after school. Being a bit more mindful about it really helps create the opportunities to bring activities in without taking loads of time out of your day."

So, could I lose the pandemic pounds by eating…ready meals? – Evening Standard

T

he pandemic, for me, can largely be summed up in one word: wine. Oh, and burgers and pies, and that never-ending series about the staff of super yachts on Netflix, Below Deck. These things contrived to give me comfort and keep me sane but, most of all, they made me fat.

The process came in stages as imperceptible as the change in season when you are stuck inside. It started with a slight tightening of waistbands on my skinniest jeans, then to slight protuberances around the front of my tightest T-shirts and then, before I knew where I was, I hadnt so much put on some timber as become the timber merchant. Or, as a friend said, over some drinks, rather loose-lipped: What have they been feeding you? Soon all the clothes I had didnt fit and I was seriously considering purging the entirety of my pants drawer for larger models. I didnt, I should say, become dangerously obese but I did put on 2-2.5 stone. Plus, I really didnt want to have to buy a new wardrobe.

My normal plan to lose this weight would have been to run and run till there was nothing more to run off. The only problem was, I had hurt my ankle and so was as stationary as a beached whale. It was around this point that I came across Love Yourself meals. The west London based company was founded in 2018 out of a small test kitchen - and their business quadrupled during the pandemic. Now, they deliver all over the capital and the country, offering a range of freshly made, calorie-controlled ready-made menus delivered to your office or door by courier.

These arent the normal ready meals youd find in your supermarket fridge section. These are made fresh every day under the watchful eye of head chef Michal Snela (formerly of various Michelin-starred Marcus Wareing kitchens). There are different menus to choose from depending on what it is you want to achieve. They range from the cheapest option at 18 a day a mini diet which offers 2 or 3 meals a day totalling 800 calories which you can then top up with meals you cook for yourself to the more expensive 35 a day performance diet aimed at bodybuilders and athletes. They have a low-carb option, a vegetarian plan, as well as a halal plan, and a balanced option, which is more focussed on those who work long hours and simply want the convenience of not cooking from scratch. You can choose a single day per week delivery (useful for gym days), a five-day per week plan, or six out of seven days, so you can still cook for yourself if you like at the weekend. Most of the plans involve breakfast, lunch and dinner plus two snacks. Their target is clearly the busy city professional who has money but is usually knackered around dinner time.

Month one: shock to the system

So, which menu to choose? I availed myself of the in-house nutritionist at Love Yourself. After asking my aims (to fit into APC trousers!) and how I was generally feeling (like an overdone blancmange!), she was resolute in her advice. I recommend a twelve-week programme, Bettina said. Our keto plan will likely be the best option. Its really popular with our clients. It can be hard to stick to, but youll shed fat quickly.

I wasnt without my reservations about this choice. Frankly, it seemed hardcore.

Its a plan consisting of next to no carbs (a maximum of 30g per day; instead of usual recommendation of around 200g) and carefully considered and relatively large quantities of fats and proteins. The aim is to hack your body into entering ketosis, which is a state in which the body uses fat stores for energy rather than carbohydrates. The problem is I love pasta and sourdough toast. At this point I weigh 86kg.

My first week was tough, but interesting. Breakfasts consisted of warming coconut porridge one day, green beans with scrambled eggs another, and on one morning I opened my box to find a peanut butter and cocoa muffin which felt, frankly, pleasingly indulgent.

Meals like aubergine and lamb curry make it easier to stick to the diet

Quite quickly I noticed something interesting: I suddenly had more time in my day to think about things and do stuff. Some of the key decisions of my day had gone, I no longer had to think about what to eat, how to cook it and where the ingredients were coming from. Because I knew a nice delivery man would be arriving with green and white boxes stuffed full of food. I must confess I got almost faintly excited when I saw my favourite dish emerge from these boxes: the now-famous - in my house, at least - BBQ slow cooked beef. Reader, I could have married it. I was less keen on the lighter dinners: prawn salads and the like. They were very well put together but not the best on cold nights. On the scales I was down 3.5 kilograms.

Month two: misery loves company

In an act of solidarity and, as he admitted, jealousy my partner decided to join in at this point. He opted for the balanced meal plan which I unkindly named Plan Cop-Out as he could eat carbs. Where I was getting cauliflower cheese hashes, and creamy Brussel sprouts with stilton, he was having penne with pesto and chicken, Moroccan fish tagine, and frittata. In truth, we were both jealous of each others meals and our fridge was soon divided with a berlin wall with a carb no-fly zone on one end and his own cheese-free section on the other.

One thing I noticed four weeks in was that, apart from visits to buy coffee grounds and some vegetables for smoothies, I barely went to the shop anymore. I was no longer spending money on expensive unnecessary products 5.20 sourdough loaves, and the Gyoza making kit, I am looking at you. Gone, also, were the drinks in the pub I couldnt have any sugar on a keto diet. The commitment that is intrinsic to these plans also has a habit of keeping you on the straight and narrow, because you learn horrifying things like how many carbs are in a pint (11.5g for a pint of Carling) almost by osmosis, when you are checking what you can get away with.

Love Yourself does a low-carb option, a vegetarian plan, a halal plan, and a balanced option for those who simply want healthy meals delivered

What I also noticed was just how little I had to throw away. Gone was the wasted carcass of a chicken Id forgotten about at the back of the fridge, or the limp head of broccoli hidden behind a jar of olives. Everything that was delivered I ate. Instead of my rubbish bin filling up, it was my brown bin full of trays the food came packaged in. Luckily though, they were biodegradable. Weight-check? Another two kilos gone.

Month three: OK, over this now...

Love Yourselfs special keto meals

By month three I can admit I was a little tired. I wanted a piece of toast in the cold mornings with a tidal wave of jam on it. I wanted a pint of beer. This is of course a natural aspect of deprivation. One night, a little fed up, I went to the pub for a few swift pints and a bowl of chips. Not the best thing to eat and drink when youre on a keto diet. Another night me and my partner did swapsies with our meals because he longed for cheese as much as I longed for pasta. Our reasoning was at least we were getting healthy versions. He enjoyed my pork shoulder with rich, buttery broccoli rice as much as I had.

Writer Max Wallis is feeling brighter and healthier after losing weight he gained during the pandemic

When I reached the end of the twelve weeks I stepped onto the scales with a little trepidation. My time in the pub meant I must have slowed my progress. I gingerly opened my eyes at the little digital screen: 79kg I was finally below 80kg, while still managing to eat mountains of cheese. I could have lost a little more, if I had been as pure as the driven snow staying out of the pub, but still it was a job well done. Now, Ill just have to learn to use the cooker again.

Rice Lovers Beware Of These Side Effects Of White Rice | TheHealthSite.com – TheHealthSite

White rice has permanently gotten a bad reputation, but is it really bad for your health? Here's what you need to know.

Written by Arushi Bidhuri | Updated : June 9, 2022 4:01 PM IST

White rice is a staple in Indian households as it is easy to cook, and light on the stomach. While it is extremely popular in India, there is a belief surrounding it that it can make you fat. It is often depicted in a bad light. But is it really that bad for you?

White rice got a bad reputation because it is highly processed and lacks the vitamins and minerals, present in its counterpart brown rice. But is that reason enough to give up white rice!

Here's why eating too much white rice can be detrimental to your health:

The glycemic index (GI) is a measurement of how quickly your body converts carbohydrates into sugars that can be absorbed. Low-GI foods appear to be healthier for persons with type 2 diabetes, as they generate a slow but steady rise in blood sugar levels. Foods with a higher GI might induce fast rises in blood sugar, explains a study published in the Nutrition Journal. And white rice happens to have a GI of 64, causing it to turn into blood sugar more rapidly than brown rice.

The term "metabolic syndrome" refers to a group of risk factors that can increase your risk of developing health problems like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. People who consume big amounts of white rice on a regular basis have a higher chance of developing metabolic syndrome, according to a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. However, the link between it and heart disease is still unknown.

White rice has often been linked to unwanted weight gain. Since it is considered a refined grain and has been stripped of its bran and germ, white rice is considered bad for people trying to lose weight. While many studies have linked refined grain diets to obesity and weight gain, when it comes to white rice, the evidence is mixed. For example, some studies have linked refined grain diets, such as white rice, to weight gain, belly fat, and obesity, while others have shown no link. White rice appears to be neither harmful nor beneficial to weight loss. However, diets heavy in whole grains, such as brown rice, have been demonstrated to improve weight loss and help maintain a healthy body weight more consistently.

Arsenic-contaminated rice is grown in some parts of the world. Rice absorbs arsenic at a higher rate than most other food crops. When soil or water supplies are contaminated with arsenic, this becomes a concern. Several studies have linked arsenic poisoning with an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. It is also harmful to nerves and may impair brain function.

Yes, white rice is criticized for its lack of nutritional value and brown rice is a better option it's not all bad. In some cases, they can be beneficial. For instance, people who eat a low fibre diet or experience nausea or heartburn may find white rice better to digest.

While brown rice is a better option due to its high nutritional value, white rice if eaten in moderation won't be as harmful.

‘This trial gave me back my life’: Inside a transformative weight-loss drug trial – The Daily Briefing

The full results of Eli Lilly's Phase 3 clinical trial for its new experimental weight-loss drug were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) annual meeting on Saturdayand researchers say the results represent "a new era for obesity treatment."

Webinar: Obesity and diabetes market trends for 2022

In Eli Lilly's SURMOUNT-1 clinical trial, its experimental obesity druga weekly injection called tirzepatidehelped clinical trial patients lose roughly one-fifth of their body weight.

On average, trial participants who received the two highest doses of the drug and followed a diet and exercise program lost an average of around 52 pounds during the 72-week trial. In comparison, participants who followed the same diet and exercise plan with a placebo lost just five pounds on average.

In August 2019, Mary Bruehl, a 63-year-old woman with diabetes and fatty liver disease from Norman, Oklahoma, joined the tirzepadite trial after she learned weight loss was a potential side effect of the drug. According to Bruehl, after "doing everything right" for years, her diabetes and weight management had faltered.

Bruehl was nearly immobilized by a hip replacement, which ledto weight gain and low energy levels. "It just seemed like there wasn't anything I could do to get it off," said Bruehl."My stomach didn't know an end to all the food in the world."

When she started taking tirzepatide in September of 2019,she lost between five and 10 pounds a month, losing almost 60 pounds by July 1,2020, and giving her one of the best results reportedfrom the drug.

According to Bruehl, the more weight she lost, the better she felt. As she lost more weight, she was able to resume hiking and other physical activities, which helped her feel even better.

In addition, tirzepatide prevented her from overeating. In fact, if she ate too much, the food would come back up. "I've learned to stop before I get that feeling," Bruehl said.

After each of her weekly injections of tirzepatide, Breuhl experienced just one negative side effect: nausea. However, she was able to quickly resolve the issue with an anti-nausea pill in the morning.

Notably, Bruehl no longer needed to take metformin for her diabetes, and her fatty liver had been resolved.

The biggest challengeBruehlfaced was adjusting to how differently she was treated after she lost the weight. "I went to some counseling about body image and to work through some of the issues I was having," she said, noting that she needed timeto accept what she saw in the mirror and to stop reacting with anger to remarks about her body."It took a little while to get comfortable in my own skin again."

"I feel more well-rounded. I feel like I'm more myself now," she said."This trial gave me back my life."

On May 13, FDA approved tirzepatide, under the trade name Mounjaro,to treat Type 2 diabetes.

While the drug is not currently available for weight loss, Jeff Emmick, VP of productdevelopment for the diabetes division of Eli Lilly, said the company hopes tohavean updated timeline from FDA this year.

According to Robert Gabbay, ADA's chief scientificand medical officer, the trial participants' weight loss of 15% to over 20%could change the way doctors treat diabetes, shifting from a focus on reducing blood sugar to aiming for total remission.

Notably, aprevious study oftirzepatide in diabetesshowed that about half the participants who were early in the onset of diabetes went into remission while they were taking the drug.

"That is a potential game changer in how we think about therapy for people with Type 2 diabetes," Gabbay said.

However, Gabbay noted that researchers do not know whetherremission achieved through tirzepatide will help reduce the commoncomplications associated with diabetes, including cardiovascular disease, nerve and kidney damage, and limb amputations.

In addition, it is not clear whetherthe drug will provide the same cardiovascular benefits as other weight loss drugs, such as semaglutide, noted David Rind, a primary care physician and CMO for the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review.

According to Rind, it would be helpful to conduct a head-to-head trial between tirzepatide and semaglutide to determine whether there are any differences in their health benefits.

"The question is, istirzepatide a step better than all those(other weight loss) drugs?" Rind said. "There's certainly reason to think it might be, but I don't think it's been proven yet."

Still, according to study author Ania Jastreboff of the Yale University School of Medicine, "[t]hose medications are much more highly effective than any other medications we've had for the treatment of obesity right now. They are clearly exceeding the greater than or equal to 5% weight reduction target."

"What we really need to focus on is [that] this is a new era for our patients; this is a new era for physicians caring for patients with obesity -- which is all of us -- and we now have the tools, and will have more tools going forward, to be able to treat our patients with obesity," she said.

"This is a new era for obesity treatment," Jastreboff added. "There were first-generation medicines, second-generation medicines, which were about 2010 to 2020. Starting last year with semaglutide [Wegovy] and now tirzepatide, this is a new era for obesity treatment." (Weintraub, USA Today, 6/5; Monaco, MedPage Today, 6/5)

How to Melt The Fat Inside Your Belly Fast Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Belly fat is more dangerous than you think. There's two types of abdominal fat that we have to battle in order to stay healthy. Subcutaneous fat is stored under the skin and that's the fat that you can see and pinch. It's healthy to have some, but too much can lead to high blood pressure, sleep apnea, kidney disease and fatty liver. Visceral fat is located deep in your belly and it wraps around your vital organs, causing serious health problems like some cancers, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Getting rid of excess weight around the midsection is important for overall health and Eat This, Not That! Health spoke with experts who explain how to melt away belly fat. Jesse Nicassio, former NFL player and CEO of Juke Gyms says, "Stress causes belly fat accumulation by causing the adrenal glands to generate cortisol, often known as the stress hormone. According to research, elevated cortisol levels enhance appetite and promote belly fat storage. Furthermore, women with a larger waist tend to create more cortisol in reaction to stress. Cortisol elevation contributes even more to belly fat accumulation. Engage in stress-relieving activities to assist you in losing tummy fat. Yoga and meditation are both effective strategies."

Dr. Nikhil Kapoor,MD, FACC, FSCAI, a cardiologist with Dignity Health St. Mary, explains, "I typically recommend getting 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day for most people. But exercise and diet alone by themselves are not adequate. They should be done in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle to maintain a healthy weight. And when my patients ask me: 'what's an ideal weight?' It depends on one's height. In medicine and science we utilize body mass index (BMI) which incorporates both weight and height. An ideal weight is one which yields a BMI between 18.5 to 24.9 range. Since I am a cardiologist, I see a lot of patients with hypertension, diabetes type 2, high cholesterol and obesity. One should realize that these conditions are interrelated. As one exercises, eats right and loses weight, it leads to improvement in all the above conditions. As to how quickly should one lose weight? I recommend losing weight @ 5-10% of one's weight in 6 months and continuing this till one achieves an ideal BMI (18.5-24.9)."6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

Dr. Suzanna Wong. a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic and health expert with Twin Waves Wellness recommends, "Eating balanced meals with protein, carbs and fats because This helps to reduce your cortisol levels one of the hormones that makes you hold body fat on your tummy."

Isla Zyair, nutritionist, and plant-based nutrition expert at Obesity Controllers Association shares, "The reason why so many people fail in adopting a new dietary plan is that they try to completely change what they eat and how much they eat. A more sustainable way of changing your diet is by implementing gradual portion control. You don't need to eliminate certain foods from your diet right away. You just need to reduce consumption bit by bit until your body and taste buds gradually acclimate to your new regime."

Zyair suggests, "Finding an accountability partner who will share that journey with you. You don't even have to do it in person. You can just as easily search for one in numerous fitness communities on social media. You don't even have to be on the same level because the point is not to compare your journeys but to take them together. What you need is someone who uplifts you and encourages you to pursue your goals. In return, you will be expected to do the same for them. Try it. You'd be surprised at how many people would actually want to do this with you."

Dr. Kapoor says, "Of course, all the above recommendations are not applicable to everyone! If I have a heart patient who had a recent cardiac event or a heart attack, I may recommend starting an exercise regimen under supervision (~ like cardiac rehabilitation.)" He suggests, "For patients with hypertension, I typically recommend a low sodium diet (in addition a DASH diet has been shown to help reduce high BP but it should only be used under supervision of a medical provider since it entails a higher potassium diet which may not be safe for everyone.) Similarly for patients with coronary artery disease a mediterranean diet has been scientifically shown to help improve outcomes. In general, it's advisable to get input from your PMD or GP prior to initiating a specific dietary, exercise or lifestyle change. This is especially true if one has a pre-existing medical condition."

"Because frozen food requires defrosting, impulse eating will be prevented and willpower is taken out of the equation," say The Nutrition Twins. "This simply requires a plan! Know that you're only having oneand take one serving out to defrost."

Seeing your food intake on paper may give you a whole new perspective on what you're eating and how much of it you're eating. Keeping a food diary or journal helps log your food consumption throughout the day.

The Nutrition Twins say that research shows that people who record what they eat lose twice as much weight as those who don't. It will hold you accountable and make you aware of what you've eaten. In the particular study of approximately 17,000 people, those who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records,

Have you ever accidentally over-poured your oil or dressing into your dishes because it came rushing out of the bottle like it was running in a race? Oils and salad dressings are stored in easy access bottles, and with its liquidy consistency, it's sometimes hard to control how much comes pouring out.

"This is a game-changer," say The Nutrition Twins. "Each tablespoon of oil or dressing is 100 to 120 calories and given that salads are typically heavily dressed and that it's easy to pour several hundred calories in pots and pans when cooking, our clients quickly drop pounds when they make this change."

The slower you eat, the better you'll feel, as The Nutrition Twins suggest that chewing less will actually help lose weight.

"Part of the beauty here is that this habit also makes you more aware of what you're eating and you'll consciously stop eating before you're overly full," say The Nutrition Twins. "Depending on how heavy the meal is, this can equal 100-plus calories a meal, which equates to 4 to 5 pounds lost per month."

You don't need to lose flavor in order to lose weight. Swapping out unhealthy ingredients that give your vegetables taste with healthier options makes for a tasty and nutritious dish. Vegetables are very low in calories. The Nutrition Twins suggest that the lemon and spices, rather than butter or dressing, keep the vegetables that way while adding phytonutrientsa substance which is believed to be beneficial to human health and help prevent various diseases.

These phytonutrients can help to fight inflammation that's linked with weight gain. Plus, they're packed with fiber, so you fill up on them instead of the heavier options.

Do not, we repeat, do not cut out every guilty food pleasure item that you love. You're allowed to give in every now and then, and it's actually encouraged.

"When people feel deprived, that's when they give up on their healthy eating plan and throw in the towel, often going completely overboard," says The Nutrition Twins. "By allowing yourself to occasionally enjoy small portions of your favorite foods, deprivation is taken out of the equation."

The "every-other-day" rule normally calls for restricting the calories you eat several days per week, while eating what you want on your non-fast days. For this situation you would be limiting the alcohol intake that you would normally consume.

The Nutrition Twins suggest that instead of finishing one alcoholic beverage and going to the next, have a non-caloric drink like a seltzer in between.

"You'll save hundreds of calories from the drinks alone and because you won't get drunk as quickly, and you'll make more rational food choices," say The Nutrition Twins. "This is especially important since alcohol increases appetite and lowers inhibitions, making you care less about the choices you make."

The Nutrition Twins say it's easy to mistake thirst for hunger, which is a way to end up consuming excess calories. All that really means is that you just need to hydrate. You can also add lemon to your water for extra flavor.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

The Mayo Clinic suggests that, according to The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, an adequate daily fluid intake of water is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men and roughly 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women.

There are many delicious salad recipes that contain more nutrients than a simple one that contain only veggies, dressing and not much else.

"Veggies are awesome for weight loss because they fill you with few calories, but if you make a meal of them, you won't get protein for staying power, or a healthy carb to prevent craving more carbs," say The Nutrition Twins.

This could lead to overeating at your next meal, or getting afternoon cravings make you choose unhealthy snacks like a bag of chips or a candy bar.

Protein is an important part of your diet because it helps your body repair cells and make new ones. It also helps regulate hormones.

By eating protein, it will take longer to digest, helping to keep you feeling fuller while stabilizing blood sugar. The Nutrition Twins say this will prevent overeating that comes from hunger and from blood sugar dips.

Cooked greens can not only be delicious but very nutritious. You can fill up on low-calorie antioxidant-packed, anti-inflammatory greens and turn them into a healthy side dish or an addition to a sandwich, fish, pizza or salad. It's easy and a great way to help you get lean.

Try this easy 10-minute sauted kale (batch cooking) recipe from the Nutrition Twins that you can make in 10 minutes, and you'll be set for the week.

Do you ever eat a meal and say to yourself, "now I need something sweet?" Or, in the middle of the day when lunch wasn't satisfying enough, and now you need an extra savory snack? Well, instead of constantly looking forward to your post-meal sweet treat, or salty snack, try eating them when you're not in the mood to.

"It's challenging enough to indulge in moderate portions of favorite foods, but dive into them when you're ravenous and you'll set yourself up to overeat," says The Nutrition Twins. "Especially since you'd likely even eat foods you didn't like as much when you're hungry."

Ceylon cinnamon, also known as cinnamomum verum or true cinnamon, has a lighted sweet flavor. It contains all of the health-promoting properties of cinnamon with none of the toxic properties, making it a very healthy option as a sweetener.

"You'll avoid the need for sugar and skirt those extra calories and the inflammation it causes that's linked to weight gain," say The Nutrition Twins. "You'll also get some of the blood sugar and weight loss benefits that come with the cinnamon."

Research posted in the American Diabetes Association shows that as little as 1/2 teaspoon a day of cinnamon can lower your blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides, and it seems it may even be beneficial on weight.

The Nutrition Twins suggest adding Ceylon cinnamon to your smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, muffins, baked goods, cereal, popcorn, and more.

Rana Daggubati launches a grooming brand for men with face, beard and skincare categories. We find out more – indulgexpress

Rana Daggubati has always been known for his great screen presence and his ability to mould his physique according to the requirements of his role. The Baahubali-star has sported a buffed up look in many movies and has also been seen in an extremely lean avatar when required. Known for his impeccably groomed look, the actor and entrepreneur has just launched a brand new mens lifestyle brand, DCRAF in collaboration with Roposo. We catch up with him to find out more.

Do tell us a little bit about your collaboration with Roposo?DCRAF is a D2C mens grooming brand co-created by creator-led live entertainment commerce platform Roposo and me. I believe that men neglect skincare and grooming because it seems overly complex to them. With DCRAF, my aim is to make looking good simple for men through trustworthy, effective products. An Indian brand for Indian men, with inclusivity as its core philosophy, this brand has products in the face, beard and skincare categories.

You have always been considered a very well-groomed man, how much of your personal touch has gone into this brand?I play an active part in what the brand stands for and the curation of its product range. The essence of the brand mens grooming being simple stems from my experiences and the realisation that many other Indian men would be wanting the same.

What defines a well-groomed man, according to you?Firstly, I am glad that most Indian men today realise the importance of grooming and that skincare is not gender-specific. A well-groomed man does not necessarily spend hours on his appearance but understands the importance of taking care of it. He makes sure that he at least has a basic skincare regime in place and is consistent with it.

Youve swung between a lean look and an absolute buffed-up look when the need arises. How have you managed to stay in shape and constantly mould yourself to role requirements? As an actor, my appearance depends on the character I am playing. I am a fitness freak by nature, so I am not afraid of intense workouts. I make sure I am consistent with my fitness routine and ensure that it is appropriate for the role. Nutrition is also very important and needs to be planned according to the requirements of the role. In The Ghazi Attack, for example, I had to give up meat to lose weight quickly, which was a tall order for a hardcore non-vegetarian like me! This also happened right after Baahubali, where I had a bulkier physique. By no means is any of it easy, but I love taking on such challenges.

What is your grooming routine? My work keeps me quite busy, so I ensure my grooming routine is simple, easy and quick. My outdoor shoots expose me to a lot of dust and sun, especially shuttling between cities like Mumbai and Hyderabad. So, face wash, moisturiser and sunscreen become absolute essentials for me.

If you had to give an absolute newbie an introduction to essential grooming for men, what would your five must-dos be?1) Number one would be to always wash your face with a good face wash.2) After washing your face, moisturizing is important. Washing and moisturizing are the basics of any skincare routine.3) Sunscreen is very important, and people tend to not use it unless they feel they will be out in the sun. But sunscreen is useful even partially indoor spaces like cars etc.4) If you have any facial hair, it should always be well-trimmed, no matter what the length.5) I personally love to maintain my beard and would tell all men to use the necessary beard wax, oil, or serum to make their beards look good!

What are five grooming products that you carry around with you wherever you go?I carry a sunscreen, a face moisturizer, a face wash, beard oil and beard wax.

What is the one secret to staying healthy that you would like to share with our readers?Do not underestimate the importance of keeping yourself active. Make sure you exercise regularly, eat healthy and make time to relax and unwind.

And finally, what can we see you in next?I am currently shooting a show for Netflix called Rana Naidu. I also recently finished a film called Virataparvam, which will be released soon.
