Man in critical condition after Pr. Georges L.A. Fitness shooting – The Washington Post

A man is in critical condition after being shot inside an L.A. Fitness in Glenarden on Thursday night, Glenarden Police Chief Regis Bryant said.

Police responded to a call for a reported shooting at about 8:45 p.m. in the 9400 block of Ruby Lockhart Boulevard, near Woodmore Towne Centre, Bryant said.

The shooting took place on the basketball court inside the gym, where several people were playing a basketball game, Bryant said. An argument broke out between two men, and one of them shot the other.

No one else was injured in the shooting. Bryant said no one has been taken into custody.

There were more than 50 people inside the building at the time of the shooting, Bryant said. The Prince Georges County Police Department is investigating the shooting, Bryant said.

Earlier on Thursday evening, at about 5:30 p.m., Prince Georges County police officers responded to a separate shooting in the 600 block of Audrey Lane in the Oxon Hill area, police said. They found a man with gunshot wounds outside, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later that night, a man was also shot and wounded at about 10:25 p.m. in the 9000 block of Baltimore Avenue in College Park, Prince Georges County police said.

County police are investigating four other homicides that occurred this week. A 47-year-old man was fatally shot in Camp Springs Sunday, which police said they do not believe is a random crime, and a 47-year-old woman was killed in a domestic-related stabbing Tuesday in Lanham, police said.

A 19-year-old man was fatally shot in the Chillum area Wednesday. And in a separate incident also in the Chillum area, a 23-year-old man was stabbed in a case in which police said they arrested and charged two men with murder.

Prince Georges County police have investigated 30 homicides this year compared to 28 this time last year, according to police department data.

"How to Fight Off Death": Arnold Schwarzenegger Shares Fitness Habits To Reduce Mortality Risk By 50% – Generation Iron Fitness Network

Arnold Schwarzeneggerhas released a daily newsletter where he is able to speak to fans sharing different tips. This time, the bodybuilding legend spoke about how to reduce mortality risk in the gym.

Schwarzenegger referenced the British Journal of Sports Medicine when discussing his point.

Research suggests that the best way to prolong your life is to include both resistance training and aerobic exercise.

Arnold Schwarzenegger discussed how scientists studied data to figure out what type of exercise was better and how long it would take to find benefits.

Scientists analyzed data from nearly 100,000 people to determine behaviors that are associated with longer lifespans. Some of the most concerning data wasnt about the benefits of exercise, but how few people consistently move. Only 16 percent of people said they regularly lifted weights, and 32 percent performed weekly cardiovascular exercise.

Ultimately, Arnold explained how anywhere from three to five hours of exercise per week would be beneficial.

The current recommendation is to get 150 to 300 min of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise per week. So any movement is better than no movement, but the more youre able to push the intensity a few times per week, the more your body will thank you in the long run.

Along with tips for health and wellness, Arnold Schwarzenegger has shared workouts of the week. During his recent edition of the newsletter, this workout was recommended:

How it works

This is a timed workout. Youll set a clock for 20 minutes and then set a timer for 60 seconds.

Perform two reps of one exercise (you can select from the list below). Then, rest the remainder of the 60 seconds. So if it takes 5 seconds to do the two reps, youll rest the remaining 55 seconds.

After that, youll do another two reps, rest for the remainder of the 60 seconds, and continue until the 20 minutes are up. This style is known as EMOM (every minute on the minute) and can allow you to get a lot of volume, use a heavy weight, and feel like youre doing cardio.

Study finds low and high GI diets boost endurance performance over low-carb diets – News-Medical.Net

A recentSports Medicine Openstudy conducted a randomized controlled trial to evaluate how varying carbohydrate intake and the glycemic index (GI) impact performance in endurance training regimens in men.

Study:Effects of a 10-Week Exercise and Nutritional Intervention with Variable Dietary Carbohydrates and Glycaemic Indices on Substrate Metabolism, Glycogen Storage, and Endurance Performance in Men: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Image Credit: Lucky Business / Shutterstock.com

Carbohydrates are crucial in maintaining performance during long sessions of endurance exercise. Optimal metabolic flexibility combined with full glycogen stores are essential prerequisites for high endurance performance.

Energy requirements in the muscles increase dramatically while transitioning from rest to exercise. At this time, fats or carbohydrates are used to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP). With the growing intensity of exercise, carbohydrates become the key energy source, thus replacing fat.

A long-term diet low in carbohydrates and high in fat (LCHF) increases maximal fat oxidation at rest and during submaximal exercise conditions. Previously, the LCHF diet has been shown to improve the respiratory exchange ratio (RER) but not the time to exhaustion (TTE), even when glycogen stores were replenished shortly before the start of the competition.

Therefore, performance at high intensity is restricted due to reduced glycogen stores and mitigated carbohydrate metabolism. Thus, the LCHF diet may impact physical performance by reducing training capacity, exercise economy, and well-being when exercising at higher intensities, in addition to increasing the risk of fatigue, poor concentration, and gastrointestinal (GI) effects.

A high-carbohydrate diet with low GI has the potential to overcome the limitations often associated with the LCHF diet. In fact, recent studies have reported that this type of diet can lead to improved metabolic flexibility and, as a result, superior performance improvements during an incremental cycling test. However, few long-term studies have been conducted that assess the impact of a low GI diet relative to an LCHF diet on performance outcomes and metabolic flexibility.

The current 10-week interventional study aimed to assess and compare the effects of the LCHF diet, a carbohydrate-rich high-GI diet (HIGH-GI), and a carbohydrate-rich low-GI diet (LOW-GI) on metabolic parameters, running economy (RE), peak running speed (PRS), and peak oxygen consumption. These parameters were assessed by measuring muscle energy stores, a five-kilometer time trial (TT) performance, and a graded exercise test.

The testable hypothesis was that the LOW-GI diet can influence fat oxidation without restricting carbohydrate oxidation to a similar extent as the LCHF diet. Furthermore, the LOW-GI and HIGH-GI groups were hypothesized to experience similar improvements in TT and PRS. Muscle glycogen stores were expected to decline in the LCHF diet, whereas no significant difference was anticipated in the HIGH-GI and LOW-GI groups.

The LOW-GI diet led to reduced energy intake, decreased blood lactate concentrations during exercise, higher values in the graded exercise test, maintenance of glycogen stores, and improved TT performance.

The LCHF diet also enhanced fat oxidation in the incremental test. However, due to insufficient carbohydrate provisions, the LCHF diet altered carbohydrate oxidation, muscle glycogen restoration, and training adaptions at higher intensities.

HIGH-GI improved performance at high intensities and increased muscle glycogen content. However, after 10 weeks, fat oxidation was impaired.

Importantly, the LCHF diet could negatively affect long-term health status despite its promising effects on fat oxidation and body composition. The lower intake of essential macronutrients and high-fat content could contribute to these adverse effects; therefore, this type of diet should be recommended with appropriate caution.

Plasma lactate concentrations were reduced in the LOW-GI group, whereas carbohydrate metabolism was unaltered during higher intensities. These two factors, coupled with the facilitation of fat utilization, resulted in improved metabolic flexibility.

In the HIGH-GI group, muscle glycogen levels increased significantly. However, while responding to different exercise intensities, the changes in metabolism could impair the ability to switch from carbohydrate to fat oxidation.

Overall, the study findings provide evidence that relative to the LCHF or HIGH-GI diet, the LOW-GI diet could lead to beneficial changes in substrate oxidation during extended periods of exercise and improve endurance performance.

Diet monitoring was conducted by self-reported 24-hour recalls, which could have led to recall, reporting, and training biases. However, these calls were completed twice a week, which should reduce the probability of random errors. Furthermore, an additional food frequency questionnaire was used to minimize errors and assess diet status before the study.

No differences across diets were noted during the TT, which could be attributed to running engaging more muscle mass than cycling. Furthermore, the gastrocnemius muscle is not depleted for glycogen, and less glycogen is broken down in the leg muscles.

Future studies are needed to account for different sexes and use different macronutrient intake periodizations to better understand the mechanisms associated with the benefits of these different diets. Metabolomics studies could also elucidate the ongoing adaptions in metabolism.

Health benefits of high-fiber diets – Tri-County News

Dear Dietitian,

I just read an article that said a high-fiber diet helps prevent colon cancer, but other articles on this topic have said the opposite. Can you help clear things up?

Joseph

Dear Joseph,

Scientific studies are often confusing because the results are different. Before something becomes clear in science, it has to be tested several times in different cultures in various parts of the world. It must also be tested on men and women of different ages. The -studies must reveal the same results to be accepted as valid by the scientific community. Sometimes this takes several years.

Nutrition studies seem even more confusing because nutrition is in its infancy. We have barely scratched the surface of most nutrition topics. When a new topic is studied, results often vary until the matter is hammered out. The good news is that we are learning more about nutrition now than at any other time in history.

A study of the role of fiber in disease prevention was published in The Lancet in February 2019. Researchers found a 16-24% decrease in rates of heart disease, strokes, type 2 diabetes, and colorectal cancer when comparing people with the highest dietary fiber consumption with those who ate the least amount. Furthermore, there was a 15-30% reduction in death from any cause in the high-fiber group. It is important to note the study was conducted on fiber in food, not supplements.(1) As with most nutrition studies, this was an observational study, which does not show cause and effect. Even so, it strongly suggests that fiber is a crucial ingredient of a healthy diet.

Researchers assigned high fiber intake as 25 to 29 grams daily. Americans eat about half that amount. When increasing fiber, do so gradually, and drink plenty of water; otherwise, you may feel uncomfortable, and the gas your body produces may make you unpopular.

Good sources of fiber include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. As always, choose foods you enjoy. Start with highfiber cereal, one with 5 grams of fiber or more per serving. Add three fruits each day to increase fiber by another 12 grams. Youre already up to 17 grams. Next, have two slices of whole wheat bread on your sandwich at lunch (2 grams of fiber). Include one-half cup of beans (7 grams). Finally, enjoy one-half cup of green peas (4 grams) at dinner, and you have 30 grams of fiber for the day. Bon apptit.

Until next time, be healthy.

Dear Dietitian

CBD For Weight Loss: 5 Products That May Help You Reach Your Goals – Seattlemet Discover

CBD is famous as an all-natural potential remedy for anxiety, sleep, and pain. We can now add weight loss to its long list of potential benefits, as more studies have shown its ability to aid in maintaining a healthy weight.

In addition to these, countless people around the world are having fantastic results in their journey to lose weight, simply by incorporating a daily CBD supplement.

According to the CDC, maintaining a healthy body weight isnt just about following a healthy diet. Its about cultivating a healthier lifestyle, one that includes stress management, among other things.

This is one of the reasons CBD is so fantastic for your weight loss journey. Adding CBD to your routine is a little lifestyle change that can lead to feeling better and ultimately achieving your weight loss goals.

We searched for the best hemp-derived CBD products, specifically to aid in your journey to lose a few pounds. Using a solid list of criteria, we selected the most elite supplements with the best results. Heres who came out on top:

CBD, which is derived from the cannabis plant, is a live phytochemical called a cannabinoid. After CBD is absorbed by your body, it binds with whats called the endocannabinoid system or ECS.

All mammals have an endocannabinoid system, which is essentially a network of receptors throughout the body thats responsible for regulating its most important processes. These include sleep, pain response, inflammatory response, eating, and more.

As far as the ability to help you lose weight goes, note that the endocannabinoid system, which CBD supports, plays a role in eating and metabolism.

From what we know, CBD positively affects both lipid and glucose metabolism which potentially makes it a fantastically all-natural remedy for weight loss.

That said, the reality is that there is currently limited scientific research that fully supports CBD for weight management. But the studies that are out there are extremely promising:

Apart from these, we reviewed a large collection of scientific literature that shows CBD is good for sleep health and stress relief. Prioritizing sleep and stress relief are key to losing weight and keeping it off. This is because sleep deprivation and high stress increase cortisol levels, which can make it difficult or impossible to lose weight.

In short, CBD has been proven to benefit metabolism and encouraging studies suggest it may help in maintaining a healthy body weight.

Here are five of our favorite CBD products to help you in your journey to lose weight (and that wont promote weight gain).

Our #1 selection for the most effective CBD supplement to help you lose weight goes to Zaturals CBD Appethyl. When it comes to kicking cravings and curbing appetite, CBD appethyl is second to none. This is a truly unique product that you cant find anywhere else.

Heres how it works: First, you get the overall wellness benefits of CBD, including a calm energy that can help you get through your workday as well as your workout. Next, Zatural incorporates appethyl, an all-natural weight loss compound developed in Sweden.

Appethyl are phytochemicals called thylakoids found naturally in spinach. Swedish studies have shown appethyl to help aid in fat digestion, boost metabolism, appetite control, and those pesky cravings for junk food.

To use, blend 1 tablespoon with your beverage of choice once to twice daily. Zatural recommends taking CBD appethyl with healthy fats like nuts and avocados for best results.

We also recommend taking the Focus Melts in the afternoon to combat that after-lunch slump that can make you tired and craving sweets. If you need extra motivation to work out, try taking the Focus Melts about a half hour before hitting the gym. These are fast-acting tablets that will give you a pep in your step in no time.

The secret behind Feals Focus Melts are cannabinoids CBC and THCv. Both are non-psychoactive and close relatives of CBD. Both CBC and THCv are known to promote overall wellness as well as boosts in both energy and cognition.

A big part of healthy weight loss is detoxing the body from whats keeping the weight on. The cleaner your system is, the easier it is to reduce appetite.

One of the worlds most popular all-natural detoxes is apple cider vinegar. Its also frequently used as a way to control appetite and sugar cravings.

What better pairing, then, are CBD and ACV to help you stay on track with your weight loss goals? These CBD gummies with ACV from CBDfx are one-of-a-kind and we love the way they taste.

CBDfx provides a whopping 50mg CBD in each serving, enough to help you feel the results in less time than other CBD products. Also in the mix is vitamin B12 to support energy and fat burn. The most potent CBD for losing weight that we found are these full spectrum softgels from CBDistillery. CBDistillery is an old-school CBD manufacturer out of Colorado that strictly uses local, organically grown hemp. They tend to have simple, really clean ingredients to let their potent CBD speak for itself.

As far as how they make you feel, you can expect a relaxing sensation. If you take them at night, youll drift off to sleep. When taken during the day, you may feel a mood boost and mental calm.

Remember that CBD has been studied to help boost the metabolism. We love that these pure CBD capsules give you a potent dosage thats super convenient. Keep them in your gym bag, next to your bed, or in your suitcase when you travel.

CBD products are not all the same. You have to look for quality indicators if you want a supplement thats clean and that will work.

Finding a CBD product for weight loss requires an extra level of scrutiny. For example, you wont want to get high-sugar gummies to help you curb cravings while trying to shed a few pounds.

We created the following methodology to vet the CBD products at our disposal for the best possible results. Heres what we came up with and what you should keep in mind, as well, when out shopping for weight loss CBD on your own:

CBD is one of the most pivotal plant-based wellness discoveries of our time. That said, where CBD hemp comes from and how its cultivated and sourced matters, especially if you want results for weight loss.

To select the best CBD weight loss products for our list, we required that each brand use CBD made from hemp grown in the US with sustainable methods. Sustainable methods include organic protocols and foregoing chemical pesticides and other toxins. (The exception to this was the Feals focus melts, which use cannabinoids that come from orange peels.)

We also required a clean CBD extraction method, like CO2, for example. Brands that use noxious solvents like butane were not considered eligible.

Checking out the verified reviews before trying a new supplement is always a good idea. But in this case, we had to be uber-focused on testimonials that spoke to weight loss, specifically. Not all the CBD brands on our list necessarily market their CBD supplements to help people lose weight, so we were able to uncover a lot about their effectiveness within the context of verified user reviews.

Our two cents? Dont ever trust a CBD product from a brand that does not provide evidence of lab testing. Read that again.

For our list, we made things a little harder on the CBD brands by requiring industry-best standards for laboratory testing. For each CBD weight loss product, manufacturers had to show a third-party lab test performed in the past 6 months for potency. This is also known as the cannabinoid profile which shows the different concentrations of each cannabinoid in the extract.

Furthermore, we required a contaminants test for the CBD extract used in each weight loss supplement. This panel had to include negative results for pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbial impurities.

Finally, the best CBD weight loss supplements will include additional ingredients that support weight loss. For example, we included products that contain apple cider vinegar, appethyl, and other plant-based ingredients to support healthy weight management.

We also kept our eyes on quality, only accepting all-natural ingredients. CBD weight loss products with verified non-GMO and/or organic botanics were given higher marks.

Now that you know what quality indicators to look for, lets talk more about the specifics that will help you get the best CBD for you. That means your goals and your current situation, not blindly selecting a supplement marketed as a catch-all.

Whenever youre shopping for CBD in general, remember these considerations to improve your chances of getting the results you want:

How much CBD total is in your CBD product? How many milligrams of CBD are there per serving? This is one of the first things youll want to know. If you want to take 10mg CBD once per day and your product has 300mg total, this will be a months supply.

TIP: Buy in larger concentrations to get more value for your dollar. Most CBD products last for 6 months or longer when stored properly. If you stop taking it every day, you can always keep CBD in your medicine cabinet for little aches and anxieties.

CBD is known to provide an all-natural solution for pain, anxiety, nausea, and more. A standard, high-quality CBD oil will come along with these benefits. However, we recommend getting a targeted product if youre using CBD for a specific issue. Or, you can take a look at the verified reviews to see the more specific results users are experiencing.

TIP: Look for additional supporting ingredients to naturally help with your wellness issue. For example, if you want a CBD product for sleep, youll want to see another soothing botanical like chamomile on the ingredient list.

CBD comes in a variety of forms, from CBD oils to CBD gummies, each of which people prefer for different reasons, like texture or method of consumption.

Here are the most common ways to take a CBD supplement:

Unflavored CBD oil tastes like cannabis, with that distinct earthy taste and aroma. Not everyone likes it, and these days, you can get high-quality CBD in a wide range of flavors that help it go down more smoothly. Delicious CBD gummies come in virtually every flavor you can think of.

TIP: Especially if youre trying to lose weight, we recommend sticking with all-natural flavoring from ingredients like fruit extract.

Some CBD supplements are pricier than others. This will depend on the brand, the concentration, the form of CBD, etc. However, you can get high-quality CBD at a variety of price points, so whatever your budget, theres something for you.

TIP: To save, sign up for the subscribe & save offered by most CBD brands. You can cancel the subscription at any time, and youll automatically get free shipping plus a discount on the retail price.

CBD is considered federally legal, provided that the CBD product contains 0.3% or less THC by dry weight. However, certain types of CBD products like CBD vapes and CBD flowers are regulated or restricted in some states.

Sustainable weight loss requires lifestyle changes. Getting eight hours of sleep per night as well as minimizing stress can help keep your cortisol levels low, helping you maintain a healthier weight. Youll also want to maintain a healthy diet while incorporating exercise into your daily routine to reduce unhealthy body weight gain.

Here is a brief list of how to boost your weight loss journey and reduce unhealthy weight gain:

Additionally, you can always speak to a professional or find a health and wellness space. Having a community of positivity around you will help boost your mood and give you inspiration on your journey to a healthier you.

CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid for most people. Unlike THC found in traditional marijuana, CBD will not get you high, no matter how much you take. In case of overconsumption, youll simply fall asleep.

The journey to losing weight is multi-faceted and deeply personal. It requires lifestyle changes that can range from something minor to major shifts in your day-to-day life.

Our verdict: CBD can be that little thing you do to support sustainable weight loss and even better, enhance your overall wellness. Its a little change that doesnt require any willpower on your part.

The better you feel inside and out, the more apt you are to keep up with your weight loss program and reach your goals. CBDs properties for weight control, sleep health, anxiety, and more can help you do just that.

Pressure from family, media to lose weight as a teen can have ‘long-lasting effects’ on body image. Here’s what to do … – Yahoo Life

New research shows that negative conversations and attitudes around weight can have a lasting effect on people specifically, those who feel pressure to lose weight in their teens can struggle with body image decades later.

The study, which was published in the Lancet Regional Health, analyzed data from more than 4,000 31-year-olds who participated in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, which is a cohort study of children born in the former county of Avon, England, during 1991 and 1992. The researchers analyzed each participant for a range of factors, including their weight as a child and current views of their bodies.

The researchers found that people who felt pressure as teenagers from family to lose weight, experienced weight-related teasing by family members and felt pressure from the media to lose weight had higher levels of internalized weight stigma by age 31, regardless of their body mass index (BMI). (Internalized weight stigma is when a person takes negative views or beliefs about body weight and applies them to themselves.) There was also a link between being bullied as a teen and young adult and having internalized weight stigma.

Females and people who did not identify as heterosexual were most likely to internalize weight stigma than others, along with people who spent more of their 20s not in education, employment or training, or whose mothers had fewer educational qualifications. Ultimately, the researchers concluded that "pressure to lose weight from family and the media in adolescence may have long-lasting effects on internalized weight stigma."

Weight bias is common. Two in five Americans with a BMI that's considered higher than "normal" have internalized weight bias and the latest study found that even people with normal BMIs experience this internal struggle over their own weight.

"This adds to the evidence that it really matters how we talk about weight in families, schools and society at large, because the effects can be long-lasting," lead study author Amanda Hughes, a research fellow at Bristol Medical School, tells Yahoo Life.

Dr. Daniel Ganjian, a pediatrician at Providence Saint Johns Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., tells Yahoo Life that teens are "particularly vulnerable" to hearing talk about weight. "Teens are developing their sense of self-identity and are more likely to be influenced by comments from family, friends and media," he says.

Media can also "present unrealistic beauty standards that can make teens feel insecure about their bodies," he says. If a teenager experiences weight stigma during this time in their life, it can end up being "emotionally damaging," leading to a negative body image, Ganjian says.

Hughes points out that the study participants were all born around 1991 and grew up before social media took off. As a result, their influences came from TV and magazines. But today's kids are exposed to those elements, as well as social media, which can also influence body image. It's just unclear exactly how social media impacts teens around weight. "Social media may increase pressure on teens, but it can also be a source of support, and can be used to promote body positivity," Hughes says. Ultimately, more research is needed to see how social media affects teens when it comes to weight, she says.

Still, "content which says that 'thin equals good' and 'not thin equals bad' tells teens that their value as people is dependent on their weight," Hughes says.

Teens are "under a lot of pressure" and they're starting to form their adult identity, Hughes adds. "In this context, teens may be extra vulnerable to messaging that undermines positive self-concept," she says.

"Teens are particularly at risk for pressures from weight bias because they are at a point in their lives where they are searching for belonging, affirmation, identity and self-confidence," Dr. Danielle Grant, a pediatrician at Texas Children's Pediatrics, tells Yahoo Life. "Pressure and teasing about weight can easily escalate into bullying and cyberbullying."

There are a few things teens and their families can do to fight this stigma. First is to develop a healthy relationship with food and exercise, which families can also promote as a whole, Ganjian says. He also recommends "surrounding yourself with positive people who support you for who you are."

"Teens can also unfollow accounts on social media when they notice they cause them to feel negatively about themselves," suggests Grant.

If weight is a concern for a teen, Ganjian suggests talking to a trusted adult, like a parent, counselor or doctor. But families should also try to have positive conversations around weight when it comes to teens and to be mindful that their words have an impact, Thea Gallagher, a clinical assistant professor at NYU Langone Health and co-host of the Mind in View podcast, tells Yahoo Life. "We need to be very careful about how weight is discussed at home not only the weight of children but your own weight," she says. Hughes agrees. "The family we grow up in is, after all, a huge influence on how we see ourselves," she says.

Gallagher recommends that families steer the conversation away from comments about shape, weight, appearance and attractiveness and focus on positive conversations about health and what your body can do for you. But Ganjian says it's also important not to be dismissive of teens' thoughts and feelings about weight. "Create a supportive environment where teens feel comfortable talking about their concerns about weight and body image," he says.

Hughes says that there needs to be a cultural shift around perceptions about weight too. "Its the responsibility of society as a whole, not just of teens, to remember that a persons worth is not about their weight," she says. "Be mindful of how you talk about weight this can have a real impact on the people around you."

Gallagher points out that a lot of people have internalized some societal views about weight. "We're all a little messed up around shape and weight," she says. "A lot of people don't realize how much this impacts them."

Doing your best to pivot negative thoughts about weight toward positive ones, like focusing on how your legs help you get around or your arms allow you to lift heavy objects, can be helpful, Gallagher says. "But if weight is coming to your mind often or you're adjusting your behaviors and it's taking up a significant portion of your thinking, it's probably worth talking to a therapist about," she says. "A lot of us have a complicated relationship with food, shape and weight. It's important to unpack it."

His addiction prompted his mom and grandma to kick him out, leaving him homeless for quite some time and even resulting in him getting arrested.

Fortunately, Charles went to rehab and got clean a few years back. But this shining achievement was eclipsed by the fact that he seemed to have replaced drugs with food.

When we meet Charles, who is in his early 30s, he is living with his brother, Brad, and sister, Cheyana. Brad's full-time job has become taking care of Charles, who cannot make himself food and can only walk a few steps at a time before needing to rest.

Charles's journey on My 600-lb Life was an interesting one. He and Dr. Now butted heads several times and Charles often didn't follow Dr. Now's directions. Usually, when this happens on the show, the individual ends up gaining weight and getting farther away from their goal.

However, Charles did lose weight, and Dr. Now did end up approving him for weight loss surgery. But Charles had seemingly gotten so comfortable at home with Brad, who kept him on track, that he declined the offer. He said didn't want to move to Houston for the surgery and leave his family, even if it was only temporary.

At the end of the episode, Charles said he wanted to continue his weight loss efforts in Everett and possibly reconsider surgery in the future. That said, where is Charles now? Did he ever get bariatric surgery, and was he able to continue losing weight on his own?

Since his time on My 600-lb Life, Charles appears to be doing very well. According to his Facebook profile, he is still living in Everett, Wash., and has continued to lose weight.

Charles has been spending time with his dogs and recently took them to the dog park, illustrating that he's still making an effort to go outside and do more activities.

However, the biggest update is Charles's current weight. At the beginning of his episode, he was believed to be over 700 pounds. After adopting Dr. Now's diet plan and developing an exercise routine, he was down to 604 pounds by the end of the episode, losing well over 100 pounds on his journey.

That being said, in September 2023, Charles revealed some exciting news: "Omg down to 385," he wrote on Facebook.

It's unclear if this substantial weight loss was strictly from dieting or if Charles did get bariatric surgery, which would likely expedite his weight loss. However, we are glad to hear that Charles hasn't given up and is continuing to lose weight.

‘Lose weight quick’ online schemes don’t work. Dr. Mike offers these 5 tips instead – Yahoo News UK

Season 9 of the CNN podcastChasing Life With Dr. Sanjay Guptaexplores the intersection between body weight and health. We delve into a wide range of topics, including the evolutionary reasons behind why losing weight is so hard and how to talk to kids about weight. You can listen here.

(CNN) The internet and social media are rifewith marketing ploys: Its hard to surf the Web or scroll through platforms such as Instagram, Facebook or TikTok without having a slew of ads pop up left, right and center about exactly what you were just viewing. The cookies and algorithms (and other tricks of the trade) follow online users everywhere.

The bombardment seems particularly merciless if you are searching for lose weight or eat healthy or watching any adjacent reel, story or video. Advertisers and influencers are eager to get your eyeballs on a product, protocol or procedure. Sometimes whats promised seems like it could, maybe, work but how can you really tell if its legit? Whose advice should you follow?

Enter Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, who has made it his mission to debunk medical misinformation and educate people. Better known as Dr. Mike, he is a practicing family medicine physician in Chatham, New Jersey, who shares his expertise with millions of YouTube and social media followers. These so-called snake oil sellers and their dubious miracle cures are not new, he said; he calls them I Know All experts, a term he coined in a 2017 TED Talk.

I think its not a new phenomenon. Ponce de Lenwas searching for the fountain of youth many years ago, and yet were still doing that to this day, Dr. Mike recently told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on the podcast Chasing Life. I just think that the strategies have changed because we have this new added tool of social media that traditionally doctors, who are evidence-based, have shied away from.

Dr. Mike said the I Know All experts and their too-good-to-be-true products flourish in the gray zone where science does not yet have clear answers and social media and the internet amplify their voices.

Story continues

It allowed a prime opportunity for these IKA experts to come in and claim that they have all the answers. And thats really just a form of trust hacking through mass confidence, as if they know whats going on with you, he said.

(Thats) in dark contrast to what a physician is trained to do: We come in and we dont claim to know the exact diagnosis. We create one diagnosis along with a differential of other options. It could be, when we recommend the treatment, we hedge and say it works X percentage of the time. But these IKA experts trust-hack and say, I know whats wrong with you. I know this is going to work for you. Take my miracle potion. And that sells very, very well.

To listen to more of Dr. Mikes conversation and learn why certain seemingly cant hurt, might help approaches to weight loss such as tummy teas, fad diets and colon cleanses could actually be dangerous, click on the player below.

With so much misinformation floating around the internet and social media especially around the topic of weight loss what can you do to make sure youre not going down an ill-advised rabbit hole? Dr. Mike has these five tips.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Dont trust 99% of things you see on social media; be a healthy skeptic. Thats how l like to say it, said Dr. Mike, noting that there are many sources of information both governmental, such as the US Centers for Disease Control and Preventions FoodSafety.gov, and academic, such as the site run by Harvard Medical School that are trustworthy. (Those websites usually end in .gov, .edu and .org.)

There was a funny commercial I forgot what it was for; I believe insurance and there was a woman going on a date with a gentleman, and he completely lied on his profile. And he was, like, Always trust what you see on the internet. And thats a lot (of) how I feel about supplements online and people talking about supplements online: That if it feels too good to be true, allow that inner skeptic in you to further test it, either by doing some more in-depth research on your own if youre comfortable, or bringing it up at your next visit with your primary care doctor.

Speaking of primary care physicians, prioritize building a relationship with a good medical professional.

Thats the biggest tip I would give: to create a long-lasting relationship with a primary care doctor, said Dr. Mike, adding that he sees people in their 20s and 30s using urgent care as their primary care source.

Thats not what urgent care is meant to be, he said. Its not going to give you good outcomes. Youre not going to form a good relationship. Youre not going to get the benefits of having a longitudinal relationship with a single provider. So, those are important.

Dr. Mike said such a relationship is especially important when it comes to weight loss, because how in the world can you help someone sustain weight loss if theres no continuity of care? Its, by definition, mandatory for it.

When it comes to weight and weight loss, there are many important factors involved, so dont fall into the trap of obsessing over one, whether that be the one right diet, the one perfect food or the one must-take supplement.

Zoom out of just thinking about, What I can take or what I can eat? and understand that theres a lot of other things that impact your weight, Dr. Mike said.

So, getting seven to nine hours of sleep as an adult, during the same hours of the night, consistently is going to be important for good weight control. Getting 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity is going to be important.

Dr. Mike also suggests making small adjustments to your daily habits: Skip the elevator and use the stairs instead, and for short distances, leave the car in the garage and do errands on foot. These things are going to add up and actually lead you to have better control of your weight, he said.

When it comes to weight, dont underestimate the role of your mental health.

(Make) sure that you get help when it comes to mental health issues and concerns, Dr. Mike said. Because if youre not in a good mental health place, its very easy to have food become almost a self-treatment for either unhappiness or anxiety. And those conditions both depression and generalized anxiety disorder are treatable conditions, by either getting therapy, perhaps some medication if thats warranted in your condition.

And you might not even connect weight and mental health but it plays an incredibly potent role in helping you not just get to a healthy weight but stay and maintain a healthy weight.

Understand some basic principles about the food you consume, so you dont, for example, vilify or lionize a single food or ingredient.

For example, Dr. Mike said he recently had a guest on his podcast who tried to equate a chocolate kiss to a grape.

We have to put that in perspective. While you may compare them based on their sugar content, thats one way to categorize them, Dr. Mike said. But then if you compare them to how many nutrients that are valuable to us like vitamins, fiber, etc. in grapes versus chocolate, the grapes are clearly healthier.

So avoid trying to oversimplify nutrition with these hard-and-fast rules, and instead just try and give yourself a general understanding of how foods work. Because when youre not as strict and youre not as hard-and-fast in your thinking about food, you actually create a healthier, long-lasting relationship with food that will give you better outcomes in maintaining a healthy weight.

We hope these five tips help you think more clearly about food, weight and what you see or hear about them on the internet. Listen to the full episodehere. And join us next week on theChasing Life podcast when we explore how different diets (keto vs. low fat vs. vegan) and the timing of when we eat can affect our weight and health.

Rebel Wilson Says She Received More Attention for Weight Loss Than Any Movie She’s Ever Done – Marie Claire

Rebel Wilson is opening up about the way people started treating her following her weight loss.

In an exclusive interview with People and ahead of the release of her tell-all memoir Rebel Rising, the actress discussed the beginning of her "year of health" during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, she says she slowly lost weight in order to "drastically change" and eventually harvest her eggs.

(Wilson welcomed a baby girl on Nov. 7, 2022, via surrogate.)

I was getting quite a lot of attention for the weight loss, she told the publication. I thought: Gosh, people are so intrigued by this. Literally, I got more attention for weight loss than any movie I'd ever done.

The Pitch Perfect star went on to say that while she knows "that's superficial," it "was nice" to receive the attention.

"I went, Oh, is this what hot people experience all the time? Their life must be so bloody blessed, she went on to add, noting that people would hold the door for her and pay her more attention as a result of her smaller size.

While it was hurtful to realize how little people cared while she was larger, Wilson admitted that the added attention was "such positive reinforcement" that ended up motivating her to continue maintaining her healthy routine.

It was interesting to know exactly what it's like to be invisible sexually and then to be visible, she added. "I've experienced both sides of the coin.

In the age of fad diets and Ozempic, the comedian added that it's common for people to "think that there's some magic pill, or some sick special diet, or exercise regime or whatever" that will magically help a person lose weight or get healthy. (It's worth noting that losing weight and being healthy are not always the same thing. Size is not an indicator of any one person's health.)

As she prepares to release her memoir into the world, Wilson says she hopes her book and her own lived experience will give people the message, if they're like me and an emotional eater, that it's not about that stuff."

"It's literally about working at a healthier way to deal with your emotions, and there is no magic solution," she added. "And then maybe me telling my story might encourage them to do the same and make healthy change in their lives."

An insight into the weight loss drugs Wegovy and Ozempic – The Jerusalem Post

Millions of children and adults around the world today suffer from obesity, an epidemic that has concerned the medical world for the last decade. The Instagram and TikTok generation may brush off this issue in the name of body positivity, but obesity has crucial medical consequences. Being overweight puts a person at significant risk factor for a wide range of diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer.

About three years ago, a Danish pharmaceutical company, Novo Nordisk, initiated a revolution. The company has devoted most of its activity to creating drugs for the treatment of diabetes called Wegovy. Patients began to report that its injections caused not only a balance in blood sugar levels, but also a feeling of satiety, weight loss, and even a balance in fat levels. Further, the company began studies to confirm patient reports that Wegovy did indeed lead to significant weight loss.

In 2021, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the marketing of Wegovy, which led to a decrease of about 20% in body weight for patients of the injection. As a result, Americans pounced on the shot and emptied the shelves. Wegovy was only approved in the US at the time, and doctors began to prescribe its "sister", the Ozempic injection, which is made of the same substance but with less than half the dose.

Ozempic was not as effective as Wegovy but still became a hit in Israel. Since then, thousands of Israelis have been treated with Ozempic. The Health Ministry was not enthusiastic about the fact that Ozempic, which is generally intended for diabetics, is also used by those who want to lose weight. Despite this, more and more results of Ozempic, which led to significant weight loss and an effect similar to stomach shortening, caused the ministry to turn a blind eye and agree to this interim treatment.

The Health Ministry approved the marketing of Wegovy in Israel, but it won't be cheap at a monthly cost of about NIS 1,200. In comparison, Ozempic costs about NIS 340 per month. Saxenda, the oldest weight loss shot but the least effective of them all, costs about NIS 500 per month. There are more new weight loss drugs that are expected to flood the market and create a revolution similar to Wegovy, but their arrival has been delayed mainly due to the current war.

The Wegovy and Ozempic injections include a substance similar to the GLP-1 hormone, which plays many roles throughout the body. The hormone causes a feeling of satiety by slowing down the emptying of the stomach, reduces the blood sugar levels in the body, and in ways that are not yet completely clear, also helps reduce fats.In recent months, it has become clear that these injections also reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Ultimately though, there is no miracle recipe for weight loss. Studies have shown that stopping treatment with weight loss injections causes a steep increase in weight, sometimes even more than the initial weight. The pharmaceutical companies have not yet tested the long-term effect of the injections, but what is known is that in very rare cases they may increase the risk of pancreatitis and thyroid tumors.

These injections are prohibited for pregnant women or those planning to conceive in the near future. Most importantly, the weight loss injections will not work without a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. Without a low-calorie diet and exercise, these injections will have almost no effect on an individual's weight long term.

Those who suffer from obesity (calculated as a BMI - height divided by weight squared - of 30 or higher), should consult their doctors about suitability for treatment with weight loss injections. Before and during the treatment, it is recommended to go for consistent blood tests, which include the monitoring of pancreatic enzymes, sugar levels, blood lipid levels, and the thyroid gland. These points of course are to be combined with regular exercise and a healthy diet.
