Four fascinating facts about fat

Weight loss is always on our minds, especially as we emerge from winter and approach another dreaded swimsuit season. According to a recent national poll from Readers Digest and Yahoo! Health, 40 per cent of U.S. adults are trying to lose weight and 62 per cent have attempted to shed pounds within the past five years.

When youre trying to slim down, its easy to fall into a criticizing rut and blame your body instead of celebrating and enjoying it, flaws and all. Somewhere along the way, the body becomes something to use, mould, shape and fret about; you dont see its underlying perfection, but instead look for whats wrong with it.

So let me shed some light on why we have fat in the first place, why and where we store it, and how we may have gotten too much of it. Its easier to stop hating something once you get to know it a little better.

Our bodies contain two different types of fat: essential fat and non-essential or storage fat. Essential fat is tucked away in our bone marrow, organs, nervous system and muscles. If levels of essential fat get too low, our bodies wont function properly. Thats why its essential.

Nonessential fat, despite its name, is also important: It protects internal organs and converts excess calories to stored energy, creating a safety net for times of deprivation and shortage. But when this fat gets stored in and around our organs as visceral fat, thats where we run into trouble. Deposit too much fat viscerally and you can increase your risk for heart disease, dementia, and even certain kinds of cancers.

My aim is not to scare you, but to let you know that while fat plays many positive roles in our bodies, it can be dangerous. Fat is there for a reason, and you can safely and healthfully get rid of any excess amounts that endanger your health. Here are a few key points I hope will help you put this overly demonized part of the body in perspective.

Fat Fact No. 1: Our bodies need fat to live.

Without fat, our bodies wouldnt function properly. We cant reproduce if body fat falls too low, so basically none of us would be alive today without it. Though our bodies create some fat, certain fats can only be obtained from foods. And having the right balance of these essential fatty acids, is important to heart health, brain development, regulating mood, blood clotting, and controlling inflammation.

Fat Fact No. 2: Fat can make us more attractive.

In our thin-obsessed culture, you might be shocked by this suggestion. But its true, and its important to stop demonizing obesity and excess weight. Fat keeps skin and hair healthy, which enhances appearance, and if you lose too much of it on your face, you can look gaunt.

PTC man climbs hemisphere’s tallest mountain for needy kids

Four years ago, Peachtree City resident Brad Jubin had never even contemplated climbing a mountain.

I wasnt exercising or eating right. I weighed 250 pounds and climbing stairs was a challenge, Jubin said. I was at a Souly Business retreat, accepted Christ and had a single prayer, to get healthy for the sake of my kids.

Jubin said he got home from the retreat and fell back into his usual habits. He still wasnt eating right or exercising. Two weeks later, Rick Davidson, then president of Coldwell Banker Bullard Realty, talked about Climb for Kids, an event that would raise money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

I thought, I can climb a mountain and lose some weight, Jubin said. I told Rick Id like to give it a try. He told me I would experience something at the top of the mountain.

Jubin stated that the process of getting in shape for that first climb was like a light switch being flipped. He also found the fund-raising aspect, something he didnt think he would enjoy, to be his favorite part.

The Climb for Kids that year raised $40,000 for Big Brothers and Big Sisters, which meant that 40 kids would be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. Jubin thought back to his prayer, to get healthy for the sake of his kids, and was blown away by how completely his prayers had been answered.

Exercise for life

Aerobics is the most important exercise to stay healthy.

IN the previous two articles, I explained the importance of being active, especially to remain flexible, build and maintain sufficient muscles, and do regular aerobic exercises as we age.

Today, I will share with you tips on doing an aerobic exercise programme that will help you secure your health and fitness as you grow older. Although the exercises can be done on the field, it is best if you also go to the gym because the machines can guide you and monitor your heart rate regularly. Some of you may even have your own home-gyms and personal trainers.

The warm-up

The purpose of the warm-up is literally to warmup the body so that the exercises to be done can be more efficiently and safely executed. Blood is gradually diverted to the muscles so that when the full exercise is done, it will not be a shock to the system.

At rest, the body is in equilibrium, with the different body systems working at different rates depending on the tasks at hand. When any organ system has to work harder, the body diverts blood to that system at the expense of others.

For example, after a meal, much of the blood is diverted to the intestines and liver, which have to work hard for the next two hours or so. If you eat too much, the diversion even compromises brain circulation and you may become sleepy. Now you know why you get sleepy after lunch, especially if you have to sit through a boring talk or lecture.

The warm-up exercises should be light, and confer a smooth transition from the non-exercise phase to the exercise mode. These can include stretching exercises, light-weight training, briskwalking or jogging. You should not get tired or strain yourself at this stage. Warm-up exercises should take five to 15 minutes and prepare you for higher intensity exercises.

Stretching

You can do part or the whole set of stretching exercises as your warm-up, but if you dont, then it is good to do the full stretching exercises at least once a week. You can follow the exercises I described previously or any set you have learned. Those who do yoga asanas and pilates have the added advantage of having stretching/flexibility as their main exercise, and can expect to remain healthy and flexible for as long as they practice.
