Professional Eaters Scarf Down Slices, Tip the Scales Pre-Diet

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire -03/09/12)- Today DietBet.com, an online social dieting game that gives players the opportunity to compete to lose weight, announced the winner of its "last supper" competitive eating contest of gigantic pizza slices at the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square Odditorium, located at 234 West 42nd Street.

Crowds cheered on the three members of All Pro Eating who bulked up on 32" Koronet pizzas before pulling a dietary 180 and weighing in for the start of their four-week long weight loss competition. The winner, Will "The Champ" Millender, not only scarfed down the most slices, but was also the heaviest of the bunch, tipping the scales at a whopping 446 pounds. Joel "The Cannon" Podelsky weighed in at 271.5 pounds and Mike "Sisco-Kid" Sisco weighed in at 268 pounds.

Players who reach their goal of dropping four percent of their starting weight in four weeks will split a $1,000 pot. Trained to do nothing but consume everything in front of them as quickly as possible, these men-turned-eating-machines will think twice before competing over the next month in wing-offs, ravioli races, taco triathlons, and milkshake marathons.

Members of All Pro Eating participating in the competition include:

The Champ, The Cannon, and Sisco-Kid competed live at Ripley's Odditorium on 42nd Street, while the others weighed in remotely. Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square's own Greg Dubin, known as the "Great Dubini" emceed the fattening festivities. Amazingly, all three eaters continued to munch on cheesy pizza well after time ran out on the clock.

"These slices of pizza were bigger than the contestants' heads ... and the crowd couldn't believe how quickly the pro-eaters swallowed them down," said Michael Hirsch, president/general manager of Ripley's Believe It or Not! Times Square. "In true Ripley's style, the event showcased a Believe It or Not! twist."

"Maybe that is why I got into competitive eating -- I would never turn down a free lunch," said Joel "The Cannon" Podelsky.

DietBet injects fun, competition, and social collaboration into Americans' seemingly never-ending quest to shed extra weight. Players use the DietBet message boards to offer both encouragement and trash talk. Getting into the spirit, Will "The Champ" Millender already shipped a case of Twinkies to Todd "The Hungry Genius" Greenwald.

"I've been in all kinds of eating competitions and this is one of the most unusual," said Jammin' Joseph Larue. "Getting professional eaters to lose weight ... it's like asking fish to walk or librarians to scream."

"We relish the opportunity to watch these expert eaters tackle a different kind of food-related competition. We're curious to see what they do to fill the time. Maybe Joel 'The Cannon' will get into Words With Friends," said Jamie Rosen, DietBet's founder.

Weight Loss Success: Kim Konkel Stopped Drinking Soda And Lost 98 Pounds

Got a success story of your own? Send it to us at success.stories@huffingtonpost.com and you could be featured on the site!

Name: Kim Konkel Age: 31 Height: 5'7" Before Weight: 236 pounds

How I Gained It: I have always been big. I just read an article that said if you are over 8 pounds, 7 ounces at birth you are considered a large baby. Well, I was 8 pounds, 9 ounces, so right off the bat I was bigger than most kids.

While I was growing up I never really exercised. I was diagnosed with severe asthma that made it hard for me to do much of anything for any length of time. I would play outside and ride bikes and go swimming, but that was about it. And that was only during the summer. Since we live in Wisconsin, playing outside in winter is possible, but only when it's not super-cold, and usually that is just to go sledding.

When I got pregnant with my daughter, I developed severe preeclampsia and got up to 263 pounds. My blood pressure skyrocketed and my doctor put me on medication.

Breaking Point: I was sitting at my computer one day in March of 2011, and I read an article written by Dr. Oz. In the article he was talking about how to lose weight and he said cutting out just 100 calories a day could result in dropping 10 pounds in a year. I had been diagnosed with cervical cancer in December 2010, and I figured the healthier my body was the more likely I was to beat the cancer. I was drinking at least six sodas per day, so that really got me thinking. I did the math and realized by stopping drinking soda I could easily cut out over 700 calories a day, just that easily.

How I Lost It: I started drinking sparkling water instead of soda. If it wasn't for that stuff I would have never been able to give it up. It tastes just like soda, but without any calories, sugar or sodium. I keep a huge supply of it on hand at all times! In the first month I dropped over 12 pounds, by just not drinking soda.

Then, I decided to actually try to start eating healthy. This is hard for me, especially at night. I suffer from severe insomnia. I am awake every two hours, like clockwork. Before, I would get bored or a little hungry and eat a whole TV dinner. I have since discovered I am a huge fan of guacamole! Now, at night when I wake up, I have some guacamole and some tortilla chips and that satisfies me for the next four times I wake up, so I don't eat anything else. I eventually thought about trying to lose more weight. My first goal was to get down to 200 pounds. That happened within a few months, so then I decided to get down to 184. That happened shortly thereafter. I just kept adjusting my goal weight as I would reach the next one.

I stepped on the scale today at 138. I am beyond thrilled. To get to this point I have been extremely disciplined about eating. I went from eating any and everything I wanted to knowing how much fat and how many carbs are in basically every piece of food on the face of the earth! I read tons of articles about weight loss and did a lot of research to educate myself so I would know off-hand what I should eat and what I should avoid.

I discovered that salad dressing doesn't have to be creamy to be good. I love fat-free Italian dressing. Put a touch of parmesan on the salad to give it some protein, and it tastes just like a Caesar salad! I found that in order for a person to be successful in losing weight, he or she needs to find foods that are healthy and tasty. You can't follow a diet if you don't like the food, it won't work. You have to figure out what will work for you. For me, it's all about tricking my brain into thinking I am eating unhealthy food, when I am really not. Take green beans: I flavor them with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray. That way, I get the taste of butter with less fat.

Cardio And Pooping: A Chart Of Every MLB Player Who Reportedly Lost Or Gained Weight This Offseason (And Why) [Mlb]

Every spring training, seemingly every other ballplayer shows up to camp and declares himself "in the best shape of my life." Our pal Craig Calcaterra over at HardballTalk has done yeoman's work on this phenomenon over the years, but we wanted to know more: Who gained weight? Who lost weight? How much? And why?

We've compiled a list below featuring baseball's biggest losers and gainers for the 2012 baseball season. With a few exceptions, the 2012 weight figures were calculated using listed weights for 2011 and adding or subtracting whatever pounds were gained or lost. A word of caution: Because we're talking about two things that entail a great deal of magical thinkingbaseball players and weightit's likely that just about every number listed below is a fib.

Mike Scioscia, Angels manager 2011 weight: 268 pounds 2012 weight: 230 pounds [estimate by Angels PR department] Where the weight went: "So Scioscia started eating better, eating less, and walking like a postman, covering as much as 10 miles a day in the off-season, some of it with his golden Lab, Bella." [Los Angeles Times]

Bobby Jenks, Red Sox pitcher 2011 weight: 275 pounds 2012 weight: 240 pounds Where the weight went: "Basically from the middle of last season until December, I had nothing to do but work out, so that's all I did. I popped a movie on during the winter for the kids and would just sit behind the couch and ride the bike all day." [MLB.com]

Brett Cecil, Blue Jays pitcher: 2011 weight: 235 pounds 2012 weight: 203 pounds Where the weight went: "Cecil wasn't happy with himself or the fact that he was demoted after a 1-2, 6.86 start to the season (after leading the team with 15 wins in 2010). At the end of the season, he had a frank discussion with management and committed to a serious weight loss and training program over the off-season." [Toronto Star]

Carlos Villanueva, Blue Jays pitcher: 2011 weight: 236 pounds 2012 weight: 205 pounds Where the weight went: "I was 236 on Oct. 31, and I saw myself and was like, Man, I look horrible,' and I felt horrible, I was eating horrible, so I just started working out, did cardio for two months, all the way to Dec. 31. After that I started lifting, stayed eating well and originally I wanted to be 215, which was my weight a couple of years ago when I felt good, but my metabolism got fast and when I got here I didn't even know how much I weighed and I was 205. I was like, Jeez, a little too low.' It's weird, last couple of years it was like I've got to maintain, I've got to lose, now I've got to eat so I can fill out my uni a little more." [Sportsnet]

Jake Westbrook, Cardinals pitcher 2011 weight: 215 pounds 2012 weight: 190 pounds Where the weight went: "Two weeks with no carbohydrates melted 14 pounds, and nutrition along with an altered training regimen took care of the rest. 'It was club encouraged,' manager Mike Matheny said. 'He looks good. Obviously, he's lost some weight but he's also put on some muscle mass, so that's a great combination.'" [AP]

Ryan Lavarnway, Red Sox catcher 2011 weight: 225 pounds 2012 weight: 200 pounds Where the weight went: "He said he lost 25 pounds in the off-season, twice. He got sick in Venezuela and lost the weight. He put it back on and then lost it again." [CBS Boston]

Miguel Cabrera, Tigers first baseman 2011 weight: 240 pounds 2012 weight: 220 pounds Where the weight went: "[Catcher Alex] Avila spoke about Cabrera's conditioning program on Friday with ESPN, but also over the phone with The Detroit News. Avila said Cabrera has lost 20-plus pounds with the intention of losing 'at least 15 more.' 'You know, you can make up your mind that you're going to be able to do something,' Avila said, 'but in this situation, Miguel has thrown himself into doing everything he can to do the best job he can.'" [The Detroit News]

Tim Lincecum, Giants pitcher 2011 weight: 197 pounds 2012 weight: 175 pounds Where the weight went: "Lincecum took to using a counter-current pool to get down to around 175 pounds from 197. He also cut down on his famous trips to In-N-Out while eliminating other outlets entirely." [Yahoo]

Mila Kunis, 'Black Swan' and how extreme diets warp your body

Pascal Le Segretain / Getty Images

Mila Kunis attends the Christian Dior Ready-To-Wear Fall/Winter 2012 show as part of Paris Fashion Week at Musee Rodin on March 2 in Paris, France.

By Diane Mapes

Losing weight like a star may seem like a dream come true. With a personal trainer, personal chef, personal dietitian and personal assistant at your side, who couldn't shed 20 pounds in a few short weeks?

But a new interview with actress Mila Kunis in Harper's Bazaar indicates that fast weight loss (in this case for a role) can sometimes result in fast weight gain -- in all the wrong places.

Already lean, Kunis dropped 20 pounds in order to play Natalie Portman's ballerina frenemy in "Black Swan." At 95 pounds, Kunis says "I was muscles, like a little brick house, but skin and bones."

Unfortunately, when she gained the weight back, Kunis says it ended up in completely different places.

"All the weight that left my chest went to my side hip, my stomach," she told the magazine.

Andrea N. Giancoli, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, says redistributed weight isn't uncommon after drastic weight loss (and weight gain).

"What often happens with extreme weight loss and when you lose weight very quickly is that you lose muscle tissue," she says. "Unfortunately, when we gain the weight back, it comes back as fat."

Rihanna’s dad told her to lose weight

The father of R&B singer Rihanna, Ronald Fenty, told his daughter to lose weight because she was getting "too fat".

In an interview with Heat magazine, Fenty said: "I actually thought she was a little fat the last time I saw her.

"But when I saw her at this year's Grammys, I thought she was back to her normal size. I used to joke with her, 'Robyn, [the singer's real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty], you're getting too fat.'

"But I think she's fine. I think she looked excellent, as everyone saw, at the Grammys. She's dieting, she's working out."

He also commented on the fact Rihanna has rekindled her friendship, if not her romance with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, despite him being convicted of assaulting her in 2009.

He told Heat: "Chris is a nice guy and everybody's entitled to make mistakes in their life - God knows how many I've made. She's her own woman now."

How to be like Beyonce (and breast-feed in public)

SELF.com

Beyonce fed her baby! In public! This might not seem like earth-shattering news, but since the superstar was spotted breastfeeding 7-week-old Blue Ivy Carterat New York City restaurantSant Ambroeus, she has generated praise from moms and experts alike.

"It's really important to normalize breastfeeding," saysJill Wodnick, M.A., breastfeeding educator and Community Doula Coordinator for the Hudson Perinatal Consortium in N.J., who believes that every woman should feel comfortable feeding her baby in public.

When you have a newborn, it can feel like they're constantly hungry, and that's because they are! "A baby's digestive system is considered immature; a newborn baby's stomach is the size of a marble," says Wodnick. So, if you're taking your baby out of the house -- to a restaurant or wherever -- you're going to have to feed her at some point, because she digests the small amount of nourishment she can take in at a time so quickly. Feeding an infant frequently, says Wodnick, is developmentally appropriate and critical to that baby's developing brain.

"When you follow your baby's feeding cues, you're really setting up her brain for the rest of her life," says Wodnick, adding that breastfeeding lowers your baby's chances of developing asthma, diabetes, eczema, ear infections, obesity and heart disease, among other health benefits. You also reap health benefits when you breastfeed your baby, from lowering your risk of certain cancers to helping your body heal post-childbirth.

In fact, theAmerican Association of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding (if possible) for about the first six months of a baby's life, followed by in combination with food until at least 12 months. They also urgepediatricians and other health care professionals to assist women and children in the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding as a health issue, not just a lifestyle choice.

That being said, it's OK to feel a little shy! "I really honor that someone feels shy about breastfeeding in public," Wodnick says. "I would never tell someone, 'just don't feel modest!'"

Wodnick says it's important to remember that "this is how mammals feed their babies." And, she points out, "It's very easy to discreetly feed your baby... You really don't see a nipple or areola when a baby is breastfeeding." In fact, she says, "You see more of women's bodies standing in a supermarket line looking at tabloids that you do when you see a human baby eating human milk!"

It's perfectly understandable to feel a little self-conscious, but if you keep these tips from Wodnick in mind, you can become more comfortable with making like Beyonce and feeding your baby when she needs to be fed, paparazzi or not!

1. Learn to recognize and follow your baby's feeding cues. If you are a mom who feels modest or shy, it's that much more important to understand and follow your baby's feeding cues, says Wodnick. "It's easier to latch a baby that's regulated," she says -- a baby, that is, who doesn't have to cry and cry to get fed.A "disregulated" baby in a crying frenzy, Wodnick explains, will have a harder time latching because of the position of his tongue muscle."A regulated baby who is giving you cues like putting his hands in his mouth or licking his lips or bobbing his head is going to latch and breastfeed more easily, with less fuss," she says.
