Long-term study shows struggle with weight loss in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetics – News-Medical.Net

A register-based study from Finland identified three distinct BMI trajectory groups among patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. In a four-year follow-up, most patients followed a stable trajectory without much weight change. Only 10% of patients lost weight, whereas 3% gained weight. Mean BMI exceeded the threshold of obesity in all groups at baseline. Weight loss is a central treatment goal in type 2 diabetes, but the study shows that few patients succeed in it.

The study was carried out by researchers at the University of Eastern Finland, and the results were published in Clinical Epidemiology.

Patients belonging to each trajectory group were followed up for another eight years for diabetes complications. During the follow-up, 13% of all patients developed microvascular complications, 21% developed macrovascular complications and 20% of patients deceased. The risk of microvascular complications was 2.9 times higher and the risk of macrovascular complications 2.5 times higher among patients with an increasing BMI compared to those with a stable BMI. Micro- and macrovascular complications of diabetes can include, for example, retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy, as well as cardiovascular diseases.

These results underscore the significance of continuous BMI monitoring and weight management in patients with type 2 diabetes. Tailored treatments and support with lifestyle changes are crucial for efficiently preventing weight gain and reducing the risk of diabetes complications."

The study was carried out in North Karelia, Finland, using electronic health records from both primary and specialised health care. The study included a total of 889 adults with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes in 2011 or 2012. The participants were grouped based on individual BMI trajectories from the diagnosis until 2014. Risks for microvascular complications, macrovascular complications, any diabetes complications and all-cause mortality from 2015 to 2022 across BMI trajectory groups were estimated.

Oatzempica mixed beverage that social media users claim helps with weight lossisnt anything new or groundbreaking. Nor does the TikTok disinformation cycle have any shortage of controversial or unsubstantiated beauty fads and nutritional claims. However, the oatzempic challenge is specifically giving me flashbacks to the horrible get thin quick by solely drinking your calories culture of the early aughts Because, well, thats all it is.

Despite its punny name, oatzempic has nothing to do with Ozempic, Wegovy, or any other weight-loss injections: Its just a drinkable meal replacement. Whats more, unlike actual GLP-1 medications, the oatzempic drink is not an FDA-approved medication, nor are there studies, doctors, or dietitians who can speak to its efficacy or safety. Further, doctors and dietitians dont cosign the oatzempic drink challenge as any form of health, wellness, or even weight-loss regimen.

Heres everything you need to know about the oatzempic drink youre seeing all over your FYP, as explained by a doctor and nutritionist.

As we said before, oatzempic is not Ozempic. Its merely a mixed beverage comprising oats, lime, water, and cinnamon. On its own, thatswell, unappetizing, but nothing too egregious, right?

Two months of healthy weight loss should amount to somewhere between 8 and 16 poundsnot even close to 40.

Whats more, Dr. Cardel adds, is that while pairing this drink with your breakfast or having it as a snack may be okay, she doesnt suggest it it as a meal replacement It is not a sustainable approach for long-term weight loss or maintenance.

So, does drinking oatzempic really cause weight loss? It may be possiblebut not in any healthy way. Exclusively consuming oatsand no other foodwould likely put participants at a significant caloric deficit, which can and does lead to weight loss. However, it also puts them at a steep nutritional deficiency.

In diet culture, low-carbohydrate diets are hailed as weight-loss wonders, and we know them by name: Atkins, South Beach, and paleo. The ketogenic diet, shortened to keto, is one of those low-carb diets. The difference between the keto diet and others is that while one group advises replacing carbohydrates with protein, the keto diet swaps carbs with fats. But although results appear to happen fast, this diet, which has a history as a medical treatment, comes with some health risks.

When done correctly, the lack of carbs consumed on a keto diet forces the body into a metabolic state called ketosis. In this state, the liver produces a substance called ketones from stored fats. These ketones then supply the body with energy in place of carbohydratesthe bodys usual source of energywhich leads to rapid weight loss in many people. But, is that a good thing? And is the keto diet actually healthy?

Its effective for weight loss because it removes so many foods from the diet and is an extremely restrictive diet. Any diet that eliminates entire food groups will be weight loss-inducing, Dana Ellis Hunnes, PhD, MPH, RD, explains to VegNews. This is not a healthy diet, however.

The keto diet that sends your body into a state of ketosis isnt meant for everyday people. Physicians introduced it to the medical world back in the 1920s to treat children with epilepsy and seizure disorders and as an adjunct therapy to reduce the risk of seizures. Not for the average person just trying to lose weight, adds Hunnes. Most fad-followers of a keto diet are not actually in ketosis, unless they are being closely followed by a dietitian who knows how to develop a ketogenic plan.

Generally, a keto diet is 70 to 80 percent fats, 5 to 10 percent carbohydrates, and 10 to 20 percent protein. According to Harvard Health, this adds up to 165 grams of fat, 40 grams of carbohydrates, and 75 grams of protein. To put these numbers into perspective, half a cup of cooked long-grain brown rice contains nearly 26 grams of carbohydrates. And, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that you get around 25 to 35 percent of your daily calorie intake from fats.

To get into more specifics, the keto diet includes meat, eggs, fatty fish, high-fat dairy products, nuts and seeds, avocados, healthy oils, green beans, and vegetables that are members of the cabbage family. It restricts grains and starches (such as rice, pasta, and bread), all other vegetables, tubers, most fruit, beans and legumes, processed low-fat and sugar-free products, highly refined oils, sugary foods and drinks, and alcohol.

When it comes to sustaining a healthy weight, this fast-acting eating plan might be best left in the graveyard of fad diets.

But, you may want to consider a whole food plant-based diet for the long-term instead. Often shortened to WFPB, a whole food, plant-based diet emphasizes unprocessed grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and seeds. It excludes all animal products and restricts processed oils, refined sugars, white foods (like bread, rice, and pasta), fried food, and many pre-made foods.

Lets go over the health risks of the keto diet and why you might want to consider whole, plant-based foods instead.

The keto diet often encourages foods such as processed meats, fatty meats, and butter. Keto is a risk to heart health when it is extremely high in animal proteins and animal fats, says Hunnes, adding that the diet can increase inflammation in the body. Though its exact role in heart health is unknown, inflammation is common in heart disease and stroke patients. However, this inflammation is often hidden by the fact that it is a low-calorie diet, and a low-enough calorie diet can decrease the risk of increased and high cholesterol levels, adds Hunnes.

Many keto foods also happen to be high in saturated fat, which is known to increase low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood. A meta-analysis of more than 100 studies on the keto diet published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition found that it raises both the risk of heart disease and LDL cholesterol buildup if used as a long-term eating plan.

However, studies have linked diets rich in whole, plant-based foods such as whole grains, legumes, fruits, non-starchy vegetables, nuts, and healthy oils rich in unsaturated fats with lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and reduced inflammation.

Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are all rich in dietary fiber, a nutrient that helps increase feelings of fullness and aids in digestive health. But, a keto diet is very low in fiber from fruits, vegetables, and grains. It is especially low in beta-glucan, a type of fiber found in grains such as barley and oats. Studies suggest that beta-glucan also helps to maintain healthy cholesterol and blood glucose levels.

In addition to that, beta-glucan and other cereal fibers help you maintain a healthy gut microbiome, Julie Miller Jones, PhD, LN, CNS, and a scientific advisor for the Joint Institute of Food Safety and Nutrition for the University of Maryland and the US Food and Drug Administration, tells VegNews.

Thus, followers of the [keto] diet may not only suffer from constipation and slow transit times, but may also lack the protection provided by the fermentation of fibers in the large bowel, explains Jones. This fermentation of these carbohydrates feeds a healthy microbiome, which in turn produces short-chain fatty acids that lower colonic pH, and are associated with lower growth of polyps and colon cancer.

However, a whole food, plant-based diet emphasizes an array of high-fiber foods that aid in a healthy gut microbiome and good digestion, reports a study published in Frontiers in Nutrition in 2019.

You may be missing out on key vitamins and minerals on a long-term keto diet because it restricts so many types of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes. You can have greens from the cabbage family, but most other vegetablesincluding potatoesare out. Avocados and lemons are the only exception for permitted fruits. So, over time, a keto-follower may become deficient in some nutrients.

A study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that those who adhere to fad dietsin this case, two of ketos low-carbohydrate siblings, the Atkins Diet, the South Beach Diet, and the carb-heavy DASH diethave a high likelihood of becoming micronutrient-deficient.

A whole food plant-based diet, on the other hand, encourages obtaining as many nutrients as possible from food, so it encourages eating a wide range of ingredients. But, thats not to say that its perfect. Anyone following any type of vegan diet should supplement vitamin B-12, an essential nutrient that cannot be obtained from plant-based foods.

Its common for keto diet followers to experience rapid weight loss. But, thats not a reason for celebration. Like many other fad diets, keto isnt meant to permanently change the way you eat. Its temporary, and followers often regain the weight they lost after going back to their regular eating habits.

Along with its health risks, the inability to stick to the diet is one of the major reasons why keto has been ranked at the bottom of US News and World Report diet rankings, says Jones. Its also why prestigious organizations such as the Mayo Clinic recommend it for intractable epilepsy but almost nothing else. So while keto promotes rapid weight loss, it does not create dietary patterns that are sustainable and therefore does not lead to sustained weight loss for the vast majority of people.

But, on top of its other benefits, a study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine suggests that a whole food, plant-based diet could aid in safe, sustainable weight loss.

The keto diet comes with a host of other health risks and the one that most people experience first is something called the keto flu. Symptoms include a cloudy mind, dizziness, nausea, cramps, headache, irritability, and constipation.This condition, which is not medically recognized, is known to emerge two to seven days after starting a keto diet. The cause is not known, nor is it unique to the keto diet, and many people who have drastically switched up their diet have reported similar symptoms. Additional negative side effects of a long-term keto diet suggested by studies include a higher risk of kidney stones, osteoporosis, and higher heart rates for athletes.

While there is no evidence that directly ties the keto diet to eating disorders, many dietitians warn that restrictive fad diets, in general, can feed yo-yo dieting and disordered eating.

In addition to that, because the keto diet is so heavy on animal products, its not good for the planet, either. Industrial animal agriculture is the culprit behind 14.5 percent of human-caused global greenhouse gas emissions, while a plant-forward diet puts significantly less strain on the planet. So if youre looking to eat more healthfully and sustainably, a whole food, plant-based diet could be worth a shot. As always, any major changes to your diet should be discussed with your doctor first.

Walking For Weight Loss: How To Burn Calories And Lose Weight – Women’s Health

Looking for a simple, yet effective workout to help you achieve your weight loss goals? Take a walk (seriously).

Walking is a great exercise because almost anyone can do it, at any time, without any equipment, says Grayson Wickham, DPT, CSCS, founder of Movement Vault. It's also low-intensity and easy on your joints, Wickham says, which is helpful if you want to take it easy and avoid injury during your workout.

Whether you prefer going for a stroll in nature or cueing up a podcast and doing laps at the gym, there are many ways to reap the benefits of walking. Heres what you need to know about walking for weight loss and helpful tips for getting your steps in, according to experts.

Meet the experts: Grayson Wickham, PT, DPT, CSCS, is the founder of Movement Vault. Susane Pata, CPT, is a certified group fitness instructor and content strategist for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). Alissa Palladino, RDN, CPT, is a registered dietitian and personal trainer based in Atlanta, Georgia.

The short answer? It depends. An individual can typically burn up to 5,600 calories a month from walking alone, which is roughly 1.6 pounds, according to Susane Pata, CPT, a certified group fitness instructor and content strategist for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). However, the exact number is dependent on a persons individual calculations that take weight, level of conditioning, and training capacity into consideration.

It also depends on whether or not you're in a calorie deficit, in which you burn more calories than you consume, Wickham says. Any type of movement you engage in throughout the day can help you increase your overall calorie expenditure, he saysbut since walking doesn't burn quite as many calories as, say, running or sprinting, you'll probably see more weight loss progress if you combine your walking routine with other high-intensity workouts.

"For example, if you only have 30 minutes to exercise and your goal is to burn the most calories during your 30 minutes, walking isnt the best choice to accomplish this goal," Wickham says. "You will burn far more calories if you increased the intensity of your exercise with things like jogging, lifting weights, sprinting, a HIIT workout, or some combination of these."

Although you may have heard that 10,000 steps a day is the "gold standard" for walking, that number is somewhat arbitrary and may not be appropriate for everyone, says Alissa Palladino, RDN, CPT, an Atlanta-based dietitian and certified personal trainer. Walking goals need to be tailored to an individuals current fitness level, health status, and lifestyle, she says. You may want to set a lower or a higher goal for yourself depending on a variety of factors.

Although it's hard to calculate the exact number of steps you need to lose weight, generally speaking, walking for 30 minutes per day should add up to roughly 100 to 200 calories burned, says Pata. "Doing 30 minutes worth of walking for seven days can create a weekly caloric expenditure of 700 to 1,400 calories. These numbers can add up in the long run and result in weight loss for someone who is overweight and was previously sedentary," she says.

To figure out how much walking you need to do to lose weight, it can help to identify your resting metabolic rate (RMR), which helps you calculate how many calories you need to burn for a calorie deficit. You can speak with a certified trainer or use an online calculator like this one from NASM.

"Stretching and activating specific muscles before your walk will help you decrease your chance of pain and injury during and after your walk," says Wickham. "If you have pain during your walk, this is your body telling you that you really need to start dedicating time to your joint mobility. Everyone should be able to perform a basic life task such as walking without pain."

Doing lunges before a walk can also help, he says. "Performing a set of 10 walking lunges every so often can help you build stronger legs, and gain muscle mass," says Wickham. "Gaining lean muscle mass will increase your resting metabolic expenditure, which means you will be burning more calories at rest. This all leads to increased weight loss."

If you're looking for more intensity, a weighted vest or backpack will increase the demand on your body during your walks, says Wickham. "Typically, anything that makes an exercise more challenging will lead to an increase in calories burned," he adds.

Driven by numbers? Try tracking your steps with a mobile app or smartwatch. This can help you view your progress and stay focused on your movement goals. "Data tracking can help motivate individuals [toward] goals, accomplishments, and help make up for any deficits throughout the week," says Pata.

You don't necessarily have to run to lose weight, but to amp up your walking workouts, try jogging or running slowly for as little as 10 seconds and then walk for two minutes (and repeat). "Adding in short jogs or runs during your walk will help you increase the intensity of your workout, which can help you accelerate your weight loss," Wickham says.

To get creative (and work your leg muscles), you can also practice walking backward, says Wickham. "Walking backward works your quadricep muscles more than walking forward, which can help you maintain healthy and strong knees." Just make sure you're in a safe environment for this (and be aware of other pedestrians).

Sometimes, all it takes is the right song to pump you up. Playing uplifting tunes while you're out and about can make your walking experience more enjoyable. To fully immerse yourself, Pata suggests creating a workout playlist of your favorite songs that lasts the length of the walk. It'll fly by before you know it!

Drinking water is an important part of weight loss, so don't forget to bring your favorite bottle along. "Staying properly hydrated is key for optimal health," says Wickham. "The healthier and more hydrated you are, the better your weight loss journey will be." Not to mention, the H2O will keep your energy up and help you log more miles.

If you're already taking stock of what you eat with a food diary app, it may be helpful to jot down how many calories you're burning by walking. This helps keep you aware of your actions and how it measures up against your weight loss goals, says Pata. That said, counting calories isn't the healthiest option for everyone, so be mindful of choosing a method that works best for you.

To reap the full benefits of walking for weight loss, you have to commit to walking at a regular schedule, whether that's once a day or a week. "Health is a lifestyle, not a quick fix," says Wickham. "Find ways that you can add in your walks that will help stay consistent. The more often you walk, the more weight loss you will have." Pro tip: Take the stairs instead of the elevator, get off the bus or train a few stops early and walk home, or invest in an at-home treadmill to get your steps in.

Next, treat yourself to some nice sneakers that you only use for walking, Pata says. "This creates a 'get-in-the-zone' attitude when you put them on and [encourages] an enjoyable walking experience." From walking shoes for flat feet to podiatrist-recommended options, there are plenty of pairs to choose from.

Penciling in your workouts will make it that much more likely that you'll follow through with your goals. "You know what they say...schedule it or you wont do it. Choosing one time every day to perform your walks will help you stay consistent," says Wickham. "Prioritize your walks and plan around them to ensure you get them in every day."

"You can use Google Maps to plan out your walking route so that you know exactly where you will be walking and the distance you will be walking," Wickham adds. Just be aware of your surroundings, practice safety, and share your location with someone you trust just in caseespecially if you're walking solo.

As a general tip, have the right apparel on hand for rain, cold, or hot weather, says Pata. This will help you stay prepared and less likely to miss a walk session due to less-than-ideal conditions.

To make sure you still exercise on bad weather days, have a rainy-day back-up plan, like keeping a bag packed for the gym or going to the nearest mall to do some laps, Pata recommends. Youll be less likely to forget working out altogether if you have a plan B in place.

Asking someone to keep you company while you get some steps in is a great way to maintain relationshipsand it will help keep you consistent with your walks, says Wickham. You can even suggest coffee and a walk, Pata says, which is a great way to be social and get movement in at the same time.

If you can't be in-person, schedule a catch-up call with someone while you walk. Besides rekindling or maintaining relationships, [a phone call] will make time go by more quickly and the walks may begin to become enjoyable over time, says Pata.

Oatzempic is the latest nutrition trend to hit TikTok. The clever name pays ode to the popular weight loss drug Ozempic, since many say consuming the oat-based drink leads to dramatic weight loss. Some even claim that oatzempic, which has no affiliation with the weight loss medication, can help you lose up to 40 pounds in 2 months.

Although the name is clever, its important to remember not to believe everything you see on social media. Heres what you need to know about the oatzempic trend and whether or not you should try it.

Oatzempic is a simple blended drink with cup of rolled oats, 1 cup of water, a dash of cinnamon and a squeeze of lime juice. The name combines oats and Ozempic, a diabetes medication that regulates blood sugar and curbs appetite, resulting in weight loss.

Props to whoever came up with the catchy name, but oatzempic doesnt include any weight loss medication. Its merely an oat-based smoothie.

People on TikTok are drinking #oatzempic to lose weight for their wedding or achieve their summer bod. Some who drink it daily claim that it keeps them full, which isnt surprising given the fiber content of oats. Research suggests that the beta-glucan fiber in oats positively impacts hormones that regulate hunger and appetite. The review also suggests a link between eating oats and long-term weight management and lower incidences of obesity.

Oatzempic has about 140 calories, less than most people consume in a single snack. As a result, drinking oatzempic as a meal replacement results in a calorie deficit and may cause weight loss. Yet, drastically cutting calories often causes extreme hunger and overeating, which may hinder weight loss efforts.

Losing 40 pounds in two months sounds appealing, but its extreme and not recommended. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that people who lose weight graduallyabout 1 to 2 pounds per week are more likely to maintain weight loss. Although weight loss differs for everyone, losing about 5 pounds per month is a healthy goal.

As appealing as quick weight loss sounds, no miracle drink or food can help you magically shed pounds. Losing weight comes down to small diet and exercise changes over time.

A study of over 4,000 people who lost weight as part of a structured weight loss program shared how they kept the weight off for more than three years. They cited tactics such as eating nutrient-dense foods, monitoring food intake, engaging in physical activity, goal setting and celebrating small achievements.

As a dietitian, I recommend oats (and even named them my favorite whole grain). They are a healthy and affordable breakfast staple that provides fiber and protein. And eating oats has been linked to lower levels of cholesterol. But, theres no proof that oatzempic leads to dramatic weight loss. Rather than blending oats with water and lime juice, make a hearty bowl of oatmeal and enjoy chewing your food instead.

Enter Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, who has made it his mission to debunk medical misinformation and educate people. Better known as Dr. Mike, he is a practicing family medicine physician in Chatham, New Jersey, who shares his expertise with millions of YouTube and social media followers. These so-called snake oil sellers and their dubious miracle cures are not new, he said; he calls them I Know All experts, a term he coined in a 2017 TED Talk.

I think its not a new phenomenon. Ponce de Lenwas searching for the fountain of youth many years ago, and yet were still doing that to this day, Dr. Mike recently told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta on the podcast Chasing Life. I just think that the strategies have changed because we have this new added tool of social media that traditionally doctors, who are evidence-based, have shied away from.

Dr. Mike said the I Know All experts and their too-good-to-be-true products flourish in the gray zone where science does not yet have clear answers and social media and the internet amplify their voices.

It allowed a prime opportunity for these IKA experts to come in and claim that they have all the answers. And thats really just a form of trust hacking through mass confidence, as if they know whats going on with you, he said.

(Thats) in dark contrast to what a physician is trained to do: We come in and we dont claim to know the exact diagnosis. We create one diagnosis along with a differential of other options. It could be, when we recommend the treatment, we hedge and say it works X percentage of the time. But these IKA experts trust-hack and say, I know whats wrong with you. I know this is going to work for you. Take my miracle potion. And that sells very, very well.

With so much misinformation floating around the internet and social media especially around the topic of weight loss what can you do to make sure youre not going down an ill-advised rabbit hole? Dr. Mike has these five tips.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Dont trust 99% of things you see on social media; be a healthy skeptic. Thats how l like to say it, said Dr. Mike, noting that there are many sources of information both governmental, such as the US Centers for Disease Control and Preventions FoodSafety.gov, and academic, such as the site run by Harvard Medical School that are trustworthy. (Those websites usually end in .gov, .edu and .org.)

There was a funny commercial I forgot what it was for; I believe insurance and there was a woman going on a date with a gentleman, and he completely lied on his profile. And he was, like, Always trust what you see on the internet. And thats a lot (of) how I feel about supplements online and people talking about supplements online: That if it feels too good to be true, allow that inner skeptic in you to further test it, either by doing some more in-depth research on your own if youre comfortable, or bringing it up at your next visit with your primary care doctor.

Speaking of primary care physicians, prioritize building a relationship with a good medical professional.

Thats the biggest tip I would give: to create a long-lasting relationship with a primary care doctor, said Dr. Mike, adding that he sees people in their 20s and 30s using urgent care as their primary care source.

Thats not what urgent care is meant to be, he said. Its not going to give you good outcomes. Youre not going to form a good relationship. Youre not going to get the benefits of having a longitudinal relationship with a single provider. So, those are important.

Dr. Mike said such a relationship is especially important when it comes to weight loss, because how in the world can you help someone sustain weight loss if theres no continuity of care? Its, by definition, mandatory for it.

When it comes to weight and weight loss, there are many important factors involved, so dont fall into the trap of obsessing over one, whether that be the one right diet, the one perfect food or the one must-take supplement.

Zoom out of just thinking about, What I can take or what I can eat? and understand that theres a lot of other things that impact your weight, Dr. Mike said.

So, getting seven to nine hours of sleep as an adult, during the same hours of the night, consistently is going to be important for good weight control. Getting 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity is going to be important.

Dr. Mike also suggests making small adjustments to your daily habits: Skip the elevator and use the stairs instead, and for short distances, leave the car in the garage and do errands on foot. These things are going to add up and actually lead you to have better control of your weight, he said.

When it comes to weight, dont underestimate the role of your mental health.

(Make) sure that you get help when it comes to mental health issues and concerns, Dr. Mike said. Because if youre not in a good mental health place, its very easy to have food become almost a self-treatment for either unhappiness or anxiety. And those conditions both depression and generalized anxiety disorder are treatable conditions, by either getting therapy, perhaps some medication if thats warranted in your condition.

And you might not even connect weight and mental health but it plays an incredibly potent role in helping you not just get to a healthy weight but stay and maintain a healthy weight.

Understand some basic principles about the food you consume, so you dont, for example, vilify or lionize a single food or ingredient.

For example, Dr. Mike said he recently had a guest on his podcast who tried to equate a chocolate kiss to a grape.

We have to put that in perspective. While you may compare them based on their sugar content, thats one way to categorize them, Dr. Mike said. But then if you compare them to how many nutrients that are valuable to us like vitamins, fiber, etc. in grapes versus chocolate, the grapes are clearly healthier.

So avoid trying to oversimplify nutrition with these hard-and-fast rules, and instead just try and give yourself a general understanding of how foods work. Because when youre not as strict and youre not as hard-and-fast in your thinking about food, you actually create a healthier, long-lasting relationship with food that will give you better outcomes in maintaining a healthy weight.

"Oatzempic" craze: Should you try the oat drink for weight loss? Experts weigh in. – CBS News

Another weight loss trend is making its rounds on social media this time in the form of a drink called "oatzempic." The name combines a reference to oats, one of the drink's ingredients, with a play onOzempic, the diabetes drug that's become popular for weight loss even though there's no prescription medication involved.

Some TikTok users claim the drink made with oats, water and lime juice can help someone lose up to 40 pounds in as little as 2 months. Experts, however, say to be wary of any trend that promises to purge pounds fast.

Lisa Valente, a registered dietitian and nutrition editor at Healthline, calls the trend "clever marketing for something that has no merit behind it."

"Blended oat drinks are not the same as prescription drugs. It also seems like a dangerous trend that promotes disordered eating and isn't nutritionally sound or based in science," she told CBS News.

Maggie Evans, a registered dietitian and care specialist with virtual cardiometabolic care platform 9amHealth, calls the trend an "extreme measure."

"As we've seen before, whether it'sMaster Cleanse, water fasts or other extreme diets, these (trends) may result in short-term weight loss results, but aren't the healthiest or most sustainable way to achieve that weight loss," she says.

TikTok has not blocked the term and hashtag (a step it appears to have taken for some other body image-related trends like "legging legs"), but when you search for "oatzempic" on the app, a banner appears saying "you are more than your weight," with links to resources.

"Fast weight loss can be possible when you restrict calories significantly, and this drink is quite low in calories, so if you are using it as a meal replacement, it may lead to fast weight loss," Valente explains. "However, I wouldn't recommend it because it is not a safe way to lose weight."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people who take the approach ofgradual, steady weight loss are more likely to keep the weight off than people who lose weight quickly.

"If a person stops the oatzempic diet, they're likely to regain the weight they lost and may end up in a yo-yo dieting cycle," says Dr. Avantika Waring, an endocrinologist and chief medical officer of 9amHealth. "We know that medically, losing and regaining weight repeatedly can actually make sustaining a healthy weight harder."

Waring says rapid weight loss can also result in:

"Underfueling the body can also lead to constipation, dehydration, dizziness and menstrual irregularities," she says.

Yes, oats are a heart-healthy whole grain that can be part of a balanced diet, experts say, and their high fiber content can also help us feel satisfied and fuller longer. But they're no "magic solution" for weight loss.

"We don't have any data to suggest it is effective for weight loss, and it's likely that having a blended oat drink for breakfast would be as healthy as eating a bowl of oatmeal without added sugars or topped with just fresh fruit which might also taste better!" Waring says.

Plus, experts note the oatzempic drink is missing key nutrients like protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals.

"There are other safer, healthier ways to lose weight that involve making small changes to your diet and don't remove entire foods or food groups," Valente says.

In general, false or misleading information can be rampant on social media. Experts say they've seen increased misinformation regarding weight loss in the past year, specifically related to the interest in drugs like Ozempic.

"Everything from 'nature's Ozempic' aka berberine, an ineffective and potentially dangerous supplement to overblown, fear-inducing side effects like 'Ozempic face' and 'Ozempic butt,'" Dr. James Wantuck, co-founder and chief medical officer of PlushCare,previously told CBS News.

Nutrition is also a nuanced topic, Valente adds, making it difficult to explain in a short, 10-second clip online.

"If you have questions about what you eat, I always recommend speaking with a health care professional rather than consulting social media," she says.

The 90 Day Fianc: The Single Life season 4 Tell All episodes have highlighted Natalie Mortdovtseva's jaw-dropping weight loss, but she's not the only franchise star who has lost weight. The series chronicles the lives of 90 Day Fianc franchise stars whose relationships didn't work out. Since the series 90 Day Fianc first premiered in 2014, many of the franchise's cast members have lost weight during the process. Among them is the aforementioned Natalie, but she's not the only one who has lost weight over the years. Ashley Michelle, who is currently appearing on 90 Day Fianc: Happily Ever After? season 8, has also lost a considerable amount of weight. As has Natalie's 90 Day: The Single Life costar Tyray Mollett. Scroll down for information about 10 of the most dramatic 90 Day Fianc weight-loss journeys.

Ashley is a professional witch from New York, who married Manuel, a former construction worker from Ecuador, on 90 Day Fianc season 10. Though the couple had dated for seven years, Ashley and Manuel fought a lot, especially about money and how Ashley spent it. For his part, Manuel expected Ashley to help support his family back in Ecuador, including his two teenage sons, who she has never met. Manuel has also been suspicious about Ashley's witchcraft.

Ashleys romantic journey may be a constant struggle, but her lifestyle and fitness journey get better with every passing month. In March 2024, Ashley took to her Instagram and shared a deck of weight-loss comparison photos from throughout her journey. Some of the photos are of her earliest days at the gym. While others are of a dramatically slimmed down Ashley.

Ashley has lost about 100 pounds and the difference is dramatic.

Natalie Mordovtseva showed off her weight loss during part 2 of the 90 Day: The Single Life Tell All special. Natalie first appeared in 90 Day Fianc season 7, when she moved from Kyiv, Ukraine to Sequim, Washington, to marry Mike Youngquist, and it was a very rocky relationship. Despite the conflict between them, Natalie and Mike were able to get married before Natalie's 90-day K-1 fianc visa expired. During this dark time in her life, Natalie put on 20 pounds while she was still with Mike. Once their relationship ended and Natalie moved to Florida, then to Los Angeles, she started working on herself and lost 35 pounds.

30-year-old Tiffany Franco was first featured on 90 Day Fianc: The Other Way season 1, when she moved to South Africa with her young son, to marry Ronald Smith. They got pregnant almost right away, but Tiffany struggled to deal with Ronald's gambling addiction and criminal past. She also felt that she and her sons weren't safe in South Africa. Ultimately, she regretted her decision when Ronald couldn't support his family financially.

The Maryland native called Ronald an irresponsible father and husband and claimed that she had been taking care of her two kids all by herself.

After the divorce, Ronald moved on with someone new, while Tiffany decided to focus on her health and fitness instead. In June 2021, she underwent gastric bypass surgery to lose weight. When all was said and done, the 90 Day Fianc franchise star dropped 80 pounds. Tiffany showed off her newly transformed figure in a lacy black number.

90 Day Fianc: Happily Ever After? season 8 star Liz Woods worked as a waitress in San Diego when one of her customers, 90 Day Fianc star Big Ed Brown, asked her out on a date. Liz became Big Eds new girlfriend, and her whole life changed. During her relationship with Ed, Liz gained some weight. Ed would body-shame her, by looking at old pictures and asking if she'd ever be that thin again. In 2022, Liz went on a strict diet and exercise regimen and lost 22 pounds.

Tyray Mollett, star of 90 Day: The Single Life season 8, looks very different in his new photos after losing some weight. 33-year-old Tyray first appeared on 90 Day Fianc: Before the 90 Days season 6. Tray had met his girlfriend of four years, Carmella, on a dating app, and was hoping to get engaged. Though Carmella refused to get on video calls with him, Tyray didn't see the red flags.

Ultimately, it was revealed that Tyray had been catfished by a man named Christian from Barbados.

Since his appearance on the franchise, Tyray has focused on his health and on losing weight. Though it's unknown how much weight he lost, Tyray's Instagram posts reveal a much slimmer-looking man.

Fans were shocked by 90 Day Fianc season 10 star Devin Hoofman's dramatic weight-loss transformation after filming the season. Devin is a 23-year-old Arkansas native who married Korean man Seungdo Ham, AKA Nick, after meeting him on the dating app Tinder. Nick got in trouble after revealing his nickname for Devin was Piggy, because he thought Devin was a little chubby. He meant it as a term of endearment, but it bothered Devin and her parents. By the time the season finale rolled around, Devin had lost 30 pounds and looked like a different person.

90 Day Fianc: Love In Paradise star Aryanna Sierra has lost 100 pounds since starting her weight-loss journey, and her transformation has been extraordinary and inspiring. Aryanna talked about wanting to get healthier so that she could take care of her young son. Following her split from her ex-husband, Sherlon, the reality star focused on fitness and nutrition, inspiring others with her journey.

In January 2023, Aryanna posted an Instagram before and after weight-loss comparison, with a caption that reads, " Who knew you could look, but more importantly FEEL better at 27 than you did at 22. "

Fan favorite 90 Day Fianc franchise star Ariela Weinberg has lost 50 pounds since having her baby. The 33-year-old reality star first appeared in 90 Day Fianc: The Other Way, where she was pregnant with Biniyam Shibre's baby. At the time, Ariela was living in Ethiopia and struggling to adapt to her new life. During 90 Day Fianc: The Other Way season 3, Ariela had to bring her son, Aviel, back to the United States for hernia surgery, which was a difficult time for her marriage. They were able to make it work and, eventually, Biniyam moved to the United States and appeared on 90 Day Fianc season 9.

90 Day Fianc season 8 star Rebecca Parrott has slimmed down since her start in the franchise, as evidenced by her Instagram photos revealing her slimmed down figure. She has been open about her weight loss and cosmetic procedures, which Rebecca frequently posts about on Instagram with captions.

"Every day I feel better about my body."

Though she's a grandmother, Rebecca has always liked younger men. Her Moroccan ex was in his late teens when he dated Rebecca, who was then well into her 40s at the time. Rebecca then married Zied Hakimi, despite the Tunisian man being almost half her age.

38-year-old 90 Day: The Single Life season 4 star Veronica Rodriguez has lost a lot of weight over the course of the past few years. The reality TV star first debuted in 90 Day Fianc: Before the 90 Days. Veronica then appeared on 90 Days: TheSingle Life season 4, where she chronicled her relationship with Jamal Menzies. Veronica revealed that she had lost a total of 25 pounds, and it's clear that the successful lifestyle influencer looks much slimmer than she used to.
