The One Dietary Change That Instantly Makes You Lose Weight – nation.lk – The Nation Newspaper

There's a reason every electronic gadget you buy comes with a "quick start" guide. It gets you up and running without having to read the entire instruction manual. The more complicated instructions are, the less likely we busy people will be to read them. Unfortunately, the same goes for diet programs. Complicated guidelines and rules about foods to avoid make dieting miserable and easy to quitwhich makes it impossible if you want to instantly lose weight.

If you want to lose weight and begin improving your health and instantly lose weight, here's your quick start guide: just focus on one simple daily goaladding more color to your meals.

Colorful plant foods contain phytonutrients. These are chemical compounds that give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors and distinctive flavors. A subset of these phytonutrients are substances called flavonoids, which research suggests offer potent healing properties that protect us from metabolic diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

In a study published by the BMJ,researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health noticed that the people who ate diets high in foods containing lots of flavonoids and related compoundsfoods like berries, celery, cherries, radishes, peppers, green tea, pears, prunes, and blueberrieseither lost weight or maintained their weight better than people who didn't eat such foods or ate little of them. Other studies suggest that flavonoids may lower fat absorption and actually boost calorie expenditure.

The US Dietary Guidelines recommend eating 2 1/2 cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruit every day. It's important to try to get as many different colored plants into your meals and snacks as possible because each color provides different types of phytonutrients with different health benefits. That doesn't mean you have to remember the scientific names of those flavonoids, shown below. Just eat a broad variety and you'll cover your phytonutrient bases.

Flavan-3-ols improve arterial flow, reduce blood pressure, and help prevent heart disease and diabetes. In a 2012 review of 42 studies, researchers reporting in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found consistent evidence that flavan-3-ols improved cardiovascular risk and reduced diabetes risk. They also have antiviral and cancer-fighting properties.

Where to find them: Flavan-3-ols impart a bitter taste, which explains why they are not only found in berries and tree fruits, but also in high concentrations in dark chocolate, dark beer, tea, and coffee. Among vegetables, only legumes deliver these nutrients.

For more easy ways to lose weight fast, read 19 Eating Habits to Drop a Pound a Day.

Flavanols may improve both mental and physical performance on tests by boosting overall endurance. They've also been shown to reduce cholesterol and C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation. In a 2012 analysis of studies, men and women with the highest intake of these nutrients had an 18% lower risk of heart disease; other studies suggest flavonols may reduce stroke risk by 20%.

Where to find them: Flavonols are pale yellow in color and are found in vegetables like leafy greens, onions, tea, chia seeds, and buckwheat, and in the skins of fruits like apples, cherries, tomatoes, pears, and berries. Discover the 30 best anti-inflammatory foods here.

Flavones prevent oxidative stresswhat we call aging. They've also been shown to help protect against stress-related diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline.

Where to find them: A wide variety of fruits, especially watermelon, contain them, as do tea, coffee, and chocolate; cruciferous vegetables like iceberg lettuce, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage, and leafy greens like mint, parsley, and celery. Also found in hot peppers.

Flavonones reduce stroke risk and strengthen brain function, reduce appetite, and increase weight loss. In 2009, a study in the journal Diabetes found that a particular flavonoid found in citrus, called naringenin genetically reprograms the liver to burn up excess fat, rather than store it.

Where to find them: Flavonones aren't found in vegetables. You get them mostly from citrus fruits like grapefruits, oranges, lemons, and limes. Peppermint leaves have then, too.

Should you walk or run? Which is best for weight loss, joint health, and burning calories – Insider – INSIDER

Running and walking both offer their own unique benefits and risks. Here is everything you need to know about the pros and cons of each type of exercise and which is best for your health goals.

Both running and walking can help you burn calories, but running generally burns more.

For example, if you compare a 20-minute walk and a 20-minute run, you'll burn more calories running, because you expend more energy the faster you go. Here's the number of calories per hour a 185-pound person can burn walking and running at different speeds:

But if you compare by distance rather than time, the calories burned may not differ as much. For example, if you walk two miles at a pace of 17 min/mile, you will burn 202 calories. If you cover that same distance running at a pace of 9 min/mile, you will burn 293 calories.

Both walking and running can help you lose weight, but running may be the better choice. A 2008 analysis found that people only lost modest amounts of weight about 0.1 pounds per week by walking.

On the other hand, a large 2013 study found that people lost significantly more weight running than walking. It looked at more than 45,000 walkers' and runners' exercise over 6.2 years and found that men and heavier women especially lost more weight running than walking.

"The result really depends on how much energy [you] burn between walking and running," says Duck-Chul Lee, an associate professor of kinesiology at Iowa State University. "And it's not black and white there is fast walking and slow running, and fast walking could be faster than slow running."

Both walking and running can improve heart health. A 2010 review found that walking improves cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and reducing your risk of coronary heart disease.

A large 2017 study found that small increases in the number of steps people took per day and in the intensity of their activity lowered their cardiometabolic risk, such as diabetes and heart disease. People who took more steps a day also had a smaller waist circumference, lower weight, and improved insulin levels.

Additionally, a large 2013 study found that both walking and running reduced the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. The study also found that a faster pace lowered these risks even further.

Although running is generally known to improve heart health, some research suggests that too much long-distance running can be harmful. It's a controversial topic, Lee says.

"[Excessive running] may put more stress on your heart, and that could be a potential explanation for why running may not provide unlimited benefits. 'The more, the better' may not be true in terms of running, specifically with heart disease ," Lee says.

However, this is only for people far exceeding recommended exercise guidelines, like marathoners.

Because running is a higher-impact activity than walking, running poses a greater risk of injury. In fact, walking has less than a third of the injury risk of running.

"There's more risk of injury the faster you go," says Catrine Tudor-Locke, a professor and dean of the College of Health and Human Services at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While running, "you could trip, you could fall, you could twist an ankle. You could also do that with walking, but it's less likely because you're going at a slower relative pace than running."

About 60% of runners will experience an injury that prevents them from doing the activity. Some common injuries in runners are:

Additionally, if you're obese, "walking is more recommended than running because it has less loading and less stress in the knees and ankles," Lee says.

Overall, both walking and running can help you achieve the recommended weekly amount of exercise. You should exercise between 150 to 300 minutes per week if doing a moderate-intensity activity or 75 to 150 minutes if exercising vigorously.

There is no right choice for which is better for your health. Rather, deciding between walking and running depends on your unique goals and risk factors. For example, if you are older or have joint problems walking may be the better option for you. Conversely, if you're pressed for time, running might be the more practical choice.

"The number-one reason why people don't meet the physical activity guideline goals is they don't have time," Lee says.

For people who are sedentary, walking can also be a great starting point. From there, you can gradually increase speed and distance until you are able to start jogging and running, Lee says. Another option for new runners could be the run-walk-run method.

The run-walk-run method involves alternating between running for a certain amount of time and walking for a set number of minutes.

For example, you can run for two minutes and walk for one minute, or run for four minutes and walk for one minute, and then repeat the cycle.

Coaches and runners say the method helps reduce fatigue, avoid injury, and speed recovery. It can also help you ease into running if the idea of running for a certain time or distance seems daunting.

Whether you decide to walk, run, or both, what matters is that you make the time to exercise. It's also important to always challenge yourself to be healthier. "I basically tell people to do more than they did the day before," Tudor-Locke says.

The hard truth about losing weight why speeding up your metabolism for weight loss is a myth – Business Insider Australia

Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that break down the food we eat into energy and muscle.

Though many people think that they will lose weight if they speed up their metabolism, this isnt necessarily true. Heres what you need to know about the complicated relationship between metabolism and weight-loss.

When people refer to metabolism being fast or slow what they are really referring to is a measure of Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR determines the number of passive calories that you burn these are the calories that your body uses up while at rest.

A popular misconception is that adding muscle will help you metabolize calories faster and while this is partially true, muscles at rest actually burn very few calories. Most of the metabolizing energy you expend is through your brain, heart, kidneys, and other organs that are constantly at work keeping you alive and healthy.

There is evidence that cardiovascular exercise can help boost your metabolism for a short period after you work out, but this effect only lasts for an hour or so and is not usually enough to cause significant weight loss.

Theres also the myth that eating certain foods will speed up your metabolism. But the reality is that even if certain foods can affect your BMR its not nearly enough to make a noticeable difference in your weight. In order to lose weight, you must create a deficit between the calories you consume through food and the calories you burn through a combination of diet, physical activity, and passive metabolic processes that are largely out of your control.

The sad truth is that its hard to change your BMR in any significant way. The fact that some people naturally have a faster BMR than others is largely due to genetics.

A review, published in 2011 in Molecular Genetics and Metabolism, that examined 9 twin studies and 19 family studies found that metabolic syndrome and some of the symptoms associated with it including obesity, high cholesterol, and insulin resistance are common among families, suggesting a significant heritability factor.

The exception to this rule comes up only for rare illnesses like Cushings syndrome or hypothyroidism, which both slow metabolism.

As you age, your metabolism becomes less efficient, or what we think of as slowing down, says Heather Seid, a registered dietician and Bionutrition Program Manager at Columbia University.

There are many reasons your metabolism slows down, including losing muscle mass and changes in your cells. But the main reason for metabolism change is that people become less active as they get older.

Unfortunately, you cant completely stop your metabolism from slowing down as you age but exercise may give you a boost. Studies show that keeping active as you grow older can help curb a metabolism slowdown.

THIS is the best type of exercise for quick weight loss, research says – T3

With everyone stuck at home thanks to Lockdown 2.0, many people have already started seeing the result of a sedentary lifestyle: weight gain. And although we are still allowed to go outside to exercise, given the awful weather and the fact that it's getting dark sooner, we all wonder: what's the best type of exercise for quick weight loss?

It's not like we don't like exercising. But when it comes to weight loss, we want to do it quickly. No one likes prolonged periods of starvation or going on special diets such as the keto diet or intermittent fasting (as good as they are). We much better follow a live class and burn some calories on the best exercise bikes or on the best rowing machines. But either of these exercises are good for weight loss?

Luckily, no need to guess as someone already did the math for us. In a recent study, Ocean Finance looked at 'The Most Time-Efficient Exercises for Losing Lockdown Pounds' and concluded that there is one exercise that rules them all, so to say. As well as that, the research also looked at the 'best value for money' exercise, one that cost the least to invest in when it comes to losing a pound-worth of fat.

Needless to say, the results need to be taken with a pinch of salt. First and foremost, the research assumes that "it takes an average of 3,500 calories burned to lose a single pound", which is at best a dated approach and is based on a 1958 study by Max Wishnofsky. This estimate has been if not debunked but at least challenged a few times in the last half a century.

Also, even if the '3,500/pound of fat' model would be correct, it is worth noting that people burn fat differently, depending on their biological sex, their age and many other factors. We must appreciate that some corners will need to be cut to be able to present such information in a concise way.

All that said, the research provides some useful data and does a good job in comparing different type of exercises, at least on a theoretical level. Without further ado, here is the chart that showcases how long it takes each exercise to burn one pound of body fat (3,500 calories):

The top five results are as follows:

Evidently, when it comes to fat loss and calories burned, nothing beats moderate to fast sessions on the treadmill! No wonder all the best treadmills sold out pretty much straight away when the OG lockdown started.

Surprisingly, the second best thing to do is to jump on an elliptical trainer and exercise bikes are a close third. This is good news since the best exercise bikes and the best ellipticals are still somewhat available to buy, especially if you look at the right place.

Looking for an even cheaper way to work out? Calisthenics and circuit training (a.k.a. HIIT) is not far down the list and both can be performed using little to no home gym equipment. If you are up to the challenge, check out the Mike Tyson bodyweight workout or the best bodyweight workout for beginners.

Have one or more of the best kettlebells in your possession? Try the best kettlebell workout or this 2-move kettlebell full body workout.

One more thing we wanted to mention is the last entry on the list, weightlifting (moderate). Although the actual sessions will not burn an awful lot of calories but resistance training is still a great way to lose weight and keep it off.

A 2010 study called "Strength training and weight loss" concluded by saying "strength training can actually help weight loss as an excellent complement to aerobic exercise training and diet. The mechanisms that govern this process are (a) increasing or maintaining their resting metabolic rate, (b) increase in total energy expenditure considering their own strength activity and (c) also the effects related to excessive oxygen consumption after exercise."

Alternate day fasting for weight loss: Everything you need to know – Times of India

Alternate day fasting as the name suggests is a diet where you switch between eating and fasting. Fasting helps by flipping your metabolic switch so that you start burning fat for energy instead of glucose stored in your liver. There are various types of alternate fasting schedules that can fit into your lifestyle. Here are the five most famous types of alternate-day fasting schedule, the benefits and drawbacks of each.

Foods to eat and drink on fasting daysThe calorie restriction for fast days is 500-600 along with which you can have as many zero-calorie beverages as you want. Zero calorie beverages include, coconut water, cucumber drink, green tea, ginger tea, turmeric tea.

One should aim for 50 grams of protein and some low-calorie veggies like a salad with grilled chicken to feel fuller for longer.

If you are a vegetarian, a cup lentil can provide you with 18 grams of protein. As a rule of thumb, per gram protein provides you with four calories.

Foods to eat on non-fasting daysOn non-fasting days, one can eat whatever they want. Studies have found that people who follow alternate day fasting, do not eat too many calories on fasting days. A comparison study found that people following alternate day fasting only consumed 10 per cent more calories on non-fasting days.

BenefitsStudies have found that alternate-day fasting can make one lose 4.5 to 6 kilos of weight in three months, which is more than what's seen with other intermittent fasting regimens that limit eating periods to a certain window each day.

The fasting methods had also shown reductions in blood pressure and insulin resistance. It also promotes autophagy, a deep cellular clean up, which allows the body to get rid of old, damaged cells and replaces them with new ones.

DrawbacksThe diet is not easy to follow. In a study published in 2017 JAMA Internal Medicine, 38 per cent of the alternate-day fasters dropped out, compared to 29 per cent of the regular dieters who restricted calories. People who were fasting gained control over their hunger in 10 days and started feeling energetic on fast days.

Make sure not to fast on two consecutive days.

Foods to eat on fasting daysMake sure to eat at least 50 grams of protein per day. Also, when you fast, drink lots of water to prevent dehydration. It is suggested to eat one big meal at the end of the day and have lesser calorie intake throughout the day.

Foods to eat on non-fasting daysIt is said that healthier the choices, the greater are the benefits. Restrict your intake of processed foods and include more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein.

BenefitsThis method of fasting is less extreme and the weight loss is similar to the above method. If you find alternate day method too tough, you can try the 5:2 method as it seems to have similar benefits as alternate-day fasting.

According to a study published in 2018 in the British Journal of Nutrition, the researchers compared the effect of 5:2 diet with a calorie-restricted diet. It was found that people who followed 5:2 diet, cleaned dangerous blood fats, triglycerides more effectively than people who followed a calorie-restricted diet and didn't fast.

People with high triglyceride levels are at risk of heart attack and stroke. The method also showed a reduction in systolic blood pressure.

Drawbacks

The 5:2 fasting method can also be tough for some people to follow. If you don't diet carefully, you can feel dehydrated and may feel less energetic on fasting days.

Foods to eat on non-fasting daysOn non-fasting days, you can eat what you like. Eating healthy foods is encouraged.

BenefitsPeople who have tried all the methods of fasting say this method is easier to comply with than alternate-day fasting and produces similar benefits in terms of weight loss.

Drawbacks

Just like other methods, it can lead to dehydration if not followed carefully.

You eat breakfast when you get up and then other meals within 12 hours followed by 36 hours of fasting.

The plan has to be followed for the entire week.

Foods to eat on fasting daysYou can drink zero-calorie beverages and a lot of water. You can also take electrolyte supplements to prevent the consequences of electrolyte imbalance, paid heart rate, headache and sometimes even seizures.

Foods to eat on non-fasting daysThere is no restriction, but the healthier choices you make, the greater will be the benefits.

BenefitsA 2019 study published in Cell Metabolism showed that 36:12 fasters consumed 35 per cent less calories and lost around 3.6 kilos in a month. These fasters could even burn fat on feasting day. They showed a decrease in cholesterol, belly fat, inflammation and other positive changes.

DrawbacksThe fasting method can lead to dehydration, fatigue and even fainting.

Foods you can eat on fasting daysOnly zero-calorie beverages and water can be consumed.

Foods to eat on non-fasting daysIt is suggested to eat whole-plant based foods over processed foods. Consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is also encouraged. It is said that once the fast is over, drink juice, introduce solid foods gradually.

BenefitsYou will surely lose weight on this diet plan as you are cutting back on calories. Water fasting for 72 hours before chemotherapy to treat cancer can reduce some of the side effects by protecting normal cells, says a study published in 2016 in BMC Cancer.

Researches also say that the diet benefits people with high bp, diabetes, epilepsy and many other diseases.

Ruth Langsford’s incredible body transformation and emotional weight loss journey – Mirror Online

Ruth Langsford will tell the world just how to do it on Channel 5 show Lose A Stone For Christmas, And Fit Into Your Party Frock.

The TV favourite, 60, will join Dr Amir Khan as they put 12 food addicts through lose-weight-fast diets in time for the festive feasting.

They will show us all how to really get trim for Christmas and Ruth speaks with real authority on the subject.

Of course she was a huge source of fitness inspiration during the first lockdown.

And on the day the second one comes into play she will again but the go-to guide for tips.

Ruth, like so many, struggle to maintain their weight.

Last October, she said sick of gaining weight and felt uncomfortable in her clothes.

Then, six months later on the This Morning, the star said she "doesn't care now" before adding "Im too old to worry".

After hitting 50, the popular presenter admitted her had body changed.

After "comfortably" fitting into a size 12 for most of her adult life, the menopause came along.

It is known that reduced levels of oestrogen can lower to metabolic rate while the metabolism also tends to slow down after 50.

This completely changed her outlook as she found it so much harder to drop pounds when she wanted to.

Ruth blamed it for her weight increasing.

She has even been teased on air about her size by her co-host and husband Eamonn Holmes.

When I put on any weight, I cant shift it and thats making me a bit fed up, she told Woman back in 2019.

I was basically a size 12 all my life, and then, when I hit 50, the weight crept up and 12s were feeling a bit snug.

Eventually I went, Ruth, just admit it, youre now a size 14, and I was fine with that. And now everything that is a 14 is tight. I eat healthily and go to the gym, but its just not shifting.

It wasn't all about the weight gain and inability to shift it.

"I definitely feel like an angry old woman!" she joked. "I fight over very simple thing, and not always people - it can be inanimate objects in the house!"

She admitted her concern about her weight continuing to increase year-on-year.

But then the call came from Strictly Come Dancing.

When I did Strictly in 2017, everything suddenly started to fit and I had my waist again, she said.

But you cant recreate that kind of exercise in real life. I dont obsess about it, but I feel uncomfortable, like Im squashed into my clothes.

Last year, she said she was allowed 1,200 calories a day because of her "bulk, age and height".

Now, it's all about finding that balance.

She is often on social media showing the exercise and healthy meals she puts together.

But there's still room for treats too.

See How To Lose A Stone In A Month airs on Thursday at 7pm

How TikTok became a hotbed of pro-anorexic videos and severely underweight influencers promoting – The Irish Sun

DANCING shyly, popular teenager Amy* is just one of the 800million TikTok users who love performing for the camera but her moves arent the first thing you notice.

Painfully skinny, the bones on her bare legs jut out, and on closer inspection it becomes clear shes in hospital an inpatient recovering from a serious eating disorder and regularly posting about her experiences.

15

While her account is based on her recovery, her 50k followers are shown regular images of her gaunt, unwell body and detailed videos about her diet which, while innocently intentioned, are the type of content experts warn can still expose users struggling with their own disorders to "triggering" content which "glamorises" eating disorders.

TikTok's community guidelines prohibit content that seeks to promote or glorify eating disorders, and the company says such videos will be removed.

But Amy's posts are just the tip of the iceberg.

Dig a little deeper, and a sinister underlayer of purposefully cruel videos telling teens to starve themselves and restrict their diets are easily accessible, and can even creep up on peoples TikTok feeds randomly.

15

Tragically, eating disorders are all too common, with approximately 1.25million people in the UK suffering from one, according to charity Beat, and there has long been an issue with social media users being subjected to potentially harmful and exacerbating content.

Its a particular problem on TikTok because the For You feed shows users a random mix of videos using an algorithm, which means even if you dont follow any eating disorder content, you may scroll on to it anyway accidentally.

15

Forty one per cent of TikToks 800million users are between the age of 16 and 24," explains Kerrie Jones, clinical director and founder of eating disorder clinic Orri.

"This is important because it is also the typical age bracket where people are vulnerable to developing eating disorders and the lack of content regulation and the use of algorithms that deliver content automatically means that people are at risk of consuming harmful content without even actively looking for it.

The rise of our influencer generation means that theres a risk of romanticising and even glorifying eating disorders with content that focuses on food, eating and exercise habits.

15

This type of content can exacerbate someones existing eating disorder symptoms keeping them trapped in the cycle of their illness or encourage those who are vulnerable to engaging with an unhealthy relationship to food and exercise.

Call centre worker India Edmonds, 22, from Brighton, knows exactly how damaging it can be.

She developed an eating disorder when she was 14, and at the height of it was using social media to find thinspiration photos, weighed just six stone, was admitted to hospital and almost died.

15

For me, the illness hasnt completely gone and I still get thoughts about my weight and what I eat, but with treatment I can cope with it now and have learned to live with it and it doesnt control my life anymore," she says.

Social media can have such a negative impact on people with eating disorders, and with TikTok you dont need to even look for it - it just comes up on your feed, which could easily be triggering. You cant control it.

Its hard when you constantly see videos of people who seem so perfect - its easy to compare yourself to them. Because videos can just pop up on your feed, it can be difficult to ignore."

Due to the competitive nature of eating disorders, seeing other people talking about their experiences is enough to remind India of how she felt at the depths of her problem.

15

She says: If I see videos of people with eating disorders I do end up clicking on them and looking at their profile. It makes me think about it a lot more, and it sounds odd but sometimes makes me miss it - for me it was about weight and being small and I sometimes compare myself to them without even realising.

Id prefer to choose what I watch. A couple of weeks ago a video popped up made by a girl who was an inpatient on a psych ward and she was glamorising it and I didnt agree with that - she made it look fun which could be so damaging for people watching.

It reminded me of my own experience, and was upsetting. I come across a lot all the time on social media. Sometimes it feels its just to get the likes or views.

Even for someone who doesnt have an eating disorder, young teens who are easily influenced - it would easily put the idea into their head and think they could do it too.

While TikTok has taken action to ban certain hashtags such as anorexia and bulimia, many users keen to view eating disorder content simply use common misspellings of these terms that still return examples of harmful eating disorder videos.

It doesnt take long to find intentionally sinister content.

One user promises to post: "thinspo, meanspo and fatphobia interact to starve, and says: Skip dinner, wake up thinner.

15

15

One post by a "pro ana" user, liked nearly 1,000 times, recommends a ten day diet plan that varies between eating absolutely nothing to eating a maximum of 200 calories a day.

Another user, who recommends exercising five hours a day, posts a picture of a girls midriff, with the caption: If your ribs arent showing you arent trying hard enough.

Fans write in and give their height and weight, and the account writes back to tell them how much weight they need to lose.

15

While this is obviously sinister content, the line between normal and "harmful content" is far from obvious too.

Videos that at first glance seem positive or harmless can also trigger those with an eating disorder, and sometimes even popular influencers play a role in this.

Doctor Aragona Giuseppe, medical advisor at Prescription Doctor, says: The most damaging [content] is of course is the pro-ana content but also even a person posting their diet plan or their what I eat in a day can have hugely damaging effects on a young person, because they start to believe that they should also be limiting their intake of food also.

15

The obsession with weight and losing weight has always been apparent, however, it is becoming heightened by TikTok because it appears so normal as well as people being able to access this type of content 24/7.

The what I eat in a day hashtag has been viewed over 3.3billion times, with users posting everything theyve eaten over a 24-hour period, with diet versions often focusing on calorie counts.

One user posting under the what I eat in a day hashtag states they have been eating 300-600 calories max and in one day states lunch was five snow peas, 20cal, and a slice of toast with cheese, 177cal and for dinner six chicken nuggets, 306cal and four french fries, 32cal.

15

There is also an eating disorder version of the hashtag, 'what I eat in a day in recovery', which has been viewed 280,000 times.

Care worker Sarah* works at a psychiatric hospital on an eating disorder ward which supports young girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and has seen how damaging these videos can be first-hand.

Its such a competitive illness

She says: One 15-year-old patient who was admitted recently said she found TikTok especially triggering during lockdown, especially the what I eat in a day videos which show peoples weight loss food diaries.

"Its such a competitive illness if she saw someones diet was less than what she ate, she felt like she needed to do the same, or less.

"Its extremely damaging.

This is where the content influencers post plays a pivotal role.

One user with just under 50,000 followers describes themselves as into fashion, fitness and lifestyle, and posted a "ten weight loss tips" video recommending drinking lots of water before meals because youll be less hungry, and also recommends drinking lots of caffeine and intermittent fasting.

15

The video was posted using a series of contradictory, common hashtags including "healthy living", "lose weight fast" and "fasting for weight loss".

Thank you so much!!! Ive been waiting for this video for months now and it was SO HELPFUL! one user commented, while others were quick to condemn the advice, saying: Just stop, youre sending a really bad message to young girls.

Theres also a new influx in positive eating disorder influencer accounts users who document their recovery with the aim to help others, but also still inadvertently post content that could trigger other users.

One such account with 15,000 followers shows a girl acting out a scene from when she was in an eating disorder ward, and hiding her breakfast up her sleeve to trick the nurses into thinking shed eaten.

15

The video was liked over 220,000 times, with one viewer commenting: Do you know how many young impressionable girls are on this app seeing this?!

Writer Eve Simmons, 29, had an eating disorder in her early twenties, and was admitted to hospital aged 23.

Speaking about triggering videos on social media, she says: Theyre abhorrent and incredibly damaging, not only to people who have had eating disorders but also people whore vulnerable to developing them, which could be anyone really.

I didnt look at content like that because for me it wasnt about the way I looked - it was trying to maintain control over my life, which happened via food.

All of the stuff out there, online or on TV - everything can be a trigger when youre in that head space, even the smallest things can be a trigger. So imagine what its like when you have actual people in eating disorder units with their emaciated bodies posting pictures of their food.

The thing that also really gets me is influencers who perhaps have recovered from their eating disorder and are body positive but are still extremely thin and are still reiterating the very destructive messages but are more disguised because they dont look so gaunt and unwell now.

15

"We know that there are positive recovery communities out there which some of our beneficiaries have found helpful it can be very encouraging to hear stories from people who were previously unwell and are now thriving," says Beat's director of external affairs, Tom Quinn.

We would encourage those making positive videos to avoid mentioning specific weights or BMI, or showing photos of themselves when unwell, as although these are well-intended they can be triggering for people currently ill.

Signs and symptoms of anorexia

A TikTok spokesperson told The Sun Online that the platform "was built to provide a positive place for creativity, and we prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our users".

"Content that supports or encourages eating disorders is strictly against our community guidelines and will be removed," the spokesperson added.

"However for some users, TikTok provides a forum to share their experience of living with or recovering from an eating disorder and expression of this nature is permitted.

"This is a complex and multi-faceted issue and we work each day to ensure that we are growing our policies and practices to keep our community safe."

15

So, what more do experts think should be done?

"We recognise there have been steps taken to limit the spread of so-called 'pro-ana' or 'pro-mia' content, such as blocking certain hashtags," says Beat's Tom Quinn.

However, from the amount of triggering videos still live it's also clear that people have been getting around this.

We believe there are further measures that still need to be introduced, such as getting real people to filter out harmful content."

The charity also advises users to take breaks from social media, an idea backed by other experts, with Dr Giuseppe adding: These types of apps are essentially brainwashing tools and the more time people spend watching this type of harmful content the more likely they are to believe that this is normal and of course it will likely trigger eating and body disorders as well as fuel obsession with the way people look.
