Weight loss tips: How to lose weight by following a keto diet, according to this guy who lost 41 kg – GQ India

In the last couple of years, many new weight loss tips and diets have emerged as trendy ways to lose fat. The keto diet or the ketogenic diet is one amongst such diets. The keto diet comprises eating foods that are high in fat, moderate in protein and low in carbs. Its purpose is to help your body achieve ketosis. When in ketosis, you burn fat faster.

But does it really work? Adv. Ajinkya Madhukar Mirgal tells us that it certainly helped his case. At my highest, I weighed 105 kg, he shares. These numbers on the weighing scale compelled him to join Golds Gym, where he commenced his fat loss journey, and lost 41 kg, with the help of a personal trainer and a cheat meal-free keto diet plan.

QUICK READ: What is the ketogenic diet and how it helps you lose weight

I weigh 64.7 kg now, and the below weight loss plan helped me achieve my target weight loss goal.

I started following a very strict keto diet plan, and did not indulge in a single cheat meal. I cooked my own meals and carried them in tiffins wherever I went. I also started working out 5 days a week.

Monday: Back and Biceps

Tuesday: Cardio and Abs

Wednesday: Chest and Triceps

Thursday: Cardio and Abs

Friday: Legs and Shoulders

Saturday: Cardio and Abs

This was mostly a weight training routine, wherein I did 3 sets of 10-12-15 reps. My cardio sessions included walking/running on the treadmill for 20 minutes, followed by 20 and 10 minutes on the elliptical and rowing machines.

For abs, Id do 3 sets (of 25 reps) of flat floor crunches, 3 sets (of 25 reps) of reverse crunches, 3 minutes plank x 3 sets.

We also reached out to Mirgals trainer to understand more about his keto diet, and he broke down the nuance of the keto diet for us below.

Says Sumeet Zore, Golds Gym, nutritional ketosis is a state of health in which your body efficiently utilizes fat as its primary source of fuel instead of glucose. This only happens by reducing the consumption of carbohydrates, increasing the intake of fat and consuming only an adequate amount of protein to meet your bodys needs. In ketosis, fatty acid catabolism takes place and ketone bodies are produced as byproducts instead of glucose as in the normal case.

Basically, in ketosis, the stored fat of the body is broken down for energy and hence the body loses fat. Along with keto, exercising is also important to lose weight. You need to burn more calories than you consume. Exercising daily can help you achieve this by burning off some extra calories, he adds.

Mirgal says his keto diet plan comprised all the things he liked, and breaks down his exact keto diet plan below.

7 am: Lemon + ginger water

8 am: A cup of black coffee without any sugar

8 am to 9:30 am: Workout

10 am: 1 boiled eggs, 1 glass buttermilk, 1 cheese cube

1 pm-: 150 gms boiled chicken, 130 gms of green leafy vegetables (boiled), 1 cheese cube

5 pm: 30 gms of almonds and a cup of black coffee

8 pm- 4 boiled eggs, 1 cheese cube

I also consumed certain protein supplements and fish oil tablets, as prescribed by my dietician to support this diet plan.

- "Stay disciplined in all aspects of your journey - diet, exercising, everything!

- Cook your own meals, because only then you will know what is going inside your body and stay motivated.

Partying with the OR crowd – New Bern Sun Journal

In the history community, it seems like everyone over 50 is getting a shoulder replacement. I have never been one to buck a tradition so I of course went to Dr. Bill Wheatley and signed up to get one done.

Besides, from my childhood up I have collected a marvelous collection of surgical scars, especially on my legs. Mapquest has officially approved using my left leg as a navigation guide through parts of Raleigh. Remember to hang only a slight right at my knee if you want to make it to the art museum!

So my right shoulder is getting some nice catch-up time.

Surgery is great stuff. First, you have a chance to lose weight nothing to eat after midnight and, who knows, what they dig out may weigh more than what they put in! Also, you get to try out new beds. The first one they put me on this past Wednesday morning was ridiculously narrow and the mattress was thin. Plenty of pillows, though, and while the blankets were rather plain, they nicely warmed. Over my head the florescent light cover gave me a picture of hummingbirds and flowers to admire.

IV in I am no fan of needles but Ive learned to tolerate these because its the only way they have to give you anesthesia, unless theres a concrete block somewhere near by holding a door.

Anesthesia, by the way, is named after one of the last Tzars daughters you know, Anesthesia, the girl that legend kept saying may have escaped the Communists and gone into hiding in Europe, until they verified her remains in Russia a few years ago. Legend says she kept a journal that was so dull that Rasputin used it as a means to make his patients drowsy and numb when he was doing things like pulling their teeth, curing their hemophilia or giving them the crazy eye.

My anesthesiologist who I hear is much more fun at parties than Anesthesia was told me he would put in a pain block that would all but free me from pain by numbing my shoulder for the first day. I was all for this until I learned he aimed to give it to me while I was awake using needles and machinery designed by an oil production company and drilling into my neck.

He promised I wouldnt mind it would only take five minutes, which is 12 hours in screaming patient time. I had been given some medicine just before this that was supposed to make me feel loopy and not care, but the IV attempt had not been successful.

This thing where nurses have a hard time finding my veins is getting as old as the guy whose advancing age is the cause of it (namely, me). I can remember when dating Roberta, herself a nurse, when the thing she seemed to admire most was how easily she could find my veins.

At least she said she was a nurse. I am thinking she has some ancestry in Transylvania, though.

Well, they gave me the shot again and I have to admit it worked. I dont remember another thing until recovery room.

Recovery is weird. You generally only remember bits of it, like jigsaw puzzle pieces floating past you in a river of softened blueberry sorbet, because you are hopelessly wigged out and thats how a mind on drugs remembers things. In all my surgeries, climbing my way out of anesthesia felt like wading through Jell-O.

I can remember when hospitals kept you in-house, monitoring you for three or four days before releasing you, but of course now we have insurance companies who know more about recovery than doctors do. You stay a night, until the pain block starts to fade, and first thing next morning they ship you home.

My recovery so far has been awkward: I am right-handed and of course thats the hand thats in a sling. My typing has gone to 40 EPM(errors per minute) and when I try to feed myself my 2-year-old grandson mocks my Jackson Pollock-like results.

I will be in this hopelessly winged condition for a month or more recovery from a shoulder replacement is slow.

But, overall the pain is not nearly what I feared. I look forward to the freedom of movement Ill have down the road, and how nicely Ill fit in with all my history wing-busted friends. So if you attend your next book club and all the members are sitting around with an arm in a sling then turn around and leave. Netflix is calling you home.

Coronavirus and the gym: should you go to the gym during the COVID-19 outbreak? – T3

As you may have heard by now, the coronavirus is spreading, mainly in the media, but also in real world. You, as an avid gym-goer, might think: "should I go to the gym and risk getting infected with the coronavirus?" The answer to this question is not as simple as it may seem and depends on a range of circumstances.

The short answer, and our recommendation, is to be sensible and avoid visiting public spaces when possible in these troublesome times. This is the perfect time to workout at home using the best home gym equipment or even to try a basic bodyweight workout at home. Working out at home can compliment your efforts in the gym well and you don't necessarily need large gym machines, like rowing machines or a multi-gym either (although we wholeheartedly recommend rowing as one of the best full body exercise types).

Shop for hand sanitiser at Amazon (UK)

Shop for hand sanitizer at Amazon (USA)

It certainly appears that the part of the population who should be worried about coronavirus are elderly people, especially those with underlying medical mainly respiratory conditions. Those people often dont frequent the gym in the first place.

From the evidence so far it seems younger, healthy people should have a strong enough immune system to combat the COVID-19 virus in or outside of the gym.Sadly however, its not that simple.

Its important to be mindful of the fact that while corona may not be dangerous to you personally, if you catch it, its essential to avoid giving it to anyone else, as it could be deadly for them.

The advice is also that you shouldn't actively look for opportunities to get the virus, like when parents take their children to visit kids who has the chicken pox, so they can be done and over with the whole thing.

It's not just the free weight area where viruses get passed around

You can keep others safe by doing the right thing and self-isolating yourself if you detect any symptoms of the virus. You can still work out at home, with the best home dumbbell workout or the best kettlebell workout for beginners, so your gains don't have to go away either while you're confined in your own home. (Some more tips on working out at home below).

And lastly, given the precautions companies (and gyms) make nowadays, it's highly likely your local commercial gym will close down soon enough in order to slow the spread of the virus.

Still not deterred? Follow the below tips to minimise the risk of getting infected with the coronavirus in the gym (and elsewhere).

IMPORTANT: if you even slightly concerned about your wellbeing, whether it be the coronavirus or any other illness, you should consult a medical professional before you hit the gym or start working out.Under the current circumstances that may not be possible of course, so workout from home instead.

Feel free to do this even when there isn't a global virus epidemic going on. Washing your hands before and after the workout is important anyway, those weights and machines are being used by hundreds, if not thousands of people and can get pretty dirty.

Washing your hands before the session means you add less bacteria to the handles and washing your hands after is great to clean off any dirt that you got in contact with in the gym.

You should also do what those signs say and wipe down the equipment with sterilising spray or wipes after use - to be courteous - and probably before - to be on the safe side.

Also, you can also consider wearing weight lifting gloves in the gym. And although as fas as we are concerned, COVID-19 doesn't spread through sweating, but cough droplets could end up on the handles and machines and not touching them is always a good idea.

This doesn't look like a good time to hit the gym

Following a workout routine is important as it helps building a habit. Many people have their own routines, for example, most people like going to the gym between 4-7 pm and during this period, gyms are pretty packed, with people literally queuing up for the machines. If I were you, I would avoid going to the gym during this period anyway, but especially in times like these.

If your gym happens to be a 24-hour gym, go early or late, in odd hours before and after the morning/afternoon peak times. Once the dust has settled and the whole virus has hopefully passed, you can get back to queuing up again if you wish.

As we already mentioned this in the gym etiquette 101 article, you should use a towel when in the gym in normal times too, let alone when you want to be extra careful not to get infected. We recommend getting a towel that has discernibly different sides so you know which side to press against the pads on the machines.

Regarding the water fountains, in these troublesome times, you're better off using your own gym water bottle. If you are concerned that you are going to run out of water mid-workout, get a 1-litre bottle, that should see you through, even if you are in the gym for over an hour. Which you won't be, let's face it.

Group activities? No thank you.

One of the best way to get fit is to attend fitness classes where you can work out around other people which said to make you more motivated and help you stay on track with your workout routine. When there is a coronavirus outbreak, though, it's best not to mingle with people all that much so you might want to lay low for a bit, until at least the virus blows over.

Working out at home can be equally as effective

Okay, technically this won't help you getting ripped in the gym but it will help you getting ripped in general. If you are concerned or even worse, show symptoms of the virus, best thing to do is to self-isolate. And if you choose to stay at home and still feel like working out is a good idea, you might as well work out.

All you need is the best home gym equipment, maybe not all of them but some, like a set of modular dumbbells or kettlebells or if you are into cardio, a WaterRower (or a Wattbike Atom). If you are a cyclist, get a turbo trainer or if you prefer running and have some dosh, a treadmill. Haven't got much money to burn? Get an ab roller and a set of resistance bands, that can still give you a full body workout.

Upton couple opens Marlborough Nutrition, a new smoothie and juice bar on Rte. 20 – Milford Daily News

Marlborough Nutrition offers a variety of healthy smoothies and teas, as well as a wellness profile and customized nutrition plan

MARLBOROUGH Helping people learn, develop and practice healthy nutritional habits has long been a passion for Crystal Lozano.

She knows firsthand how transformative it can be to implement a positive daily nutritional routine. Aiming to improve her health and boost her energy levels several years ago, Lozano began drinking meal-replacement smoothies and exercising more frequently. Lozano lost 48 pounds and felt more energetic.

I felt absolutely incredible, she said. Its healthy habits. Its not a quick fix.

Lozano helped friends and family members on their journey to becoming healthier for seven years, but recently decided to expand her reach. Lozano and her husband James, who previously owned a restaurant in Cambridge, last month opened Marlborough Nutrition a smoothie and juice bar on Rte. 20.

It was just something I was doing for myself, said Crystal Lozano. We decided to open a storefront to have a bigger impact in the community. Our goal is to teach people about healthy habits and nutrition.

Customers can receive a free wellness profile and a customized nutrition plan to lose weight, build muscle or boost energy levels.

The bar offers a variety of healthy smoothie flavors including banana split, white chocolate strawberry and brownie batter and classic teas, such as cinnamon, chai and lemon. Customers can add boosters, including B12, collagen and electrolytes, to their teas.

Each smoothie includes 21 grams of protein, 9-18 grams of carbohydrates, 21 vitamins and minerals, 5 grams of fiber and are all 250 calories or less. Crystal Lozano said customers appetites are full for a minimum of three hours after they drink a smoothie.

Its a complete meal, she said.

The most popular smoothie flavors thus far have been almond joy and peanut butter pie. The gusher and blue Hawaiian teas have also been hot items. The Lozanos plan to add more creativesmoothie and tea flavorsin the near future.

There is a stigma that healthy smoothies and juices are not tasty, but the drinks at Marlborough Nutrition dispel that notion, said Crystal Lozano.

Its nice to see peoples eyes bulge when they take it, she said.

Business has been steady since Marlborough Nutrition opened Feb. 14. The business has mostly been advertising on social media and partnered with some area gyms.

It was a whirlwind, said James Lozano. Its been better than expected.

Uplifting and motivating quotes fill the walls of the store, which the Lozanos hope will be a positive influence not only for customers, but the community at large.

I love the positive vibes, said Crystal Lozano. We want to be the light in someones life. We want it to be a happy, positive place.

Marlborough Nutrition is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday; and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Weight loss: How to burn belly fat and carve six pack abs using these six simple steps – Express

Toning sculpted abs may seem like an impossible task when trying to lose weight, but it may not be as difficult as you would expect. An expert has revealed this can be done by making six changes to your diet and exercise regime.

As well as losing a few pounds, most slimmers will want to tighten up their body.

For many, getting six pack abs is a dream that seems slightly unachievable.

Melissa Weldon, head trainer at London fitness boutique Sweat It, shared her simple tips on how anyone can carve a toned midriff.

She said: Visible abs, a flat stomach and six packs are not built in four weeks. Im sorry to burst your bubble.

Unless you have been training consistently for a good six to 12 months and already have a fairly low body fat, its unlikely you will uncover your dream six pack in a short space of time.

READ MORE: Weight loss: One man made easy change to shed 2st and carve six pack abs in 13 weeks

However, all is not lost. Here are my six steps that will help get you get started on your journey to achieving a six pack.

Build a strong foundation

Melissa said: You can lose all the body fat in the world; if you havent built a strong core, no six pack will be revealed.

A workout which covers the fundamentals of fitness; strength, cardio and mobility will make you stronger and fitter with the bonus of improving your metabolism and physique."

DON'T MISS

Follow a healthy diet plan

Abs are built in the kitchen and the gym, so its essential your diet compliments your training, Melissa added.

Im not going to tell you to cut all joy from your diet, that is not the route to long term success but look at your weekly habits and - where you can - improve.

Your diet should be rich in protein, carbs and fats to both fuel you and aid recovery from your training. Add sprinkles of foods and drinks that you really enjoy, and you will be much less likely to fall off the wagon and have a binge.

Set fitness goals

The expert said: Work towards fitness goals; run a 5k or an obstacle race, work towards lifting those bigger dumbbells, try out those intermediate speeds in the treadmill class you take.

Always strive to be better than the person you were yesterday. The moment your focus shifts to getting better at fitness, you will find you start walking with a whole new swagger; youll be shocked at how getting fitter and stronger changes how you see yourself in the mirror.

You might just start seeing the beginnings of that beach body in a matter of weeks.

Train with a friend

She said: Its very easy to back out of a workout when they only person you are accountable to is yourself. Less easy to let a friend down for that 7am class.

Colson Smith weight loss how the Coronation Street star shed over a stone – The Sun

COLSON Smith turned heads at The Television and Radio Industries Club Awards this week - as he showcased his impressive weight loss.

The Coronation Street star, 21, looked remarkably trim as he sported a fitted suit and waistcoat for the star-studded bash.

7

7

And many fans, desperate to follow in his footsteps, were left asking exactly how Colson, who plays fan favourite Craig Tinker in the ITV soap, managed to trim down.

In particular, Colson has been hitting the gym regularly to make sure he's fit for his storyline on Corrie.

His police officer character has taken up running after finding that he was out of breath while chasing shop lifters.

Craig told his Weatherfield pals that he was going to make an effort to get healthier after being bullied at work.

7

7

Despite overhauling his fitness, Colson also admits that food poisoning caused him to lose one and a half stone in December.

He ignored advice not to eat some seafood while holidaying in Thailand.

Speaking on his podcast Sofa Cinema Club - which he hosts with Jack P Shepherd, 31, and Ben Price, 47 - the star explained: "I was in Ko Lanta. I was sat on the beach and the waiter came over and was like, 'What would you like?' And I said, 'I'll have the prawns to start please.'

"I had avoided seafood but I was sat on the beach and I was like, 'How can you not have seafood on the beach?'

7

"I had avoided seafood [on Ben's advice] but I was sat on the beach and I was like, 'How can you not have seafood on the beach?'

"Well, anyway. I'm not doing that again. I've lost about a stone and a half."

Colson was only able to eat a banana and three slices of toast for a whole week before recovering.

The drop in Colson's natural daily calorie intake put his body in a calorie deficit state - a state which has been proven to help slimmers stimulate rapid weight loss.

7

7

Of course the way Colson lost weight was not a healthy way to shed pounds but to lose weight in a similar manner, a slimmer needs to also reduce their daily calorie intake.

Harry Thomas, owner of No1 Fitness and nutrition expert said: "So the first thing is to reduce calories and get yourself into a deficit, this means burning more than you are consuming.

"The best way is too create awareness on what you are currently consuming, including all food and liquids.

"This is a great way to learn about how much we are consuming."

Another simple way you can lose weight is by simply doing more exercise.

Harry added: "The best way is to move more - this will all help to burn more calories."Make it simple and pay attention to your step count.

"I recommend a minimum or 10000 per day, but if you are way short of that, aim to beat your average score. The more you move the better."

Why oranges may be the key to losing weight – Yahoo Lifestyle Australia

Eating oranges could be the route to losing weight, staying slim and preventing diabetes, new research has found.

This works due to a chemical found in oranges and tangerines called nobiletin, which may even have the ability to reverse obesity and unclog arteries.

In the experiment by the University of Western Ontario, mice were fed the substance and turned out to be leaner and healthier as a result.

The researchers are now conducting the same experiment using humans.

Dr Murray Huff, who has been studying nobiletin's effects for over a decade, was pleased with the research.

We've shown that in mice that already have all the negative symptoms of obesity, we can use nobelitin to reverse those symptoms, and even start to regress plaque build-up in the arteries, known as atherosclerosis, he said.

This means that nobelitin could be essential in reversing symptoms of obesity in its tracks. Though, how this super compound works is still shrouded in mystery.

Time to add a daily orange to your healthy routine. Photo: Getty

The researchers originally thought the molecule was likely acting on the pathway that regulates how fat is handled in the body, called AMP Kinase.

This enzyme turns on the machinery in the body that burns fats to create energy, and it also blocks the manufacture of fats.

However, during further tests on mice without AMP Kinase, the nobiletin still had a positive affect.

While the way nobiletin is working in the body remains a mystery, Dr Huff was pleased that it didnt work through AMP Kinase.

It shows that nobiletin won't interfere with other drugs that act on the AMP Kinase system, which currently include diabetes medicines like metformin.

The team will now move onto trialling this on humans. If its successful, this could provide us with a beneficial way to tackle obesity - a major burden to the healthcare system.

Obesity and its resulting metabolic syndromes are a huge burden to our health care system, and we have very few interventions that have been shown to work effectively, Dr Huff said.

We need to continue this emphasis on the discovery of new therapeutics.

Soap stars biggest weight loss transformations from Natalie Cassidy, Catherine Tyldesley to Alan Halsall – The Sun

SOAP stars are some of the hardest working actors in showbiz as they have to be on screen up to five days a week.

But the hard slog doesn't stop there for our favourite celebrities, with many of them inspiring viewers to get fit in real life with staggering body transformations.

Here, we delve into some of the most dramatic weight loss journeys from the stars of Emmerdale, Coronation Street, and EastEnders.

10

The 36-year-old actress, who plays Sonia Fowler in EastEnders, has lived most of her life in the public eye and amazed fans when she shed a staggering three stone.

Many of Natalie's fans were left asking exactly how she managed to trim down - and drop from a size 16 to a size eight.

The mum-of-two now feels "much more confident and comfortable", telling The Sun: "I have learnt how to eat and how to be comfortable with who I am."

And Natalie credits training for the London Marathon last year for helping her to lose weight.

10

The 56-year-old Coronation Street actress, who plays Eileen Grimshaw in the ITV soap, has wowed viewers as she dropped from a size 14 to a 12 in recent months.

Her secret to losing weight has been going on a Mediterranean diet, which is high in foods that are good for you, and low in naughty foods, such as those with a high sugar content.

It's high in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, fish, and unsaturated fats such as olive oil.

This diet has been proven to be beneficial for the heart, even helping to reduce the risk ofheart disease.

10

Jennie, 36, plays Fiz Brown in Coronation and has grown up in front of the cameras having joined Corrie in 2001.

She impressed fans when she lost two stone back in 2009 when she was 25 years old, and said at the time: "Ice cream is bad, salad is good - it's not rocket science!

"If you eat more of the good stuff and take more exercise then you'll lose weight."

10

Alan, 37, dedicated himself to four-hour workouts after his split from wife Lucy Jo-Hudson.

The actor, who plays Tyrone Dobbs in the ITV soap, has been on a health kick since last year and the Sun Online revealed Alan had been burning more than 4,000 calories during his sessions.

The results of his exercise regime have been clear, as he has shed a noticeable amount of weight and changed his overall body shape.

10
